First Appearance Chapter 1, “The Prodigy Returns” 1

Background / History

Sakuragi represented Shohoku at the national tournament, where he suffered a severe back injury during the match against Sannoh. He then spent more than a year in the United States receiving surgery and recovering; by his return to Tokyo, he had regained his health and appeared taller and more robust than before. 1

Although he arrived for the JBa draft believing he would be selected there, Sakuragi learned that the Kobe Jaguars had already acquired him a year earlier through overseas signing rights. His agent, Jhn, had withheld the team’s identity so Sakuragi would not reveal it prematurely. 3

His first public days with the Jaguars were dominated by his rivalry with fellow rookie Rukawa Kaede, the first overall selection. Sakuragi challenged Rukawa to a one-on-one match in which the loser would leave the team; the contest was halted as a draw after Sakuragi injured himself diving for the ball. 5 8

After recovering, Sakuragi underwent individual swimming-based training under Maekawa Yuanhang rather than joining the Jaguars’ military-style camp. The program strengthened his core and reinforced the need to maintain his physical condition after injury. 11 12 20

Sakuragi’s preseason debut against the Nagoya Ninjas displayed his improved scoring and defensive anticipation, but Takano Jinglei provoked him into headbutting him. Sakuragi was ejected, suspended for five games, and fined 50,000 yen; he later accepted responsibility and trained while awaiting his professional debut. 15 16 17

He made his JBa debut for Kobe against the Deer Horns, opening with a tip-rebound putback dunk and an and-one layup against Kiyota Nobunaga. In the subsequent game against the Deer Horns, he used fronting defense against Maki Shinichi and finished with a double-double in his first professional game. 19 21 23

Appearance

Sakuragi is exceptionally tall, muscular, and physically imposing, with a build that makes him conspicuous even in crowds. 1

  • His formerly signature red hair had turned orange-yellow by his return from the United States. 1
  • By his reunion with Mito Yohei, his hair had changed to brown, causing old friends to struggle to recognize him. 43
  • Wears jersey number 6 for the Kobe Jaguars. 14 19
  • Possesses a powerful, explosive physique suited to rebounding, dunking, and physical defense. 19 20

Personality

Sakuragi is loud, arrogant, and relentlessly self-promoting, regularly calling himself a “genius.” His confidence often drives him to challenge stronger opponents directly, particularly Rukawa, Maki, and Sendoh. 1 5 21 45

He is also highly impulsive. When frustrated or provoked, he can abandon strategy, force difficult plays, or lash out physically; his altercation with Takano Jinglei resulted in an ejection and suspension. 6 15 16 He gradually shows greater accountability afterward, admitting fault and later vowing not to act on impulse in the new season. 16 50

Despite his immaturity, Sakuragi is fiercely hardworking. He trains through recovery, completes Maekawa’s punishing pool-cleaning and conditioning assignments, and continues solo defensive, sprinting, and shooting drills after the team camp ends. 12 13 17

Haruko Akagi remains one of his strongest motivations. Her encouragement repeatedly restores his focus, while his desire to impress her affects both his basketball ambitions and his behavior off the court. 1 6 19 38

Abilities & Skills

Explosive Athleticism

Sakuragi’s defining asset is his unusual combination of leaping ability, strength, speed, and body control.

  • Can leap from well inside the free-throw line and finish above defenders. 15

Defense and Rebounding

Sakuragi increasingly turns his instincts and athleticism into structured defensive production.

  • Reads passing lanes and steals the ball by abandoning his assignment at the correct moment. 15
  • Intercepted Maki’s pass to Jin and immediately started a fast break with Miyagi. 20
  • Developed fronting defense to deny Maki post position and disrupt the Deer Horns’ offense. 21
  • Functions as a defensive anchor when focused, using blocks, rebounds, and physical positioning to protect the paint. 23 43
  • Is vulnerable to foul trouble and defensive lapses when his attention shifts toward scoring. 21 22 40

  • Earned Maekawa’s praise for perseverance, potential, and swimming aptitude. 13
  • Displays improved core strength when finishing through Nobunaga’s shooting foul. 19
