Background / History

Rukawa played for Shohoku and represented the school in the National Tournament during his first year of high school. He subsequently left Japan for three years. Haruko, his former classmate, later reflects that she was once among those who understood him best. 3

He returned as one of the most anticipated prospects in the 2006 JBa Draft. The Kobe Jaguars selected him first overall, prompting an enormous crowd reaction and establishing him as the franchise’s marquee signing. 2
