Arc 41The Pilgrims Defy the Heavens

Chu Yang, Sun Wukong, and Tang Monk defied the schemes of Buddhist powers, rescued the suffering, and continued west with Tang Monk embracing the journey more freely. The arc left them camped near Wild Goose Slope, keeping the suspicious Fox Demon Su Wanwan under watch.

  • Chu Yang and Sun Wukong exposed the Lion Camel Ridge demons’ crimes, forced them to compensate the victims, and continued west with Tang Monk.
  • Chu Yang helped Tang Monk and Sun Wukong destroy Immaculate City, and Tang Monk rejected Guanyin Bodhisattva’s rules and renewed his resolve to travel onward.
  • Bai Ling injured Sun Wukong with the Brahma Soul-Suppressing Seal, but Chu Yang led the group to Wuzhuang Temple, where Sun Wukong recovered with a Ginseng Fruit and killed Bai Ling.
  • Buddha Tathagata failed to probe Chu Yang’s origins and ordered the Buddhas not to provoke him, while the pilgrims reached Tianfeng City and enjoyed its pleasures.

Arc 42The Road on Their Own Terms

Su Wanwan joined Chu Yang’s party and grew closer to them as they faced the dangers of Moon-Return Marsh. After Chu Yang revealed that many scripture-journey trials had been staged, the group thwarted Guanyin’s subtle scheme at Xuanyun Temple and made Su Wanwan lead negotiations with the demons in the forest.

  • Chu Yang kept Su Wanwan busy with chores until the Demon King came to reclaim her, but Sun Wukong defeated him and Chu Yang let Su Wanwan stay with the group.
  • Su Wanwan helped the party through Moon-Return Marsh, where she broke her Protective Bone to save Tang Monk before Chu Yang and Sun Wukong killed the Marsh-Dwelling Mother.
  • Chu Yang cared for Su Wanwan during her recovery and bought her clothes and gifts in Linchuan Prefecture, while she grew more comfortable with the group.
  • Su Wanwan challenged the party’s leisurely pace, and Chu Yang and Sun Wukong revealed that Tathagata and Guanyin had arranged many of the scripture journey’s trials.
  • Guanyin tried to divide the travelers at Xuanyun Temple by replacing its residents with agents, but Chu Yang turned the agents against one another until Tathagata withdrew them.
  • The party left Xuanyun Temple and entered a miasma-filled forest, where Chu Yang encouraged Su Wanwan to confront its demons while he and Sun Wukong backed her up.
  • Su Wanwan and Chu Yang forced the forest’s demons to let the party pass, including the Pool Master, the Wolf King, the Vine Ghosts, and the Old Scorpion Demon.
  • At camp, Chu Yang and Sun Wukong praised Su Wanwan for standing up to the demons, and at dawn Chu Yang asked her to keep leading the group.

Arc 43The Fox Tomb and Desert Ambush

Su Wanwan trained under Bai Xi, strengthened Yuehua’s seal, and proved herself against the Wolf Clan before joining the group with a young white wolf. As the travelers crossed the Mingsha Desert, the black dragon’s demons launched a larger attack on them.

  • Su Wanwan led Chu Yang, Sun Wukong, and Tang Monk to Moon-Perch Ridge, where Bai Xi agreed to teach her Fox Clan cultivation.
  • Bai Xi guided Su Wanwan into the Inner Tomb and revealed that Yuehua’s seal would fail within three years unless Su Wanwan reinforced it.
  • Su Wanwan cultivated beneath the Moon Heart while Chu Yang and Sun Wukong fought the Mist Wolves, then defeated a wolf scout and helped close the fissure in the seal.
  • The Wolf King asked Chu Yang to help free the Wolf Clan under restrictions, and Su Wanwan defeated Qingya before stabilizing Yuehua’s seal for twenty years.
  • Su Wanwan left Bai Xi and welcomed a young white wolf into the party as they traveled toward the Mingsha Desert.
  • The Black-Robed Demon demanded Tang Monk, but the group repelled the attack and learned the demons intended to return with reinforcements.
  • Feilian and Quqi led a desert demon horde against the travelers, and Feilian’s attack on Tang Monk was deflected before Sun Wukong shattered Feilian’s left arm with the Golden Staff.
