Background / History
Stannis grew up at Storm’s End and endured its siege during Robert’s Rebellion, surviving on leather straps and dead rats while holding back the royalist force. He believes Robert ignored this sacrifice, later favoring Eddard Stark and granting Storm’s End to Renly instead. Robert’s death and the revelation that Cersei’s children were illegitimate convinced Stannis that the Iron Throne was his by right. 74
He reclaimed Storm’s End after Melisandre used a shadow creature to kill acting castellan Cortnay Penrose. With the Stormlands’ forces and a massive fleet, Stannis then moved against King’s Landing. 74
At the Battle of the Blackwater, wildfire destroyed most of his fleet. Of roughly 20,000 men and over 200 warships, only about 3,000 soldiers and 20 ships escaped. Stannis nevertheless rallied his surviving troops with Lightbringer and personally led their advance before withdrawing when Tyrell reinforcements arrived. 90 91
Following the defeat, his Dragonstone court fractured. He imprisoned Alester Florent for proposing a Lannister marriage alliance, becoming increasingly isolated and reliant on Melisandre’s counsel. 107
Reign over King’s Landing
Jon Snow’s campaign enabled Stannis to take King’s Landing. Upon ascending the Iron Throne, Stannis restored Eddard Stark’s honor, stripped Cersei and her children of royal status, and rewarded allies who had helped secure the capital. 121
He personally knighted and legitimized Jon Snow as Jon Stark, initially granting him Harrenhal before eventually elevating him as Lord of Casterly Rock and Warden of the Westerlands. These rewards reflected Stannis’s recognition of Jon’s military service, though Jon’s growing influence later became a source of fear. 122 133 195
Stannis held a coronation incorporating the Lord of Light’s rites while preserving a separate ceremony of the Faith of the Seven. Under his rule, the Great Sept became a shared center of worship for the Seven and the Red God. 131 132 217
Appearance
Stannis is a tall man with deep sea-blue eyes and thin lips. His expression is often described as cold, severe, or tightly controlled. 74 121 242
- Deep blue Baratheon eyes. 74
- Tall, stern-bearing figure. 74 242
- Thin lips habitually pressed into a hard line. 74
- Wears a stag crown when leading troops in battle. 90
Personality
Stannis is driven by duty, legal succession, and a fierce belief that the throne belongs to him. He views Robert’s failure to reward him, Renly’s competing claim, and the Lannisters’ false royal line as personal and political injustices. 74
He administers punishments harshly but according to his own strict conception of justice. He cut off Davos Seaworth’s fingers for smuggling before raising him to lordship, severed Petyr Baelish’s left hand for his role in the Bitterbridge Mutiny, and later ordered Petyr’s leg broken for disobedience. 116 219
Stannis is personally brave and willing to expose himself in battle, yet he struggles to inspire or coordinate large, hastily assembled armies. His distrust deepens when Jon’s victories eclipse his own, leading him to see his former ally as a potential usurper. 90 195 271
Despite his severity, he shows rare affection toward Shireen. He brings her to King’s Landing, makes her his cupbearer, and intends for her to learn the duties of a future queen. 242
Abilities & Skills
Military Command
Stannis is an experienced commander with a record of holding Storm’s End during Robert’s Rebellion, commanding the royal fleet against the Iron Islands, and mounting major campaigns for the Iron Throne. 74 195
- Organized the assault on King’s Landing with a fleet of more than 200 warships. 87
- Led the surviving Blackwater troops toward the Mud Gate after the wildfire disaster. 90
- Planned to secure the Twins and the Neck before confronting Jon’s army in the Riverlands. 264
- Attacked Jon Connington’s force at Harrenhal with 30,000 main-force troops, including Vale cavalry and longbowmen. 271
- Struggles with battlefield communication; his voice fails after repeated shouted commands, forcing him to rely on messengers. 271
Personal Combat
Stannis remains an active fighter rather than a purely ceremonial king.
- Sparred simultaneously against two skilled guards in the Red Keep training yard. 217
- Led from exposed positions during the Blackwater assault and the Battle of Harrenhal. 90 271
- Acknowledges that he could not defeat three fully armed knights at once. 217
Political Rule and Punishment
Stannis uses royal decrees, titles, pardons, and punishments to impose his authority.
