Background / History
Guild ties and early conflicts
Laxus is the grandson of Fairy Tail's guild master, Makarov, and a descendant of founder Yuri Dreyar. According to Mirajane, he once had good relationships with the guild's members despite being somewhat unyielding. Rhode suspects that his later rebellion stems from wanting recognition for his own abilities rather than his grandfather's reputation, but this remains Rhode's interpretation 19 238 271.
When Laxus encounters the newly recruited Rhode, he ridicules both Rhode's weak magic and his apologetic attitude. He then questions why Fairy Tail's weaker members deserve to be his comrades, angering Natsu, Gray, and Erza. Makarov defuses the confrontation by sending him on a mission and subsequently apologizes for his grandson's behavior 19.
Duels and the S-Class examination
Before the Harvest Festival, Laxus accepts Natsu's challenge largely out of boredom. He casually catches Natsu's attack, withstands his fire breath, and overwhelms him with lightning-enhanced punches and kicks. Natsu's persistence prompts Laxus to release more power, but Laxus eventually leaves with the Raijinshuu 95 96 97.
Laxus later serves as Kana and Rhode's S-Class examiner. Their task is to retrieve a flag and reach a magic circle behind him. He repeatedly disrupts their coordinated attacks, injures Kana, and shatters Rhode's Azure Carved Golem form with an enlarged lightning fist. Despite Rhode's apparent defeat in direct combat, the pair pass the trial through a tactic involving a Stone Beetle—an outcome Laxus later remembers as “cheating” 169 170 171 439.
Escalating hostility
Laxus increasingly insists that he is Fairy Tail's strongest mage, dismissing Erza, Mirajane, Mystogan, and even Makarov as potential rivals. He also uses the second-floor restriction to taunt Natsu, who cannot follow him upstairs without S-Class status 321.
After Fairy Tail's conflict with Phantom Lord, he declares that he intends to remove weak members and build a stronger guild. During an argument with Erza, he throws a table that Rhode blocks. His aggression later extends to attacking Gajeel and nearly striking Levy; Gajeel protects her, and Makarov reprimands Laxus 366 428.
Fairy Tail's Strongest Battle
During the Harvest Festival, Laxus and the Raijinshuu seize six female guild members whom Evergreen has petrified: Lucy, Kana, Juvia, Levy, Bisca, and Erza. Laxus threatens to destroy the hostages unless the guild defeats his group within three hours. Fried's runes trap Makarov inside the guild and force other members into fights across Magnolia 432 433.
Laxus particularly targets Rhode, whom he considers the greatest obstacle to becoming guild master. He sees Rhode as combining the First Master's title and strategy, the Second Master's pursuit of knowledge, and the Third Master's principles. His challenge is therefore aimed at discrediting Rhode's leadership as well as proving his own strength 432.
At the cathedral, Laxus rejects Mystogan's appeal to end the conflict. Rhode, Mirajane, and Erza join the battle, forcing him to reveal his previously concealed Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic. Natsu and Gajeel subsequently arrive, but Laxus repels their combined dragon breaths 436 438 439.
The coordinated attacks of Rhode, Mirajane, and Erza gradually overwhelm him. Their magic is continually replenished by Rhode's Crown of Insight, while Laxus cannot restore his own reserves. He ultimately pours all his remaining magic into Fairy Law, but the spell harms neither his guildmates nor Magnolia's residents. Makarov explains that Laxus never truly regarded them as enemies 439.
Expulsion
After his defeat, Laxus accepts his punishment and is expelled from Fairy Tail. He apologizes before leaving, and the black guild mark on his left rib dissolves into golden starlight 440 441.
Rhode recites the obligations imposed on departing members: protect the guild's confidential information, do not exploit former clients, value one's own life, and remember cherished companions. Laxus joins him in reciting the final instruction, then thanks him 441.
Appearance
- Build and hair: Tall and upright, with blonde hair 19.
- Clothing: Wears a purple shirt during the S-Class examination and a trench coat when initiating the Strongest Battle 170 432.
- Guild mark: A black Fairy Tail emblem on his left rib, erased upon his expulsion 441.
- Magic effects: Golden lightning surrounds his body; during an intense display, electricity also streams from his eyes and mouth 96 169.
Personality
Laxus openly equates strength with worthiness. He belittles weaker members, dismisses concern for comrades as weakness, and treats the title of Fairy Tail's strongest as something he must possess. His ambition to lead the guild develops into an exclusionary plan to remove those he considers inadequate 19 321 366.
His arrogance does not prevent tactical thinking. During the cathedral battle, he persistently targets Mystogan, whose departure also leaves Erza distracted. Rhode recognizes that Laxus is considerably more calculating in combat than his provocative behavior suggests 438 439.
Fairy Law exposes the contradiction between his declarations and his actual feelings: despite calling anyone who obstructs him an enemy, he cannot make the spell harm his comrades. His eventual apology and acceptance of expulsion mark a change from his earlier refusal to acknowledge fault 439 440 441.

Trivia
- The supplied passages also identify a round-bodied painter with slender limbs as “Laxus.” This figure animates paintings to explain Rhode's rescue, while later passages credit “Laxus” with guild paintings and festival decorations. No explanation connects this portrayal to the tall lightning mage 2 100 178.
- His age is inconsistent in the supplied text: the X783 age list gives both 22 and 26, while Rhode later estimates that he is twenty-three or twenty-four 165 321.
