The city had a large immigrant population. White birth rates were low, and some people simply did not want children, while Black people had children as easily as if it were a game. Black residents now accounted for more than fifty percent of the city's population.
The gap between rich and poor in the city was immense. Though superheroes never said so aloud, they did not actually like Black people either.
