Background / History

The Old Shinobi Order

The Shinobi World was divided among nations governed by daimyo and defended by hidden ninja villages. The established arrangement allowed ninja to fight while the daimyo remained secure. Ordinary people still faced difficult lives, despite not paying the Heavenly Tribute imposed in the Pirate World 134 154.

The founding of ninja villages initially raised hopes for peace, but Hashirama Senju’s death was followed by renewed conflict. Three Shinobi World Wars deepened hostility between villages. When Ye Zhuo arrived, Hiruzen Sarutobi again held the Hokage position, Rasa led Sand Village, and the younger generation had not yet undergone its major trials 130 146.

Shadow Empire Expansion

Ye Zhuo’s village-building project began with Tsunade’s forced recruitment. He subsequently equipped his followers with Demon Hidden Village headbands and expanded from recruitment into territorial conquest 116 118.

The deaths of the Lightning, Water, and Hot Water daimyo destabilized the existing order. Water and Hot Water fell under the Shadow Empire, while a summit intended to coordinate resistance collapsed into accusations and competing village interests. Ye Zhuo then conquered the neutral Land of Iron, severing Lightning’s connection with the remaining great nations 130 131.

By the formation of the Ninja Alliance, only Earth, Fire, and Wind remained outside his control. Civilian migration weakened their resistance: one-tenth of Wind’s population had fled to the Shadow Empire, including slaves and displaced samurai 145.

Fourth Great Ninja War

The alliance formed around Konoha, Sand, and Hidden Rock. Ye Zhuo used White Zetsu to revive past shinobi through Impure World Reincarnation, bringing former Kage and other legendary fighters into the conflict. He declared that the war was his campaign to eliminate the opposing forces, rather than their crusade against him 145 146.

Hidden Rock was devastated and occupied first. Konoha and Sand were subsequently secured, leaving the Allied Shinobi Forces without their home bases. Shadowkhan, Pacifistas, recruited shinobi, and Ye Zhuo’s own clones overwhelmed the remaining resistance. Even Hashirama and Madara joined forces against him 151 158 159 160 162 164.

Ye Zhuo declared the Fourth Great Ninja War over and imprisoned the defeated fighters in Impel Down. Hinata’s coerced recruitment completed his main quest and unlocked the Book of Ages, allowing him to make written changes to reality 167.

Reconstructed World

Within a few months, technology advanced by decades, hunger ended, and wars ceased. Former villages were recreated at Impel Down, while the mainland became a unified society combining chakra and technology 168.

Ye Zhuo later replaced the population’s chakra and bloodlines through the Demon Tree and Infinite Tsukuyomi, completing the process in less than three minutes. This countered Kaguya’s claim that the world’s survival was bound to her. After her submission, he presented his “Perfect Shinobi World” and formally opened the Impel Down Ecological Ninja Culture Amusement Park 175 176.

Geography and Major Locations

Imperial Domains

After the Shadow Empire became the world’s sole power, the former nations were renamed as domains 172.

Region Former Name / Description

Hot Springs Territory Former Land of Hot Water; an industrialized territory where Orochimaru investigated the empire’s infrastructure 129 137 176.

  • Impel Down — A six-level settlement and prison housing captured ninja and samurai. It develops into a cultural attraction containing recreated hidden villages 136 168 176.
  • Rain Hidden Village — A strategic passage between Earth, Fire, and Wind, and the location of the Demon Tree 145 146 147.
  • Restored Uzumaki Homeland — Restored after the Book of Ages rewrites the Uzumaki clan’s history as one of survival in hiding 169.

Government and Society

Administration and Security

  • Abolition of daimyo rule: Conquered daimyo are publicly paraded and executed; the old feudal authorities disappear from public memory 129 168 169.
  • Shadowkhan administration: Tireless summoned forces initially handle administration, security, production, and military defense 129.
  • Technological policing: By the unveiling of the Perfect Shinobi World, Pacifistas patrol city streets and Seraphim guard individual areas. Shadowkhan retain regional guarding duties 176.
  • Personal rule: Ye Zhuo’s portraits and statues are widespread. Hidden Demon Village and his palaces remain inaccessible sacred places even after humanity develops interstellar travel 176 177.

Civilian Life and Captivity

  • Food and employment: Automated food-production machines, large farms, and factories offer cheap food and work, attracting migrants from the remaining independent territories 148.
  • Living standards: Agricultural machinery, daily necessities, modern transport, and new energy sources improve ordinary life 129 136.
  • Prison cooperation: Captives in Impel Down exchange village techniques and train together, creating a working cross-village alliance before the outside Ninja Alliance succeeds 136.
  • Forced labor and tourism: Defeated shinobi are assigned construction and maintenance work. Their former villages and ninjutsu become paid attractions 130 158 168.
  • Conflicting responses: Civilians praise Ye Zhuo for peace and prosperity, while captives resent the loss of their homes, freedom, and former identities 136 176 179.

Chakra and Supernatural Systems

Chakra-Based Arts

  • Principal disciplines: Shinobi use ninjutsu, taijutsu, genjutsu, sealing techniques, ninja body techniques, and space-time ninjutsu 152.
  • Bloodline abilities: Kekkei genkai are regarded as exceptional powers. Kekkei tōta, such as Ohnoki’s Dust Release, are extraordinarily rare, while bloodline net is unheard of among the shinobi confronting Ye Zhuo 160.
  • Recorded knowledge: The perfected Ninja World Encyclopedia contains the world’s techniques, swordsmanship, technological ninja tools, and history 142.

Tailed Beasts and Jinchūriki

  • Shared bodies: A jinchūriki houses a tailed beast within a human body; Shendu identifies this as two souls occupying one body 150.
  • Strategic importance: Villages, Akatsuki, and Ye Zhuo compete over tailed beasts and their hosts. All nine are eventually collected at Impel Down 134 164.
  • Imperial transformation: Ye Zhuo turns the nine tailed beasts into Demonic Path versions during his confrontation with Kaguya 175.

Sage Arts and Planetary Energy

  • Sage traditions: Toad, Ryūchi, and Slug Sage arts exist within the world’s power system 167.
  • Unusual vitality: The emergence of Sage Jutsu and the capacity to produce Chakra Fruits more than once mark the Shinobi World as exceptionally rich in energy and life 171.
  • Pure Land: Souls can reach the Pure Land after death, but Ye Zhuo can retrieve them through Impure World Reincarnation 167.

Infinite Tsukuyomi and Later History
