The Battle for King's Landing-An Army at the Gates
On the Blackwater, the green flames still roared and rolled, like a giant python that had coiled around its prey.
The problem is that the prey is just too big; it can't be swallowed in a short time.
The warships that had gathered and become congested due to the blocking iron chains actually formed a floating bridge on the water!
Stannis led his elite troops and landed using the pontoon bridge made of warship wreckage.
This is probably the most expensive pontoon bridge in the world.
Stannis pursed his lips tightly and turned to look at his warships.
His gaze quickly settled on a warship with a yellow hull.
At this moment, it resembled a giant brazier, with soldiers perishing in the flames and masts breaking as they were devoured by the fire.
Fury!
He once sailed on this warship and defeated the remnants of the Targaryen.
He once sailed on this warship to help Robert quell the Balon rebellion.
He had intended to use the same warship to conquer King's Landing and reclaim what was rightfully his.
That was his most beloved warship, a witness to his glory. In some ways, Stannis loved the Fury more than his wife, Selyse.
Watching so many warships perish in flames, he felt as if someone was stabbing his heart with a knife.
He remembered that his most trusted lieutenant Davos, had placed his son on the Fury as the rower-master.
The child looked like he had just turned 18.
Stannis then thought of Davos, his Onion Knight.
But the roaring flames and billowing smoke obscured his vision, and he couldn't find the Black Pearl Davos was aboard.
The cost of this battle exceeded his expectations, and worse, victory was yet to come.
Stannis, as if making a decision, turned his head and looked at the Crowned Stag banner still fluttering atop the Mud Gate.
"A bastard, a Lannister bastard, what right does he have to fly the Baratheon banner?!" Stannis's blue eyes seemed to be churning with turbulent waves. He had already paid too high a price; today, he had to take King's Landing's Landing!
He looked at the sword at his waist, the sacred sword Lightbringer, which the Red Priestess had sacrificed to the statues of the Seven for him!
Stannis drew his sword from his waist, its brilliant blade radiating yellow and red light.
He held it in his hand as if it were a torch.
It's a pity that this torch didn't generate any heat.
He threw off his helmet and took his stag crown from his attendant, putting it on his head.
He then disregarded the objections of others and went to the most conspicuous high place.
Stannis raised the Lightbringer sword high, trying to attract everyone's attention.
The closest people to Stannis were some well-armored guards.
Further away were some disheveled soldiers, their faces blackened by smoke and their cloaks burned and tattered.
Some of them had disheveled hair, like the Wildlings they had encountered in the Kingswood.
Rather than saying they successfully landed, it would be more accurate to say they escaped to shore.
Stannis knew he had to rally the morale of his soldiers.
"Soldiers! The Usurper's defenses are crumbling, our ships have been burned, and now there is only one way out: to breach King's Landing! Follow your king! Kill one!"
Having said that, Stannis, wielding the radiant Lightbringer, charged toward the Mud Gate.
When the soldiers saw their king leading the charge, their nearly extinguished morale was rekindled.
Some people even dragged engineering equipment out of the ship's hold.
Siege ladder, battering ram, catapult.
Their attack was not only aimed at breaking through the enemy's defenses, but also fueled by the rage of those who had fallen into a trap and wanted revenge.
Meanwhile, Joffrey on the city wall sensed that something was amiss.
"Shouldn't they have all been burned to death? How did they manage to climb back up?"
Joffrey no longer eagerly watched the carnage of Stannis's army from the city walls, but instead cautiously retreated to the relatively safe position Tyrion had arranged for him.
The Wildfire explosion that just happened, which seemed like divine punishment, was truly awe-inspiring.
Yet some enemies survived the attack and climbed ashore to seek revenge.
This gave the soldiers on the city's defenses a unique psychological shock.
Moreover, Stannis's soldiers below were frequently chanting "Long live His Majesty Stannis!" The fact that the enemy leader was leading the charge further boosted the morale of their soldiers.
Stannis's soldiers soon arrived at the city walls, though they were quickly driven back, but encouraged by this, more and more soldiers continued to climb up.
Some of the soldiers guarding the city would occasionally glance at Joffrey's position to see if their king was still there.
But Joffrey looked left and right and felt that his location was far too conspicuous.
Especially those soldiers who always looked towards their own positions.
He's there!
Suddenly, Joffrey heard a loud roar.
However, it was not possible to identify who was shouting.
'Did Stannis's soldiers see me? I can't stay here any longer, I can't stay in this godforsaken place any longer, I have to go back to the Red Keep!' Joffrey felt his legs trembling.
He looked at Tyrion, Tyrion was now giving his all to command the army.
"Hmm, he shouldn't be able to see me, he can't see me!" Joffrey slowly lifted his buttocks first, then took a few steps without making a sound.
He looked at the guard beside him, but couldn't remember his name.
But it doesn't matter anymore.
