Background / History

Sasuke begins as the Ninja Academy's strongest student and the surviving member of the Uchiha Clan. Aloof and proud, he dismisses Naruto as “dead last” and treats his own clan heritage as proof of his superiority. His central goal is power: he wants to surpass Itachi and avenge his clan. 8 19 102

Naruto's sudden displays of speed, strength, sensory ability, and combat skill destabilize Sasuke's self-image. Sasuke first suspects Naruto has concealed his abilities to survive the village's treatment of him, then repeatedly suffers discouragement as Naruto proves vastly stronger than expected. 11 12 24 25

Although Naruto initially presents the Bald Training Method as a joke, Sasuke seriously considers it because he is willing to sacrifice even his appearance for strength.
