Background / History
Sapphire is Professor Birch's daughter and is intimately familiar with Littleroot Research Lab's ecological park, where she regularly interacts with its resident Pokémon. She guides Zeno through the facility upon his arrival and helps obtain a Cheri Berry to treat a Psyduck affected by Stun Spore 15.
When she was five, Sapphire was caught up in a Salamence incident in Goldenrod City and received a scar on her forehead. Ruby saved her during the incident and was scarred on his forehead himself; Sapphire initially does not remember this connection 17 33.
After Zeno becomes Professor Birch's disciple, Sapphire declares him her senior brother and takes a protective, self-appointed leadership role around him. The two quickly become friends, and her behavior becomes more restrained and quieter during his first weeks at the lab 16 17.
She accompanies Zeno and Gu Yan on their assignment to copy the ancient murals of Granite Cave. During the trip, she discovers a raw Thunder Stone, hears the injured Aron that the others miss, and becomes deeply attached to it during its recovery. She names the Aron Dorara 35 39 40 41.
Appearance
Sapphire is described as lively and once enjoyed dressing up, though she later became more mischievous and tomboyish after the Salamence incident 15 17.
- Has a scar on her forehead from the Salamence incident 17 33.
- Wore a gray miner's outfit, hard hat with a lamp, and carried a small pickaxe while exploring Granite Cave 38 39.
Personality
Sapphire is energetic, curious, and impulsive. She eagerly volunteers to guide Zeno around the laboratory, insists on joining trips, enjoys crowds and competitions, and frequently seeks excitement beyond the research lab 15 31 37.
She can be boastful and demanding, claiming authority over Littleroot Town and playfully pressuring Zeno into providing extra food for Dorara. However, she is also capable of genuine reflection: after learning that Ruby's scars came from saving her, she accepts responsibility for upsetting him and gives him her treasured limited-edition Milotic stickers as an apology 33 43.
Her affection for Pokémon is sincere. She comforts the frightened Aron, insists on its medical care regardless of cost, and waits for it to recover before returning from Dewford Town 41.
