The car doors slowly opened, smoke swirling inside and obscuring the view.
The next second, countless bullets poured forth like a torrential storm, weaving into an impenetrable net of fire.
The bullets struck the carriage walls, scattering fine metal fragments and sparks with sharp clanging sounds that made their eardrums ache.
The special forces members held down their triggers, emptying their ammunition in an attempt to turn the enemy into a hornet's nest through sheer firepower.
Their colleagues on the ground had been wiped out far too quickly. The pressure on them was immense, and they had no desire to face an unknown, powerful enemy. Whatever you had to say, say it to my firepower.
As the gunfire gradually died out, one special forces member finally shouldered a rocket launcher and fired into the carriage. The rocket screamed into the train, and the blast wave scattered the smoke while the heavy carriage was torn apart by the tremendous force.
After the dust settled, the commander gestured, and four special forces members reluctantly approached the carriage with their guns raised, carefully inspecting the interior.
There was nothing inside. Aside from bullet casings scattered across the floor and what appeared to be the remains of smoke grenades, the four men saw none of the bloodbath they had expected.
Where had the enemy gone?
Clang~~~ Clang~~~ Clang~~~
Two grenades flew out from the front and rear of the carriage, rolling straight into the middle of the crowd. The special forces members lowered their heads and stared, their gazes following the grenades like cats watching a ball of yarn.
"G! R! E! N! A! D! E!"
Someone shouted, and the crowd scattered in an instant, running in every direction to find cover from the shrapnel—but it was already too late.
Two deafening explosions erupted almost simultaneously, and sharp fragments swept through the crowd like invisible blades.
Screams rose one after another. The special forces members closest to the blasts fell silent instantly, their bodies blocking most of the shrapnel. Those farther out were thrown to the ground by the shockwave, their ears ringing and their vision going dark.
After two bloody flowers of flesh exploded, Xiao Miao and Alice crawled out from beneath the front and rear of the carriage, continuously firing into the crowd.
The deafened and blinded special forces members dropped one after another, utterly unable to organize any effective resistance as they were picked off one by one.
Two men managed to escape behind cover, only to be sent to hell by two bullets from Xiao Miao the instant they leaned out to fire.
Clatter, clatter, clatter~~~
The hot shell casings rolled across the ground. As the echoes of gunfire faded, the platform fell completely silent.
"Why were they all standing together and blocking the door? Did they think the two of us would just swagger out of the carriage?"
Xiao Miao looked at the corpses by his feet, deeply puzzled. Was he actually the protagonist of some webnovel, with an intelligence-reducing aura around him?
Alice shrugged. "How would I know? Back when I was in the Hive, I already thought Umbrella Corporation's special forces weren't very smart."
Xiao Miao nodded in agreement. He had noticed it when he watched the movies in his previous life. These guys, armed to the teeth, often pulled off baffling moves that made people's blood pressure spike.
The two put on the gas masks they had prepared beforehand, blew open the main entrance, and stormed into the base. Scattered resistance could not stop a master marksman and a T-virus test subject. The first two floors of the base quickly fell to them.
The steel door to the third floor stood wide open in a completely defenseless posture, but neither Xiao Miao nor Alice acted rashly, because a laser corridor lay right before them.
Boom!!! Boom!!!
Xiao Miao immediately turned into a demolition maniac. After two explosions, the laser corridor was completely clear.
After passing through the corridor and reaching the main hall, they found dozens of researchers in white lab coats hiding there. Upon seeing Xiao Miao and Alice, many trembled like sieves and did not dare lift their heads. Some even knelt on the floor and repeatedly kowtowed, begging the two to spare them.
Alice looked at Xiao Miao. Faced with such a situation, she did not know what to do either.
Xiao Miao holstered his pistols beneath his arms.
Seeing his movement, the researchers immediately beamed with joy, thinking he would not kill noncombatants. But then they saw Xiao Miao pull an assault rifle from behind his back and chamber a round.
The researchers' newly formed smiles froze instantly.
Ratatatat! Ratatatat!
When the magazine was empty, every researcher in the hall lay in a pool of blood. Xiao Miao reloaded expressionlessly, as if he had merely slaughtered a few dozen pigs.
What these people had done was a modern-day Unit 731. Even being cut into a thousand pieces would not be enough punishment. This had nothing to do with nationality—they had already placed themselves against humanity.
Alice leaned over the central control computer and tapped away at the keyboard, activating the virus deactivation process. Xiao Miao waited for a while, but he still did not hear any notification that the mission had been completed.
I killed them and neutralized the virus. Doesn't that count as completing the mission?
