Background

Zhou Yan is a direct-line heir of the Purple Palace Zhou Family, one of the Profound Heaven Sect's three great clans. As the junior most favored by a major figure of his family, his status exceeds that of ordinary sect elders and stewards. 30

He initially regarded Shen Qingzhou as a potential Dao Ginseng: a gifted cultivator cultivated until their foundation was complete, then harvested to aid another's Dao foundation. Although the Zhou Family elders wished for Shen to be harvested, Zhou Yan was reluctant to use him for that purpose and chose to let him develop under Cloud Hermit's protection. He considered Shen potentially more useful as someone who could help perfect his Intent. 30

After learning that Shen had reached Qi Refining Eighth Layer, Zhou Yan reassessed him as a talent too valuable to treat as a disposable resource. He ordered Wang Jing to reveal the Zhou Family's role in manufacturing Shen's Heaven-Born Kan-Water Fate and present him with the choice of eventual harvesting or service to the family. 54

Zhou Yan later personally negotiated with Shen in Soaring Firmament Blessed Land. He acknowledged the Zhou Family's manipulation of Shen's fate, but argued that Shen's rise above the other recipients of that fortune proved his individual worth. Their agreement made Shen a Zhou Family ally: Shen would rise through the Dao Foundation Seed Ranking and assist the family in the grand competition, while Zhou Yan would provide resources, scripture access, and talisman materials. 58 59

Unlike family elders who view gifted outsiders as material to be harvested, Zhou Yan takes a longer view. He recognizes the strategic value of reviving the Kan Water Lineage and accepts Shen's pledge precisely because Shen is willing to make enemies rather than remain neutral between the great families. 67

After Shen cripples Liu Yingying and defies Sun Lie's faction at Listening Waves Retreat, Zhou Yan accepts his pledge of allegiance. He considers Shen's willingness to offend rival families necessary for a true ally and dispatches Zhou Xuan to prevent elder-level retaliation. 67 68

Langhuan Blessed Land Crisis

As a leading grand-competition participant, Zhou Yan enters Langhuan Blessed Land seeking its inheritance. When the merfolk queen Qingyi's forces overwhelm the Zhou Family disciples, he joins Qin Bufan and Shen Qingzhou in resisting the assault. 79

After Sun Ming appears and overturns the battle, Zhou Yan provides the Spatial Shift Talisman and helps execute the desperate escape. The effort drains most of his spiritual power, but the three successfully reach the Profound Abyss Platform. 80

Earth Spirit's Inheritance

Following the awakening of Langhuan Blessed Land's Earth Spirit, Zhou Yan receives guidance to perfect his Dao practice and a growable magical artifact.
