The bodyguard dormitory was a small two-bedroom, one-living-room, one-bathroom apartment. It was tastefully decorated and fully furnished. Aside from never seeing daylight, the environment was quite good.
Jiang Qiao stood beside the sofa, preparing to try on the set of clothes Chen Sheng had given him.
He had just taken off his shirt and undone his belt when a whistle sounded behind him.
Jiang Qiao turned around and saw a gorgeous woman in a red, form-fitting slip dress, with a smoking-hot figure.
Her long curls were casually pinned behind her head, and a ladies' cigarette hung from her lips as she teased, "Nice body."
Jiang Qiao calmly slipped on his shirt without the slightest embarrassment. "Yours is pretty nice too, sis."
The woman asked Jiang Qiao, "New here? How did you get in?"
The question sounded rather familiar, like the soul-searching interrogation a cellblock boss would give a new inmate.
So Jiang Qiao said, "You really know how to joke, sis. I'm a decent kid from a respectable family."
The woman rolled her eyes and held out a hand to Jiang Qiao. "Fine. I'm your respectable roommate, Shen Guiyi."
"Jiang Qiao." Jiang Qiao lightly shook Shen Guiyi's fingertips, then quickly let go.
"Whose man are you?" Shen Guiyi stubbed out her cigarette, took two whiskey glasses from the rack, and placed one in front of Jiang Qiao.
She then scanned her fingerprint on the safe, took out a bottle of whiskey, and poured them each a drink.
Drinking was forbidden during work hours.
That was why Shen Guiyi kept her liquor in the safe.
Jiang Qiao clinked glasses with her. "I heard from Chen Sheng that bodyguards are assigned according to the job."
Shen Guiyi neither confirmed nor denied it. "That applies to ordinary bodyguards."
Jiang Qiao understood. He had a general understanding of the Shi family. Shi Xiao'an had two sons and a daughter.
His eldest daughter, Shi Jiao, was already thirty-five and had married three times. Each husband had died within a year of the marriage.
Shi Junyi was the eldest son. He also had a younger brother still in high school, Shi Youxi, the son of Shi Junyi's stepmother. According to the original text, he was a scumbag with twisted intentions.
Jiang Qiao asked, "Then, Sister Guiyi, you work for Shi Jiao?"
Shen Guiyi's red lips curved up. "Smart."
She continued, "Since Chen Sheng had you stay here, it was probably the eldest young master's order. Shi Youxi would never put his own people here with me."
Everyone knew that Shi Jiao and Shi Junyi were full siblings, grasshoppers tied to the same rope.
Since it was their first meeting, they did not discuss anything more in depth.
After finishing their drinks, Shen Guiyi took the initiative to wash the glasses. She yawned and said she was going to shower and catch up on sleep.
Jiang Qiao then entered the room opposite Shen Guiyi's and lay facedown on the bed, playing Tetris on a tablet with no signal.
At six in the evening, Chen Sheng knocked on Jiang Qiao's door and handed him a Glock. "Turn it in when you get back."
Jiang Qiao was agile, but his marksmanship was not particularly good.
He had only handled a gun twice, and both times had been at Jiang Zhenhai's place.
But he was hardly about to admit that. He merely smiled, put the gun away, and said to Chen Sheng, "Got it."
Before leaving the bodyguard residential area, a mute auntie around fifty conducted a routine body search on the four bodyguards about to carry out the mission.
She took Jiang Qiao's personal phone, cash, and identification documents from him, gave him a reproachful look, and put them into a transparent sealed bag.
The auntie signed to Jiang Qiao, and Chen Sheng translated, "You'll get them back when the job is done."
Jiang Qiao shrugged and accepted an old-fashioned phone, which he was only allowed to have while on missions, along with an earpiece for contacting his companions at any time.
He then followed Chen Sheng to the Shi family garden, to the only road vehicles had to take when leaving the estate.
By then, besides Jiang Qiao and Chen Sheng, two other people were already waiting there: Chris and a long-haired man with a small knot tied in his hair.
The man nodded at Chen Sheng, looked Jiang Qiao up and down, and pulled four small wooden sticks from his pocket.
"What are those for?" Jiang Qiao asked.
"Drawing lots. One person has to ride in the same car as the young master," Chen Sheng said.
