Background / History

When Eddard Stark is condemned for treason, Robb begins raising the North's banners from Winterfell. With Maester Luwin's aid, he assesses the forces House Karstark, House Bolton, Last Hearth, and the mountain clans can provide, while preparing to clear his father's name. He remains certain that Jon Snow will return despite reports of Jon's desertion from the Night's Watch. 4

Jon's return strengthens Robb's resolve to rescue Eddard, Sansa, and Arya. Robb plans to gather the northern host at Winterfell and strike south to relieve Riverrun, but must first manage bannermen who consider him too young to command. He turns to Jon and Theon for help, ultimately allowing Jon to discipline the disruptive lords with twenty-four skilled men. 6 7 8

Robb uses Jon's victory over the Boltons to assert authority over the assembled northern lords.