Suddenly, Xiao Miao's ears twitched. He faintly heard the roar of an engine. He exchanged a glance with Alice, then quickly followed the sound through two isolation doors and arrived in a broad tunnel carved upward at an angle.
A military Hummer was speeding away through the tunnel!
There was no need to think about it. The person in the vehicle had to be the base commander. Xiao Miao had a feeling that killing him would complete the mission!
"After him!"
A row of military Hummers stood at the tunnel entrance, and the keys had even been thoughtfully left in them. Xiao Miao and Alice jumped inside one, started the engine, and shot forward like an arrow leaving the bow.
Inside the vehicle ahead, Dr. Isaac repeatedly glanced at the rearview mirror. Seeing the enemies pursuing him relentlessly, he gnashed his teeth, his face twisted with fury.
"Trash. A bunch of trash. They were breached that quickly..."
The raid had come far too suddenly. Dr. Isaac had not anticipated anything like this at all.
Moreover, his guards had been defeated at an unimaginable speed, leaving him no time to arrange any countermeasures. He could only flee in panic.
"Die!"
After the Hummer passed a certain point in the tunnel, Isaac pressed several keys on the miniature computer he carried. Machinery rumbled within the tunnel walls, then openings split open in the inner walls as four Lickers slowly crawled into the tunnel.
The Dead Body Virus, specially modified for infection speed, spread and proliferated wildly throughout Tokonosu City. Wave after wave of howls completely tore apart the darkest hour before dawn.
Night was the Dead Bodies' domain. Humanity had become prey. Beneath a streetlamp, a woman heading to work early desperately swung her umbrella before a group of Dead Bodies mercilessly pounced on her and knocked her to the ground.
Chewing sounds rose as the woman's heart-wrenching screams drew even more Dead Bodies over. The ravenous feast lasted less than a minute before the Dead Bodies released her and dispersed, because she had become one of them.
A twisted, mangled private car lay across the middle of the road, blocking the path of a relatively intact bus. More than a dozen people on the bus witnessed the tragedy with their own eyes, clamping their hands over their mouths and not daring to make a sound.
Only after the Dead Bodies gathered around the woman had dispersed did everyone dare breathe deeply again. Some clutched their heads and broke down, some called for help, some discussed countermeasures, and some rubbed their hands together with excited expressions.
The people on the bus came from all walks of life: office workers, delinquent teenagers, couples on secret dates, and Saeko Busujima, who was alone. Together, they formed a survival group aboard the bus.
Saeko Busujima quietly swallowed, suppressing the bloodthirsty urge to unleash violence in her heart. She silently listened to the discussion, evaluating who among them would be a worthwhile companion for escape.
After hearing Xiao Miao's words, she had originally intended to fly directly to the United States to find her father. But sorting through her mother's belongings delayed her for some time. When she left home again, the Dead Body outbreak had begun, forcing her to flee onto the bus for shelter.
The group quickly settled on a plan: first clear out the Dead Bodies near the bus. Saeko Busujima volunteered to join the cleanup team, and her overwhelming strength left everyone dumbfounded. The delinquent teenagers who had harbored improper thoughts about her immediately became much more well-behaved.
But Saeko Busujima was still only human, and intense combat drained her stamina rapidly. She wanted to retreat to the bus to rest, only to be morally pressured by those who had stayed behind.
"You're so strong, so you should protect us!"
"Who are you trying to fool? Hurry up and kill the Dead Bodies—they're coming over here."
"Are you trying to slack off?"
"Such huge boobs. Disgusting. Why don't you just die?"
Seeing this, several delinquent teenagers felt their suppressed thoughts stir again. The untouchable beauty's body was drenched in sweat, her graceful curves displaying all her feminine charm, and the air around her was thick with the scent of hormones.
Their lower heads took control of their upper heads. The delinquents realized this was the perfect time to make their move. The surrounding Dead Bodies had mostly been cleared out anyway, so they had plenty of time to have some fun first.
Saeko Busujima's expression darkened. Realizing something was wrong, she immediately backed away. A fierce glint flashed in her eyes as she considered how to take one of them down first.
The delinquent teenagers grinned lewdly as they closed in, their intentions obvious.
Suddenly, the vibrations of a roaring engine came from nearby. Everyone turned toward the sound and saw an ordinary rolling shutter door at the roadside automatically rise, revealing a hidden tunnel exit.
The roar grew closer and closer. Then a Hummer shot out of the tunnel and, under everyone's terrified gazes, slammed straight into the bus in the middle of the road.
