Background / History

The Poison King is a surviving member of the Medicine-Poison Sect and the junior brother of Doctor Yun, later identified as Yun Zexuan, the sect's thirty-fifth-generation head. Following the sect's destruction, he became consumed with advancing its poison arts by any means necessary, despite Doctor Yun's assertion that their sect's purpose was to cure illness and restore life. 111 112 115

He was acquainted with Zheng Yu's father and was summoned to the Zheng residence when Zheng Shen was crippled. He stated that he knew how to harm people rather than heal them, and judged Zheng Shen's condition incurable. 19 When Liu Sandao infiltrated the Zheng Clan to assassinate Zheng Yu, the Poison King refused to risk himself protecting Zheng Yu; he only required that the clan's medicinal fields be left intact. 55

During the struggle around Azure Radiance Mountain and the East Devil Palace, he operated alongside Feng Chang while secretly poisoning those around him. He admitted to creating the Demon-Luring Incense used in Feng Chang's blood-sacrifice scheme, then later fought the Black Coffin Entity, He Zutao, with the other major experts. His venomous threads entered He Zutao's body through a wound and briefly disrupted the demon's movements. 74 84 86

Afterward, lingering Heartless Tears poison remained in his own body, and he concluded that becoming a Spirit Cultivator was his only way forward. He used plague victims and corpses gathered by Blackwind Stronghold to refine Corpse-Poison Wushang Profound Qi, then unleashed an epidemic and raised controlled corpses to throw Verdant Grain County into chaos. 97 102 103

The Poison King subsequently took control of Blackwind Stronghold. He killed Hei Kui, refined Old Sword into a Black Sinking Corpse, and led controlled bandits into Verdant Grain County. His invasion and the plague allowed him to gather additional Corpse-Poison Wushang Profound Qi from the Zheng Clan's corpse pool. 100 105 106 110

After collecting two jade bottles of Profound Qi, he was intercepted by Doctor Yun and the three clan heads. He fought his way toward escape but was overwhelmed by Doctor Yun's Five-Poison Cauldron, a Spirit Treasure that completely countered his poison arts. 110 111 112

The Poison King was pinned beneath the cauldron and remained defiant, arguing that the Profound Qi was necessary to revive the Medicine-Poison Sect. Doctor Yun rejected his methods and used the cauldron to extract the toxins he had cultivated throughout his life. Doctor Yun later refined an antidote from those toxins and absorbed and purified the remaining Corpse-Poison Wushang Profound Qi. The Poison King is patient, calculating, and intensely prideful in his mastery of poison. He treats poison as both a weapon and a lifelong path, dismissing ordinary morality in favor of survival, power, and personal advancement. 70 106

He is willing to sacrifice entire communities to create the resources needed for a breakthrough, regarding the weak as prey for the strong. Even so, his certainty occasionally gives way to anxiety: he fears the consequences of his master's notes, the poison lingering within him, and the prospect of being unable to reach Spirit Cultivation. 97 102 106

His ambition is also tied to a belief that he is carrying on the Medicine-Poison Sect's legacy. Even while being defeated, he insists that the revival of the sect justifies the Profound Qi refined from human lives.