"I am the King," Joffrey encouraged himself, turning to command, "Sir, escort me back to the Red Keep."
After saying that, Joffrey strode off, fearing that his Kingsguard would object to him.
But with his departure, Tyrion faced increased pressure. The soldiers discovered that their king had abandoned them and fled for his life, causing their morale to plummet.
Some people followed suit and left the city walls, leaving Tyrion to watch helplessly as the Mud Gate defenses crumbled.
The battle cries of Stannis's soldiers were right beside him.
The battering rams below pounded the city gate with a frenzied roar, each impact like a muffled rumble of thunder from the ground.
"Tyrion!" Tyrion turned around and saw Bronn.
What brings you here?
"I came in through the other door," Bronn shouted. "Can we hold out?"
"We have to hold on, even if we can't!" Tyrion roared, his face contorted with rage, displaying the spirit of a true lion.
He had no desire to say anything more to Bronn, and led him and his guards to a group of soldiers who were about to flee the defensive line.
"Soldiers, our reinforcements are almost here. Hold on a little longer. Do you really think your courage is less than that of a dwarf like me?"
Tyrion knew that simply using reverse psychology wouldn't work at this point.
He drew his short sword and roared with all his might, "Now, go back and hold them off! If you can push Stannis back, each of you will get a hundred Gold Dragon! Anyone who tries to escape, I'll kill him right now!"
Under Tyrion's coercion and enticement, these demoralized soldiers returned to their battlefield.
To stabilize the crumbling defenses.
While the two sides were locked in fierce battle, they were completely unaware that another army was attacking and seizing territory.
Jon led over ten thousand troops from the Riverlands of the North and began his attack from the Old Gate.
After capturing the Old Gate, the troops split into two groups along the city wall and successively took the Gate of the Gods, the Dragon Gate, the Iron Gate, and the Lion Gate.
Jon was incredibly fast; he conquered the city before the enemy messengers could even report the battle to the neighboring gates or Tyrion.
The main reason is that Tyrion placed all his elite troops at River Gate.
By this time, Jon and Martin had arrived at King's Gate with over a hundred heavily armored elite troops and nearly a thousand soldiers.
The King's Gate is about to be breached.
only--
Jon, who had been observing Gods' Eye, realized that something was amiss.
At this point, the range he could detect had exceeded thirty kilometers.
Thirty kilometers away, he sensed a rapidly approaching, high-spirited fresh force.
As for the number of people, from his perspective, he could detect around four thousand.
However, outside their field of vision, even more enemy troops were pouring in.
It's like playing a hack-and-slash game; the number of monsters entering the map may not seem like much at first glance, but they keep coming in endlessly.
"The army of Highgarden has arrived! The city's garrison at its peak numbered only around ten thousand. Stannis's soldiers perished in the Wildfire explosion, leaving perhaps only three or four thousand remaining."
Jon still had about 10,000 men under his command, while as far as he knew, the Reach army numbered a full 80,000!
Eighty thousand!
This is a terrifying number.
King's Landing has a population of only about 500,000.
When this massive army rolls over, everything will turn to ashes.
Judging from the enemy's speed of advance, he has no more than an hour left!
Within an hour, he will not only take the King's Gate, but also the River Gate!
And there's another rather troublesome place Red Keep.
The walls of the Red Keep are much taller and thicker; they cannot be breached in a short time.
Jon was puzzled. He clearly remembered that Stannis's army of Tyrell and Lannister arrived just as Stannis was about to storm King's Landing, which seemed to be earlier than before.
But Jon had no time to think. He turned and shouted at Martin was still leading the charge:
"Martin! Martin!"
"Lord Jon."
Upon hearing Jon's summons, Martin rushed over. "Clear a path for me, at any cost! I'm taking River Gate!"
Jon decided to abandon his previous strategy of completely capturing a city gate before advancing, and instead chose to open a breach first, so that he could launch an attack on River Gate more quickly.
He estimated that Stannis would soon receive news of Tyrell's army's arrival.
Stannis was also a seasoned general; he wouldn't linger in battle and would retreat as before.
At this moment, the defenders on the city wall of River Gate are relaxed, and I may be able to defeat them with one strike.
Just as Jon had predicted.
Stannis had almost reached the city gates, was struck dumb by the news of the arrival of reinforcements from the Reach.
He pursed his lips and ground his teeth, feeling even more dizzy.
"Your Majesty, let's retreat! If we don't leave, we're all doomed!" It was only a knight who advised him.
The knight had platinum blonde hair.
Before deciding whether to retreat, Stannis, from the House Massey, recalled the knight's origins.
However, he quickly brought himself back to reality.
After he ordered the Red Priestess to kill Renly, the Reach did not choose to join his army, but instead launched the Bitterbridge Mutiny, killing the men he had sent.
His original plan was to seize King's Landing before the Reach army could react.
This can also secure the victory in advance.
But now it seems he has no time left.
