Background / History

Zhang Wuji is the grand-disciple of Wudang patriarch Zhang Sanfeng and the son of Zhang Cuishan. His mother is Yin Susu, making him the grandson of the White-Browed Eagle King Yin Tianzheng; he is also the godson of the Golden-Haired Lion King Xie Xun. 21 24

Before Zu Hao meets him at the Han River, Zhang Wuji is struck by the Xuanming Divine Palm. Its cold poison penetrates his internal organs, leaving him pale, weak, and frequently wracked by pain. 21 22 25 Zhang Sanfeng searches for treatment and eventually entrusts Wuji to Zu Hao and Chang Yuchun near Butterfly Valley. 22 24

Hu Qingniu agrees to treat him after learning of his Ming Cult ties. Acupuncture, medicinal baths, and decoctions temporarily suppress the poison, but cannot fully remove it. 24 25 Wuji remains in Butterfly Valley with Zu Hao, studies medicine, and helps treat injured visitors. 25 26

Zu Hao later shares the Nine Yin Manual and Dragon-Subduing Eighteen Palms with Wuji and the other children. 29 Wuji travels with Zu Hao through the famine-stricken countryside and toward Kunlun, where he is trained, protected, and forced to confront the violence of the martial world. 30 34 35

After Zu Hao obtains the Nine Yang Manual, he gives its four volumes to Wuji as the means to cure the Xuanming cold poison and establish his future cultivation. Wuji exchanges the Seven Damage Fist manual in return. 42 Zu Hao eventually escorts him to the foot of Wudang Mountain, warns him about Song Qingshu and Cheng Kun, and entrusts him with Yang Dingtian's letter before they part. 43

Zhang Wuji is a young boy whose illness initially leaves him visibly frail and exhausted. Despite this, Zu Hao observes a trace of heroic spirit between his brows. 21

Personality

Zhang Wuji is kind, honest, and compassionate. He readily helps Hu Qingniu and Zu Hao treat injured martial artists despite Hu Qingniu's rule against treating outsiders. 26 His compassion also makes him deeply disturbed by the famine victims he encounters, as he cannot bear to watch others die. 31

His kindness is tempered by inexperience. Zu Hao repeatedly teaches him that the martial world contains deception, violence, and moral dilemmas that cannot always be solved through good intentions alone. 31 32 Though frightened and hesitant when first ordered to kill bandits, Wuji ultimately acts and begins adapting to the dangers around him. 34

He is also resolute under suffering. Despite the painful treatment required to suppress his cold poison, he insists that he can endure it. 25

Wuji is introduced during Zhang Sanfeng's confrontation with Yuan soldiers and Tibetan monks at the Han River. His worsening cold poison becomes the reason Zu Hao joins Zhang Sanfeng's group and seeks the Nine Yang Manual. 21 22

At Butterfly Valley, Hu Qingniu accepts him as connected to the Ming Cult and begins treating his condition. Wuji studies medicine and assists with the wounded while the cold poison is temporarily contained. 24 25 26

Journey to Kunlun

Wuji joins Zu Hao, Zhou Zhiruo, Yin Li, and Yang Buhui on the journey west. He witnesses the famine's brutality, narrowly avoids poison at a roadside tea stall, and is taught to be wary of hidden malice. 30 31 32

At Black Mountain Stronghold, Zu Hao forces Wuji to kill bandits for the first time. Wuji initially hesitates, but kills two men after gathering his courage. 34

Nine Yang Manual and Return to Wudang

After Zu Hao finds the Nine Yang Manual in the White Ape's hidden bundle, he gives it to Wuji and receives the Seven Damage Fist manual in exchange. 41 42

Zu Hao then takes Wuji to Wudang Mountain, warns him of threats from Song Qingshu and Cheng Kun, and gives him Yang Dingtian's letter before leaving him to continue his life within Wudang. 43
