Background / History
Captaincy and Chi Tong’s Arrival
Yu Zhu leads Ryonan’s upperclassmen when Chi Tong joins the basketball club. During the newcomers-versus-upperclassmen scrimmage, Chi Tong surpasses him at the opening tip despite being ten centimeters shorter. The upperclassmen lose, forcing Yu Zhu to reassess the newcomer’s abilities 35 77.
Recognizing Chi Tong’s potential, Yu Zhu considers relinquishing the captaincy but first challenges him to play at full strength. Chi Tong overwhelms his imposing presence and anticipates his defensive movements. Yu Zhu loses the challenge, and Chi Tong replaces him as captain that day 42 43 77.
Yu Zhu remains Ryonan’s starting center and becomes an outspoken defender of the new captain. Against Kawanohe, he insists that Chi Tong does not need to play against such opponents and takes their insults personally 73.
Prefectural Qualifiers
Yu Zhu’s interior play benefits from systematic training and Chi Tong’s guidance. Against Jinjiuwu, his improved positioning and expanded defensive coverage repeatedly shut down the opposing center’s attacks. When instructed not to hold back in the second half, he wins the jump ball decisively after an evenly matched first-half tip 109 111 114.
He accepts responsibility for guarding Shoyo’s Hanagata Toru and confidently declares that Chi Tong can lead Ryonan past both Shoyo and Hainan 148 151. Against Hainan, however, Takasago Kazuma wins the opening tip through superior timing despite Yu Zhu’s eleven-centimeter height advantage. The encounter exposes his lack of National Tournament experience 180.
National Tournament
The National Tournament fulfills an ambition Yu Zhu has trained toward for three years 215. Toyotama’s provocations test his temper both on the train and before their match, but he obeys Chi Tong’s orders to stand down. During the game, he dominates rebounds and putbacks, then physically places himself between Chi Tong and an opponent attempting to attack him 213 221 230 235.
Against Daiei Academy, Yu Zhu wins the opening tip and finishes Chi Tong’s concealed pass with a dunk for Ryonan’s first basket. Later, he recovers a ball knocked loose by Xiangtian Yanyi and sends a full-court pass to Sendoh for a three-pointer 248 263.
His performance against Great Wall combines preparation with force: he reads and blocks Banshen Dahan’s baby hook, then displays a much higher leap at the second-half tip. He also breaks free from Banshen’s positioning to block Matsuoka Moxia and immediately start a fast break 287 292 294.
Aiwa Academy provides tougher resistance. Its center disrupts Yu Zhu’s dunk attempt, while later screening actions prevent him from contesting Zhu Xingda. Nevertheless, his defense restricts Aiwa’s interior scoring, and he converts Yanyi’s pass into a dunk that extends Ryonan’s lead to 108–90 311 323 327 334.
Setbacks Against Elite Centers
Morishige Hiroshi overwhelms Yu Zhu with superior reactions, explosiveness, and judgment. Chi Tong identifies complacency from Ryonan’s long winning streak as an additional cause of his poor performance. After repeatedly demanding the ball in anger, Yu Zhu recognizes his limitations and apologizes for allowing his impulsiveness to hurt the team 363 364 365.
He subsequently makes more practical decisions, passing out of a double-team rather than forcing an attack and boxing Morishige out while Chi Tong disrupts his movements. After another overpowering collision, Yu Zhu resolves to interfere with Morishige rather than compete with him through strength alone 373 381 385.
In the national final, Masashi Kawata’s polished positioning and post technique repeatedly neutralize Yu Zhu’s strength. Even a three-man defensive encirclement fails to contain Kawata, whose shooting fake leaves Yu Zhu off-balance. Yu Zhu continues contesting him with everything he has, but remains at a clear technical and experiential disadvantage 489 490 512 527.
Retirement
After winning the Summer League and Autumn National Sports Festival in his final school year, Yu Zhu and Ikegami Ryoji carefully decide to leave basketball and focus on their studies. Both retire without regrets, removing two core senior players from Ryonan’s roster before the Winter Cup 601.
Appearance
- Towering stature: At 202 cm, he stands eleven centimeters taller than Hainan’s Takasago Kazuma 180.
- Powerful build: Broad shoulders, heavily developed muscles, and a solid frame make him an imposing presence around the basket 81 221.
- Habitual posture: Often stands with his arms folded, chest raised, and back straight 235 453 475.
- Intimidating expression: His sharp gaze and mountain-like presence can pressure opponents before play begins 81 350.
Personality
Yu Zhu is proud, blunt, and intensely competitive, particularly against fellow centers. He is not naturally talkative, but insults directed at Ryonan or Chi Tong can provoke visible anger. Toyotama’s taunts bring him close to confrontation, although his sense of responsibility as a former captain keeps him from striking first 73 213 221.
His pride does not prevent him from recognizing a stronger leader. He willingly considers surrendering the captaincy to Chi Tong, follows his instructions, and publicly credits him with Ryonan’s ability to challenge established powerhouses 42 114 151.
Repeated victories also make him complacent. When Morishige exposes that weakness, Yu Zhu initially reacts with stubborn aggression, then accepts responsibility and apologizes. His growth is not a complete disappearance of his temper: frustration against Kawata later produces another fiercely obsessive response 364 365 491.
He can appear dependable while concealing his own anxiety. Before the Sannoh final, he advises Yueye Hongming to settle his nerves by taking extra warm-up shots, even as his own legs subtly bounce beneath his otherwise composed posture 475.
Abilities & Skills
Interior Strength and Positioning

- Forces Banshen Dahan half a meter aside to escape his hold and contest a shot 294.
- Boxes Morishige out to deny rebounding opportunities 385.
- Holds a sufficiently stable base that Kawata abandons an attempted power turnaround and looks for another option 479.
Shot Blocking and Defensive Coverage
His defense extends beyond simply occupying the space beneath the basket.
- Repeatedly blocks Jinjiuwu’s center and closes off its interior scoring route 109 111.
- Blocks Jin Soichiro’s three-point attempt with a quick defensive response 181.
- Anticipates Banshen Dahan’s signature baby hook 287.
- Recovers from an interior hold to stop Matsuoka Moxia’s shot 294.

Athletic Development
| Development | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Improved positioning and defensive range | 109 | Better use of his center of gravity accompanies wider defensive coverage and repeated blocks. |
| Increased jumping ability and strength | 180 | Explicitly attributed to special training with Chi Tong. |
| Higher second-half leap against Great Wall | 292 | Surpasses his first-half jump and decisively beats Banshen Dahan to the ball after Chi Tong’s advice. |
Limitations
- Timing and experience: Takasago wins a tip despite being much shorter; Kawata repeatedly defeats him through positioning, rhythm, and fakes 180 489 512.
- Balance during turns: Morishige’s coach identifies pressure applied during Yu Zhu’s turning motion as a way to disrupt his lower-body stability 370.
- Stronger physical opponents: Naito Tetsuya knocks him backward in midair, while Morishige overpowers him in direct confrontations 100 381.
- Defensive reach versus coverage: An opponent’s shift toward mid-range shooting can force him to choose between protecting the paint and extending outward 156.
- Emotional discipline: Complacency and attempts to settle individual contests through force can undermine his contribution to the team 363 364 365.
Relationships
