When Chen Sheng rang Jiang Qiao's doorbell, Jiang Qiao was still sprawled on the sofa, sleeping like the dead.
His pajama top had ridden up to his chest, exposing the sleek contours of his abs, while his pajama pants hung loosely off his hipbones.
Shi Junyi's gaze lingered for a moment on the full, round, pert curve barely concealed beneath the fabric. Ignoring the doorbell, he woke Jiang Qiao.
"Go get changed."
Still bleary-eyed, Jiang Qiao yawned and glanced at the face displayed on the screen by the door. "Looks like Chen Sheng. I'll open the door first."
Shi Junyi frowned and repeated, "Go get changed."
Jiang Qiao looked at the pajamas Shi Junyi was wearing. The shirt and dress pants he had worn before were still sitting on top of the washing machine in the second-floor bathroom.
They were dirty with soil. Shi Junyi definitely would not wear them again.
"Do you want to change too, brother? My clothes should fit you about right," he asked.
Shi Junyi hesitated.
"They're clean," Jiang Qiao added.
Only then did Shi Junyi give a haughty nod.
When Chen Sheng saw no movement inside, he rang the doorbell again.
Shi Junyi took out his phone, made a call, and said to Chen Sheng, "Wait."
Jiang Qiao looked at the phone in Shi Junyi's hand, puzzled. "You could've just shouted. He can hear you from outside."
Shi Junyi said, "Are you teaching me how to do things?"
Jiang Qiao mimed zipping his mouth shut.
He led Shi Junyi to the second-floor walk-in closet, casually pulled on a set of casual clothes, and let Shi Junyi choose for himself.
There were not many clothes in this small villa. Shi Junyi picked through them for ages before finding a jacket that was barely acceptable.
The moment he took it off the hanger and lowered his head, he spotted a pair of white underwear tied with thin strings at both sides in the corner of the closet.
The kind boys wore.
Judging by the size, it clearly did not belong to Jiang Qiao.
It was about the same size as that little duck from the night before last.
The two stared at each other. Jiang Qiao opened his mouth. "This is an accident."
Shi Junyi sneered. "You really know how to have fun, Jiang Qiao."
Calling him brother this and brother that, daring to talk about a sweetheart—Jiang Qiao had been treating Shi Junyi like a plaything, even making him soften last night instead of shooting him dead.
He tossed the jacket at Jiang Qiao and turned to leave.
Jiang Qiao felt wronged enough to die and silently cursed Fu Zhilan as a little menace.
He chased after Shi Junyi downstairs and watched him step out of the house in his pajamas and get into the black Maybach.
Chen Sheng exchanged a glance with Jiang Qiao, silently asking, [Did you piss him off?]
Jiang Qiao shrugged, tacitly admitting it.
Chen Sheng sucked in a sharp breath and kept signaling at Jiang Qiao, telling him to take responsibility for the mess he had made.
Jiang Qiao wanted to, too, but he had barely bent down by Shi Junyi's car window. He had not even had time to say a word, much less open the door.
At Shi Junyi's instruction, the driver pulled away.
Leaving Chen Sheng and Jiang Qiao standing there at a loss.
"What did you do to him?" Chen Sheng asked in horror.
Jiang Qiao rubbed his chin, lost in thought.
Shi Junyi was angry.
Over a pair of underwear.
Watching the black Maybach gradually disappear at the end of the road, Jiang Qiao said to Chen Sheng, "Do you smell vinegar?"
Chen Sheng shook his head. "I only smell killing intent."
Jiang Qiao frowned, not daring to jump to conclusions now.
When the city gate caught fire, the fish in the moat suffered.
Chen Sheng was caught in the crossfire and abandoned by the roadside. Looking at the unreliable Jiang Qiao, he had no choice but to brace himself and call Shi Junyi.
"Young master."
Shi Junyi's voice came through the phone, devoid of warmth. "Speak."
"Have you noticed you left something behind?" Chen Sheng asked cautiously.
"What?" Shi Junyi asked.
Chen Sheng answered vaguely, "Like two bodyguards, perhaps?"
Shi Junyi said, "There's only one. Get a taxi back yourself."
Chen Sheng gave an oh. "Then what about the other one?"
"Make him get lost."
Shi Junyi hung up after saying that.
Jiang Qiao looked at Chen Sheng. "What did he say?"
Chen Sheng relayed, "He told you to get lost."
Jiang Qiao sighed. Defeated before the campaign had even begun—what rotten luck.
Seeing Jiang Qiao's unpleasant expression, Chen Sheng remembered that, during the attack that night, Jiang Qiao had led Shi Junyi away while also helping them draw enemy fire. Out of consideration for that, he asked, "Do you still want to stay with the Shi family?"
"Obviously," Jiang Qiao said.
At first, he had come for the million-yuan annual salary. Later, after meeting Shi Junyi, he had suddenly been overcome by lust and changed his mind, deciding to win the beauty's heart instead.
Now he had neither won the man nor earned the money. He had nothing to show for it, so of course he could not just get lost.
"Can you save me?" Jiang Qiao asked.
Chen Sheng shook his head. "I can't, but someone can."
An hour later, Jiang Qiao got out of the taxi and saw the Shi family's full estate for the first time: an enormous private manor.
Green vines climbed the tall bronze gates. Chen Sheng stood beneath the camera, and the red light on the facial-recognition system turned green as the gates opened.
Beyond them lay vast lawns and flowerbeds, fountains, sculptures, and all kinds of trees Jiang Qiao did not recognize, all of which looked rather old.
A peacock with a blue-green tail saw them coming and flapped up into a tree.
About a kilometer away stood two white, three-story buildings connected by a glass corridor.
Farther beyond them, the coastline was clearly visible.
Jiang Qiao entered one of the white buildings. As he passed through the glass corridor, he even saw that room with the sharks.
Following Chen Sheng through a maze of twists and turns, he arrived at the door of an entirely white room, thoroughly disoriented.
Chen Sheng spoke to the surveillance camera outside the door. "Miss, I've brought him."
The heavy door slowly slid open to either side.
Standing outside, Jiang Qiao saw a woman before an operating table, dressed in pristine white surgical scrubs, her hair pinned up with meticulous precision.
Shi Jiao turned around, holding up two hands clad in white latex gloves. Red bloodstains covered both her hands and her body.
She gave Chen Sheng and Jiang Qiao a gentle smile utterly at odds with all that blood. "Wait a moment. I'll be done soon."
After saying that, she turned back and bent over the operating table, continuing whatever she had been doing.
Shi Jiao's features somewhat resembled Shi Junyi's, though her lines were far softer. She was nothing like the widow rumored to have driven three husbands to their deaths.
She looked at least ten years younger.
Perhaps because she was simply too stunning, or perhaps because the setting was so inappropriate, her appearance and manner did not call a doctor to mind at all.
She seemed more like a psychopathic serial killer.
Jiang Qiao could not help secretly wondering whether her three former husbands had been pinned to an operating table for human dissection and experiments.
Chen Sheng did not dare breathe too loudly, and Jiang Qiao did not dare speak either.
A moment later, a hidden door in the operating room opened first, and Shen Guiyi emerged from within in sterile clothing, carrying an incubator.
At the same time, Shi Jiao finished what she was doing, switched off the surgical light, covered the "thing" on the operating table with a sterile surgical drape, and removed her gloves.
When Shen Guiyi saw Jiang Qiao, she gave an amused sound. "I told you long ago that the eldest young master is hard to serve, didn't I? Have you come over from the dark side to the light?"
Looking at the pair of murderous maniacs, Jiang Qiao thought, Who's in the dark and who's in the light is still hard to say.
