Background and History

Kakashi becomes Team 7's instructor partly because Naruto carries the Nine-Tails, though his initial attention centers on Sasuke as the Uchiha survivor and academy top student. He considers Naruto and Sakura too weak to merit much interest. 19

During the Survival Exercise, Kakashi arrives late with his usual excuse, then tests the team using two bells and the threat of denying lunch to one student. Naruto evades his search, deploys a vast number of Shadow Clones, and eats a boxed lunch while Kakashi battles the clones. Kakashi spends ten minutes fighting and searching without finding Naruto's real body. 23 24

Kakashi is habitually late, casual, and fond of reading Make-Out Paradise. He initially treats Team 7's survival exercise as a way to humble three arrogant new graduates, but Naruto's tactics repeatedly disrupt his expectations. 19 23 24

He is capable of serious tactical judgment. Kakashi accurately breaks down Naruto's strategy against two rogue ninja, praises Naruto's sensory abilities, and recognizes the significance of Naruto's Chakra Nature Transformation. 29 42
