Gwen Stacy reminded Li Wei about the Osborn Group's gala, which had drawn invitations to many of New York's prominent figures.
For Norman Osborn, it was a chance to show his determination to run for office—and to attract sponsors.
To draw attention, Norman Osborn had prepared a treasure for the occasion: an extremely valuable necklace.
"The Osborn Group invited Dr. Otto too."
"Dr. Otto?"
Li Wei nodded. Before leaving work, he went to see Dr. Otto.
"Otto."
Li Wei hugged the doctor, who was busy as ever.
Dr. Otto was a man of principle. Scientists like him pursued loftier ideals, unlike capitalists such as Norman Osborn.
Perhaps that was why the two had gone their separate ways.
Their lives had taken very different paths, too.
Norman Osborn had achieved enormous success.
Dr. Otto, meanwhile, remained poor. If Li Wei had not helped him, he might not even have had anyone willing to fund his laboratory.
That was why he had always been grateful to Li Wei.
Li Wei trusted him in return. Only a handful of them had access to the key technologies.
"The Osborn Group invited you to the gala."
After a little small talk, Li Wei brought it up.
As expected, Dr. Otto grew visibly uncomfortable.
"I turned them down for you," Li Wei said.
"Thank you."
Dr. Otto sighed. "I don't want to see Norman basking in the spotlight."
Li Wei smiled and patted his arm. "Otto, you're doing better than he is now. Who hasn't heard your name?"
That cheered Dr. Otto up. "I owe it all to you."
"No, no."
Li Wei shook his head. "I couldn't have come this far without you."
After a little mutual praise, Dr. Otto felt much better.
Success had a way of clearing obstacles.
