Jean was a teacher and vice-principal at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where she also assisted Professor Charles Xavier despite the school wheelchair's ability to move independently. At this point, she was known as an intellectual beauty and the current, suppressed host of the Phoenix Force. 112 207

Her life after gaining mutant abilities was marked by anxiety and recurring nightmares. She feared harming others or destroying Xavier's School, which she regarded as home. The pressure placed on her by Professor Xavier's expectations—study, leadership, and carrying forward his ideals—contributed to the emergence of her Black Phoenix personality. 201 997

During the conflict involving Namor and the Fantastic Four, Jean's attempt to psionically calm Namor was interrupted, allowing her dark personality and the Phoenix Force to surface. She begged Daisy to kill her rather than let herself lose control, but Daisy instead helped reinforce Jean's psychic cage.