- Restored Eddard Stark’s honor and formally delegitimized Cersei’s children after taking the throne. 121
- Rewarded Jon, Beric Dondarrion, the Brotherhood Without Banners, and House Darry loyalists for their service. 121 122
- Appointed Yohn Royce Protector of the Vale and sought to bring Robin Arryn under royal custody to extend control over the Vale. 242
- Offers major rewards for service, including the title of Duke of Casterly Rock for Jon Snow’s head. 260
Use of Red Priest Magic
Stannis does not perform magic himself, but he relies on Melisandre and other red priests when conventional means appear insufficient.
- Authorized Melisandre’s shadow creature to remove Cortnay Penrose and open the way to Storm’s End. 74
- Accepted blood magic as a potential counter to Euron Greyjoy’s sorcery. 217
- Used Gendry’s blood in a concealed ritual to summon a tailwind for a cavalry charge at Harrenhal. 271
- Keeps such rites secret because sorcery is considered dishonorable in Westeros. 271
Equipment / Insignia
- Lightbringer — a brilliant yellow-and-red sword obtained through Melisandre’s sacrificial burning of statues of the Seven; it shines like a torch but gives off no heat. 74 90
- Stag crown — worn when Stannis personally leads his troops. 90
- Flaming Stag Banner — his royal banner, bearing a stag and a flaming red heart. 115 155
Relationships
- Robert Baratheon — elder brother and former king. Stannis resents Robert for overlooking his sacrifices and leaving him to inherit the realm’s crises. 74 217
- Renly Baratheon — younger brother and rival claimant. Stannis considered him a usurper and believed he had personally executed him. 74 91
- Selyse Baratheon — wife and queen. Their relationship is cold and deteriorates further after Selyse secretly arranges for Aemon Targaryen to be taken for blood magic; Stannis confines her to Maegor’s Holdfast. 115 219
- Shireen Baratheon — daughter and heir. Stannis attempts to prepare her for queenship, though she remains intimidated by him. 242
- Davos Seaworth — trusted counselor and longtime loyalist. Davos repeatedly defends Jon’s loyalty and urges Stannis toward restraint. 127 195 242
- Melisandre — red priestess and influential adviser. Stannis relies on her shadow magic and religious counsel, though later reflects on her betrayal. 74 217 272
- Jon Snow / Jon Stark — initially a valuable supporter and vassal whom Stannis legitimizes and rewards. Jon’s rapid ascent, conquest of Casterly Rock, and revealed Targaryen parentage turn him into Stannis’s chief rival. 122 195 250
- Petyr Baelish — political operator repeatedly punished by Stannis, first losing his left hand and later a leg. 116 219
- Alester Florent — Hand of the King whose proposed Lannister alliance leads Stannis to imprison him on suspicion of treason. 107
- Thoros of Myr — red priest who assists Stannis’s blood ritual at Harrenhal before defecting to Jon’s side. 271 272
Major Arcs
Claiming Storm’s End and the Iron Throne
Stannis reclaims Storm’s End through Melisandre’s magic, gathers the Stormlands’ strength, and launches his first attempt to take King’s Landing. The campaign ends in catastrophe at the Blackwater, where wildfire annihilates most of his fleet and army. 74 87 90 91
King of the Seven Kingdoms
After Jon’s intervention helps secure King’s Landing, Stannis becomes king and begins reshaping the realm through legal decrees, rewards, religious reforms, and political marriages. 121 122 131 132
Growing Distrust of Jon
Jon’s victories in the Westerlands and Iron Islands leave Stannis increasingly jealous and insecure. He attempts to recall Jon to serve as castellan of Dragonstone, explicitly sending Davos and Melisandre together to make refusal difficult. 195 217 233 242
War against the White Wolf
Learning that Jon is Rhaegar Targaryen’s son shatters Stannis’s assumption that Jon can be restrained through weak legitimacy. Stannis summons forces from the Crownlands, Vale, Stormlands, Dorne, and House Frey, then marches to suppress him. 250 260
At Harrenhal, Stannis relies on superior numbers, Vale cavalry, and blood magic, but fails to break Jon’s defensive force. Jon’s counterattack forces his withdrawal, while surrender letters and Thoros’s defection further undermine his army’s morale. 271 272
