Background / History

Nami first appears in Orange Town while fleeing Buggy’s pirates after stealing their treasure map. She immediately exploits Luffy’s arrival by calling him her “boss,” escaping while the pirates attack him instead. She later binds Luffy and delivers him to Buggy as a bargaining chip, intending to recover the map and steal Buggy’s treasury. 11

Although she initially presents herself as willing to join Buggy, Nami refuses to fire the Buggy Ball at the imprisoned Luffy. When a pirate tries to force the issue, she attacks him with her staff and openly rejects becoming “one of [Buggy’s] cruel pirates.” 12 Her distrust of pirates stems from seeing them destroy what others cherish, though Luffy, Zoro, and Victor gradually prove themselves different from the pirates she hates. 16

After competing with Victor to loot Buggy’s vault, Nami agrees to travel with his group under a supposed debt of 300 million Beli. Victor formally gives her the navigator’s position, while retaining the crew’s funds and adding the money left to rebuild Orange Town to her debt. 19 21

Nami’s connection to Arlong Park is later revealed to be coerced.
