Background / History
Kam was once a Trainer who traveled with his starter, Mantine, when it was still a Mantyke. Though he considered his own talent ordinary, he continued journeying to see the world, later encountering Octillery and Cloyster. His wife died alongside her Marill after falling into a crack in the Ice Rock while investigating Shoal Cave; Kam eventually returned to Big Shell Village, where the villagers made him chief. 1 8
While leading villagers home from sea, Kam encountered a Wailord carrying an infant in a bedding-lined wooden basin. Realizing that the Wailord wanted to entrust the child to the village, he calmly accepted the baby, named him Zeno, and raised him as family while insisting that Zeno call him “Uncle” rather than father. 1 5
As village chief, Kam earned the villagers’ respect through his experience, hazard awareness, strength, and business contacts in Lilycove City. He led fishing and gathering voyages, sold Big Shell Village’s goods through Matsubara Shiro, and used Mantine to guide boats safely home. 1 5 7
Recognizing that Zeno’s knowledge and affinity for Water-type Pokémon had outgrown the village school, Kam tried to enroll him in Lilycove Trainer Academy. When midyear admission proved impossible, he brought Zeno onward toward Rustboro City; their journey ultimately led to Professor Birch accepting Zeno as a disciple at Littleroot Research Lab. 6 7 13 16
Kam supported Zeno’s Clamperl ranch project by taking him and Gu Yan to sea, arranging cabin construction with the villagers, and helping collect supplies from Lilycove City. He opposed Zeno giving the completed ranch away outright, knowing the villagers would refuse to take advantage of him. 22 24 26
While rescuing a Pokémon trapped in a whirlpool, Kam was thrown from Mantine and suffered a head injury that left him unconscious until the following day. The Alomomola he saved waited at Big Shell Village’s beach for two days to confirm his safety, then chose to join him as his fourth Pokémon. 27 28
Personality
Kam is calm under danger and decisive when others panic. During the Wailord encounter, he stopped the villagers from fleeing and correctly interpreted the Pokémon’s intention. 1
He is deeply protective of Zeno, providing for his education, encouraging him to experience the wider world, and worrying about his comfort whenever he travels away from home. Although he calls himself Zeno’s uncle, he has raised him as his own son. 5 7 8 30
Kam is practical but compassionate. He initially hesitated over the cost of treating Carvanha, yet used medicine worth two months of household expenses to save it; later, he risked himself to rescue a Pokémon from a whirlpool. 3 27