"I'll go first." Chris drew one first, held his breath, and looked at the bottom of the wooden stick as though heading to his execution. A red dot was printed there.
His face immediately lit up, and he let out a long breath. "Not me! God bless!"
The long-haired man hurriedly took one himself and said with relief, "Not me either."
Chen Sheng and Jiang Qiao exchanged a look and reached out at the same time, each taking one.
Then their faces both fell.
The bottom of Chen Sheng's stick was completely smooth, with nothing on it, while Jiang Qiao's, like Chris's and the other man's, bore a red dot.
Chen Sheng cursed under his breath, shoved the stick back at the long-haired man, and looked unhappy.
Jiang Qiao lifted a brow and nudged him. "How about... I take your place?"
Chris sucked in a sharp breath. "Are you crazy?"
"I owe you one!" Chen Sheng said at once, afraid Jiang Qiao would change his mind a second later.
Although Shi Junyi had never treated his subordinates poorly and generally did not speak to them, they still wished to stay as far away from their employer as possible.
They were terrified that one wrong word would get them tossed into the fish tank to keep that bull shark company.
Only then did the long-haired man look directly at Jiang Qiao. Clicking his tongue, he said, "A warrior, huh? What's your name?"
"Jiang Qiao."
"Sang Ye." Sang Ye held out his hand to Jiang Qiao.
Sang Ye. Jiang Qiao knew him. The original text had mentioned him: Shi Junyi's head bodyguard, skilled in combat and bad-tempered.
Unfortunately, he eventually betrayed Shi Junyi. Shi Junyi had played along, caught him red-handed, broken his legs, and thrown him into the crocodile pool.
Jiang Qiao looked at Sang Ye's somewhat rough hand, pulled a crumpled tissue from his pocket, and handed it to him. "Did you not wash your face before coming out? You've got eye gunk."
Sang Ye stared at the wad of tissue, which no one knew what it had been used for, and his expression stiffened.
He had a bad temper and was liable to turn hostile at any moment. Just as he was about to grab Jiang Qiao by the collar, two black Maybachs slowly appeared in their line of sight, one after the other.
Jiang Qiao did not even glance at Sang Ye's expression. He straightened his clothes, smiled, and pulled open the rear door of the first car.
He plopped down beside Shi Junyi. "Good evening, brother."
Before Shi Junyi could speak, the driver in the front noticed that Jiang Qiao was unfamiliar and kindly reminded him, "No one sits beside the young master. Please sit in the front."
Jiang Qiao winked at Shi Junyi. "We've sat even closer than this before. You don't mind, do you, brother?"
Shi Junyi was still working on his laptop, wearing gold-rimmed, zero-prescription blue-light-blocking glasses.
He was impeccably dressed, looking like a refined scoundrel, devastatingly sexy.
He kept his eyes on the computer screen and did not spare Jiang Qiao even a glance.
He only said to the driver, "Drive."
Throughout the ride, Jiang Qiao's gaze remained fixed on Shi Junyi.
From his spotless leather shoes, to the iron-gray suit pants wrapping his straight, long legs, to his neat, clean silk shirt without a single wrinkle.
And finally, that face that made little Jiang Qiao stand at attention every time he thought about it at night.
The undisguised, burning stare eventually made Shi Junyi turn to look at Jiang Qiao.
"What are you looking at?" Shi Junyi asked.
Jiang Qiao said, "The material and texture of this shirt. It suits you very well, brother. And the glasses—they look great too."
Shi Junyi raised a hand and touched Jiang Qiao's face.
The shirt's soft enough. It would suit you better stripped off and used to tie your hands than worn on your body. The glasses look good too. They'd look even better for roleplay.
He pressed his thumb firmly against the clean corner of Jiang Qiao's mouth. "Is that so? What did you sneak a bite of? Your mouth is so sweet."
Jiang Qiao licked the corner of his lips, seemingly brushing Shi Junyi's finger by accident, and smiled. "You won't know whether it's sweet until you taste it."
The soft, warm, wet sensation swept over Shi Junyi's fingertips. He withdrew his hand, and the smile on his face instantly vanished.
"If you dare drink before a mission again, I'll make sure you drink your fill in one go."
