Background / History
Zeno was discovered as a baby sitting unharmed on a Wailord’s head near Big Shell Village. Village chief Kam took responsibility for him, named him Zeno, and raised him as part of his household alongside Mantine, Octillery, and Shellder. 1
Ten years later, Zeno had become known in the village for understanding Pokémon, particularly Water-types. While returning from fishing with his childhood friend Xiao Hai, he heard an injured Carvanha stranded near the river and cared for it until it recovered. When Carvanha chose to remain with him, Zeno captured it as his first Pokémon partner. 2 3 4
Kam recognized Zeno’s exceptional affinity for the sea after Zeno received Heart Scales, pearls, and a Water Stone through his interactions with Alomomola and other Pokémon. Concerned that Big Shell Village could not provide the education Zeno needed, Kam brought him to Lilycove City in search of a Trainer Academy. 6 7
When enrollment in Lilycove failed, Zeno and Kam traveled toward Rustboro City. On the Wavebreaker, Zeno entered a rookie competition with Carvanha, defeating Lier, Ueda Hidetoshi, Jia Ya, and Chao Yang before losing the final to Lin Yan. The trip also brought him new friends in Lin Yan and Jia Ya. 8 9 10
After Zeno and Kam helped recover researcher Hiraiwa’s lost briefcase, Professor Birch met Zeno and became interested in his knowledge and ability to communicate with Water-type Pokémon. Birch confirmed Zeno’s heritage as a Descendant of the People of Water and accepted him as his disciple at Littleroot Research Lab. 13 15 16
At the lab, Zeno studied Pokémon ecology, breeding, training, food, medicine, and contests while learning from Professor Birch and senior disciple Gu Yan. He also developed a Clamperl-farming proposal to reduce Big Shell Village’s reliance on dangerous fishing voyages. 17 18 19
Professor Birch approved the project and granted Zeno three months to implement it. With Gu Yan’s guidance and the cooperation of local Alomomola and Clamperl, Zeno established the Clamperl Marine Ranch, which eventually began producing pearls and Clamperl eggs under village care. 19 21 22 24 30
Personality
Zeno is curious, empathetic, and unusually diligent for his age. He is eager to learn about unfamiliar Pokémon, environments, ships, and places, often asking detailed questions and taking notes on new information. 12 14 17
He consistently considers Pokémon’s wishes before his own. He initially intended to release Carvanha despite wanting to keep it, and he refused to proceed with Clamperl farming until he could ensure the resident Pokémon would benefit from the arrangement. 4 22
Zeno is responsible toward both people and Pokémon, though Gu Yan notes that he can initially focus too much on the ideal outcome of a plan. He accepts guidance, revises his approach, and takes responsibility for the consequences of his projects. 19 22
