Background and History

Kaido was born in the Voka Kingdom, a country that fought wars to fund its Celestial Tribute. He became its strongest warrior by age ten, but at thirteen its king sold him to the Marines in exchange for access to the World Conference. Kaido escaped during transport. At fifteen, before eating the Azure Dragon Fruit, he had a 70-million-berry bounty and joined the Rocks Pirates 240.

Kaido later founded the Beasts Pirates with King as his first follower. He established his headquarters in Wano Country, whose difficult approaches made it a defensible base. Kurozumi Orochi held the shogun’s title, but Kaido treated him as a puppet and used Wano’s population as labor for weapons factories 180 213 240.

Kozuki Oden once broke through Kaido’s defenses and left an X-shaped scar on his abdomen. Their duel ended after another person’s interference distracted Oden; Kaido believed he might otherwise have died. Years later, Kaido took direct control of the Flower Capital after Orochi’s death 246 334.

Appearance

Kaido is a heavily muscled man over seven meters tall, with horns on his head. His Azure Dragon transformations give him scales; in his awakened human-beast form, the scales turn purple, his muscles swell, and his eyebrows take the shape of Flame Clouds 228 447.

• Distinguishing marks — An X-shaped scar across his abdomen; half of his left horn is cut off during his later fight with Sephiroth 246 447.

Personality

Kaido prizes strength and recruits capable fighters, even offering Sephiroth a place in his crew despite their feud. He drinks heavily and can act impulsively: Queen’s death sends him straight to a Marine base seeking revenge. Beneath his brutish manner, he is capable of political calculation, keeping Orochi in power while the shogun remains useful 211 240 249 334.

Azure Dragon Fruit

Kaido possesses the Fish-Fish Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Azure Dragon Form. He can assume a giant dragon form or a scaled human-beast form; his fruit later awakens during the battle at Marineford 240 447.

• Heat Breath — Fires a powerful beam of flame from his mouth 233 251.
• Wind Scythes — Releases large numbers of cutting wind blades, capable of destroying buildings and a Marine base 233 243.
• Flame Clouds — Supports his movement in the air as though he were standing on solid ground 249.
• Flame Dragon Torch — Envelops his dragon form in intense flames. At Marineford, he uses it for Rising Dragon: Flame Bagua, an explosive attack aimed at the battlefield below 233 450.

• Conqueror’s Haki Infusion — Coats his club and body to strengthen attacks and defenses 246 249.
• Observation Haki — Can foresee attacks and detect people at a distance 244 249.
• Armament Haki — Reinforces his defenses and club strikes 249.
• Durability and recovery — Endures Doflamingo’s sustained assault without apparent injury; wounds from Sephiroth’s night-long fight heal rapidly 228 251.

Club fighting

Kaido fights with the spiked Wolf Fang Club, also called the Eight Precepts Mace. His named strikes include Thunder Bagua, Gundari Dragon Bloom, Vajra Arrow, and Conqueror of the Three Worlds: Pull to Hell 228 246 249 447.

• Pollock Island — Seeking revenge for Queen, Kaido destroys Marine G-5 Base and fights Sephiroth through the night. King’s arrival prompts Sephiroth to retreat 240 243 251 252.
• Control of Wano — After Orochi’s death, Kaido occupies the Shogun’s Palace. He and Doflamingo discuss bringing other Emperors into an attack on Marine Headquarters during Ace’s execution 334 431.
• Marineford — Sephiroth destroys much of Kaido’s elite force and wounds him repeatedly. Kaido attempts a final, battlefield-wide attack, but Sephiroth’s Dimension Shattering Slash cuts away his right arm and part of his torso. Akainu then kills him 447 450.
