I Said There Was a Containment Breach, Are Your Ears Dragon Ears?! [1st Update]
Anomalous Containment File: No. 173
In the center of a concrete room covered in old bloodstains stood a concrete sculpture covered in graffiti.
Its arms stretched straight forward, its posture rigid yet eerie, as though it might come alive the next second.
It bore meaningless graffiti. Its peanut-like head stared blankly ahead, and above that distinctive graffiti was a smile that seemed neither quite a smile nor not.
At first glance, the sculpture even seemed somewhat comical.
But those in the know understood.
It was by no means ordinary. It was one of the anomalous entities classified at the highest danger level.
This entity was the most dangerous one recorded in the existing files and also the most mysterious entity in existence today.
Designation: 173
Rumor had it that if anyone looked away from it for even a second, it would instantly snap the necks of nearby living creatures. Fortunately, the entity seemed interested only in necks. The bad news was that it was interested only in necks.
For that reason, it was monitored around the clock and had a dedicated containment file.
File Record Item Number: 173 Threat Level: Euclid Containment Protocol: SCP-173 must be locked inside a sealed containment chamber. No fewer than three personnel may enter the area, and the door must be locked immediately after entry. During operations and upon completion, at least two personnel must maintain continuous visual contact with SCP-173. Description: SCP-173 was transferred to Site-19 in 1993. Its origin is unknown. It was constructed of concrete and rebar, with traces of Krylon spray paint remaining on its surface. The entity was highly hostile but incapable of movement while directly observed. Under any circumstances, a break in visual contact could lead to fatal consequences. Personnel therefore had to remind one another when blinking. Theoretically, as long as uninterrupted visual lock was maintained, SCP-173 could pose no threat. An experienced three-person team could even complete containment procedures with almost no casualties.
However, today's situation was entirely different.
Screeech—!!
A sharp sound of tearing metal suddenly came from the several-ton titanium alloy door.
The guards stationed outside instantly tensed and swiftly reported the anomaly. Surveillance footage showed SCP-173 slamming into the door with unprecedented ferocity, its strength far beyond anything previously recorded.
The site director immediately gathered the research team to assess the situation.
The analysis results were unsettling.
"What happened? Why is SCP-173's containment chamber so agitated?" The director looked toward the monitor, his fingers tapping lightly against the table.
Some situations not written into the rules—or even recorded in the files—could prove fatal to the site's containment efforts.
The secretary beside him organized the paper files and looked toward the monitor.
"At least it looks better than the situation with SCP-682, doesn't it?" the secretary said, adjusting his glasses.
The director flew into a rage. "What do you mean, better than SCP-682? Our site can't afford a second master! Are you hoping I'll get taken out by Headquarters so you can take my position?"
The secretary nodded expressionlessly. "Theoretically speaking, yes..."
The director immediately flicked the secretary on the forehead, making him clutch his head and say through teary eyes,
"I was only joking—was all."
No matter what, the two of them worked together with remarkable coordination to set the massive site in motion. One after the other, they quickly found an appropriate solution.
The emergency plan was activated at once.
It had to be transferred to a higher-grade sealed unit.
Before it breached the containment chamber, it had to be contained once more.
The Mobile Task Force (MTF) assembled rapidly.
As an elite unit that handled high-risk anomalies, their mission should have been foolproof. However, some researchers raised doubts.
"This behavior from SCP-173 has never been seen before. Shouldn't we first send in D-Class personnel to gather intelligence, then deploy our team afterward?"
The director rejected the proposal, but he still agreed to send in a team of D-Class personnel first to gather basic information.
The reason was that during a containment breach, it was no time to discuss losses.
Even the lives of task force members were far less important than keeping the entity inside its containment chamber.
Before the heavy steel door, which continued to sound alarms, an eerie and massive tearing noise came from within.
Screeech—
Screeech—
The sound of metal breaking continued without end.
Listening to the noise, the task force fully understood just how severe this mission was.
They had long since read SCP-173's file. This situation had never been recorded anywhere they could use as a reference.
"Remember your mission." The task force members pressed their gun barrels against the backs of three D-Class personnel dressed in orange prison uniforms.
But hearing the sounds from inside, the three D-Class personnel trembled all over and realized that some terrifying existence lurked within.
"Do we really... have to do this?"
"Am I going to die here?"
"Wah... sob, sob..." One of them could not hold back his sobbing. He had already realized what awaited him.
The task force members guarding the D-Class personnel remained silent.
If they did not do this, then the next ones to die would be them.
"Final warning. If you refuse to obey orders, I have the authority to execute you!" With that, the three task force members raised their guns and violently shoved the three men forward.
They slipped through the narrow gap in the door, and the space before them suddenly opened up.
Once the door closed and they realized there was no escape, the three could only accept their mission.
The concrete room was littered with signs of destruction, with some of the rebar exposed from the cement.
The concrete statue stopped moving after the three D-Class personnel entered.
The three D-Class personnel stared fixedly at SCP-173.
They did not dare relax in the slightest.
"H-Hey, I'm about to blink."
One of the men with messy, bird's-nest hair spoke up.
The other two stared at SCP-173 and answered.
"Hurry up!"
"My tears won't stop."
"Stop crying! As long as we keep looking at this damned statue, we won't die!"
The weeping D-Class personnel followed their movements and kept cooperating with them.
Cry for a while, or cry for the rest of his life.
He knew which one to choose.
That was right. As long as a three-person team maintained uninterrupted visual contact,
containing SCP-173 was supposed to be the simplest thing in the world.
Then, a terrifying sight appeared.
SCP-173 actually began moving slowly under their gaze. Maintaining the walking speed of an ordinary person, it crept toward the D-Class personnel, producing a harsh grinding sound as it moved.
"AAAAAHHH!"
"What is going on?!"
"I knew we were going to die! Sob, sob..."
The D-Class personnel who had already been crying now cried even harder.
The other two D-Class personnel were so frightened by the scene that tears began streaming down their faces as well.
They hurriedly backed into the corner of the room as though their lives depended on it, not daring to slack off for even a moment.
Clack, clack.
The concrete statue kept moving across the floor, gouging cracks of varying sizes into the walls through friction.
SCP-173 continued moving even under observation, inching toward the three D-Class personnel.
This anomaly instantly caught the site director's attention, and he immediately issued an urgent order.
A cold voice sounded through the containment chamber's broadcast system.
"You need to keep moving while maintaining uninterrupted visual contact. Hold out for two hours."
The panicked D-Class personnel were instantly overjoyed. It would be over in just two hours!
