Ye Qingpu had never admired the view through a floor-to-ceiling window under such circumstances before.
Embarrassed yet thrilled, he hid inside his own clothes and refused to open his eyes.
Pei Jiaqian coaxed him softly, only to end up getting his hair yanked and being beaten up.
Ye Qingpu took a shower and changed into a suit, so much so that even his assistant was surprised when they came in to report on work.
"Um, Boss, those companies whose scandals were cleared from the trending searches want to come crawling back and cooperate with us again."
The assistant said.
"Weren't they all blacklisted? If they keep bothering us, send them a lawyer's letter as a warning."
Ye Qingpu sat at his desk without even looking up.
"Understood, Boss. I'll go organize the materials first."
After saying that, the assistant hurried out of the office—he had no desire to stand there as a third wheel.
Having tidied himself up, Pei Jiaqian massaged Ye Qingpu's shoulders and placed some small desserts within easy reach.
"Brother, do you remember that seaside trip you took with Jiang Jifu?" Pei Jiaqian suddenly asked.
"Mm, I remember," Ye Qingpu answered softly.
"You remember how they switched people halfway through the spa treatment too, right?"
At the mention of that, Ye Qingpu did remember. He had only learned afterward that the person had been Huo Sili, though he still did not know what Huo Sili's purpose had been at the time.
Nodding, Ye Qingpu continued reading the documents, but he quickly realized something. When he looked up again, his gaze carried a hint of scrutiny.
"Were you there too?"
"Mm. I was outside. I didn't expect him to go looking for you. I only brought it up because I wanted to ask whether he said anything to you then."
"No."
Ye Qingpu answered without hesitation.
The words had barely left his mouth when speak of the devil, and the devil arrived.
Ye Qingpu answered his private call and exchanged a few words with the caller. By the time he hung up, a clear smile had appeared on his face.
"What has you so happy, Brother?"
Pei Jiaqian crouched beside him, resting his chin on Ye Qingpu's leg.
"Wasn't I talking about cooperating with Huo Sili before? He said we can finalize it whenever we have time." Leaning back in his chair, Ye Qingpu sounded much more relaxed. "He knows you're here too and asked me to pass along his greetings."
"If Brother is well, then I'm well."
Pei Jiaqian looked up at the radiant man, who was so beautiful it was almost unreal.
Back when he was abroad, people had always said he knew how to love someone. But he knew perfectly well that before Ye Qingpu, who had long been accustomed to independence, all he could do was barely a fraction of what was needed. On the contrary, he was dull and terribly immature.
Back then, his family had been overly protective and sent him overseas. In private, he had constantly hired detectives to track Ye Qingpu's movements in the country.
From obscurity to becoming Harbor City's richest man in one leap, Pei Jiaqian had always been happy for Ye Qingpu's success. He would raise a glass of champagne from afar, sending congratulations across the sea to the lover he had not seen again.
Because the person he admired was simply too outstanding, Pei Jiaqian naturally could not afford to slack off. He had nearly worked himself to death before climbing to where he was today.
During that kidnapping, when he watched Ye Qingpu roll down from a height yet still keep him wrapped in his arms, he felt such powerful guilt and a desire to protect him for the first time.
Carrying that growing desire across more than ten years of separation, perhaps because his wish to protect Ye Qingpu had been too strong, he had successfully differentiated into an even more powerful existence—an Enigma.
When he was on the verge of no longer being able to suppress it, he was allowed to return home. The first thing he did was knock on Ye Qingpu's door.
Without thinking it through properly.
He claimed to love Ye Qingpu deeply, but it was obvious who loved whom more.
His wandering thoughts were pulled back by the office door opening. Pei Jiaqian stepped forward and took the child the assistant had brought back.
Fresh from the bath, the little one was fragrant and soft, dressed in clean clothes as well.
"Brother, shall we go eat?" Pei Jiaqian held the child with one arm and extended his hand to Ye Qingpu.
"Mm."
Ye Qingpu took off his glasses and clasped that strong, slightly cool hand.
Who could predict the future?
Fortunately, he was no longer walking alone. He had a lover who was still somewhat childish.
The same was true for Pei Jiaqian. He actively integrated himself into Ye Qingpu's life. Even if he were merely an attachment, it did not matter. He still had much to learn.
But on second thought, being able to do more for the one he loved—wasn't that a kind of happiness too?
The two stood side by side. Ye Qingpu teased the little one in Pei Jiaqian's arms, while Pei Jiaqian's gaze rested gently on Ye Qingpu's face.
Perhaps they were a couple no one thought well of. Perhaps thorns would grow again in the future.
But who knew?
Perhaps they would remain happy forever.
