Background

Aberrant Beasts have existed since before human civilization in the Material Realm, but their origin is unknown. A popular but unproven theory claims that all Aberrant Beasts and their power originate from a single unnamed entity worshipped by Black Ash Dawn as the Beast Lord 146.

They can appear suddenly in human cities, where they indiscriminately kill and destroy. Conventional physical attacks, including powerful weapons, are ineffective against them 1.

Appearance

Aberrant Beasts have no fixed body plan. Their appearance varies sharply by rank, type, specialized organs, and evolutionary state 18.

• An example Looper Tier specimen stood over four meters tall, had two heads, dark-purple fur, green-tinted eyes, tubular structures across its body, and oversized claws 7.
• Dissolving Cavity Types are generally over ten meters tall, with mucus-covered bodies and a specialized cavity that fires bodily fluids as high-pressure blasts capable of piercing concrete 18.
• Pupa Stage Aberrant Beasts usually remain around or below twenty meters long; specimens approaching thirty meters are exceptional anomalies 364.
• Some artificial specimens are crude human–beast composites with little or no consciousness, making them weaker than even the lowest Egg Rank 134.

Behavior and Ecology

• Instinct-driven violence — Low-ranking Aberrant Beasts possess extremely limited intelligence. Their typical behavior is to kill living things they encounter and destroy their surroundings when no targets are present 8 117.
• Feeding — Their diet is all-encompassing and includes humans, Fairies, Magical Girls, and other Aberrant Beasts 16 146.
• Pupa-stage intelligence — Upon reaching Pupa Stage, they gain intelligence comparable to wild animals. They become more covert, evade Magical Girl and Bureau tracking, and hunt around their Nest 16.
• Parasitism and predation — Lower-ranked Aberrant Beasts may gather around a Pupa Stage Nest, but they are not necessarily its subordinates; the Pupa may simply consume them 16.
• Limited self-preservation — Even when critically harmed, low-intelligence specimens may continue attacking because they cannot understand the cause of their injuries or recognize danger until death is imminent 86 302.

Mana Physiology

Aberrant Beasts are creatures made of mana. Their Mana Source is comparable to a human heart: without it, an Aberrant Beast should be unable to survive 117.

• Defeated Aberrant Beasts normally leave behind an Echo, a collective term for their residual magic and soul fragments 9.
• Magical Girls can collect an Echo from a defeated specimen 9.
• An Echo-less Aberrant Beast encountered in Bai'an City defied established knowledge, as it appeared to function despite lacking a detectable Mana Source 117.

Resistance to Conventional Weapons

Physical attacks are generally unable to harm Aberrant Beasts effectively, rendering ordinary weapons insufficient against them 1.

• Even Mages at the Controller Stage are ordinarily unable to fight them in human form without specialized equipment 154.
• Magical Girl magic can injure them, while Magical Girl and Aberrant Beast mana inherently oppose and erode one another 168.

Specialized Organs

Egg Rank Aberrant Beasts develop organs that let them use mana in distinct ways, forming the basis for their classification 18.

• Eroding Claw Type — Claws corrode objects 18.
• Ruptured Skin Type — Mana flow beneath the skin produces an extremely hot body surface 18.

Nest Creation

A Nest is the defining ability of a Pupa Stage Aberrant Beast. It serves as both a protected base and a means of accumulating the mana and nutrients needed for further evolution 16 118.

• Nests warp and layer preexisting reality into spatial labyrinths 118.
• A Nest imitates and distorts its surrounding location rather than creating scenery from nothing 118.
• The Pupa that creates a Nest is protected by it, but is also effectively trapped once the Nest is discovered 16.
• Exceptional Nests can reproduce human spaces with unnerving accuracy, far beyond what ordinary Pupa-stage intelligence should permit 118.
• Some exceptional specimens can form temporary Nests from gathered slime during combat 301.

Pupa Shell

Pupa Stage Aberrant Beasts may develop a Pupa Shell while accumulating nutrients for higher evolution 28.

• The shell can dissolve or defend against attacks made purely of magic power 28.
• It can be broken through sustained magical bombardment beyond its endurance limit 28.
• Magic Constructs are especially effective because they are formed from a Magical Girl’s soul and magic as one, rather than functioning as purely magical attacks 28.

Rules

Nests of Half-Molts and higher can be governed by supernatural Rules, forcing Magical Girls to analyze and counter the Nest’s conditions rather than relying solely on force 357.

• Zhu’s spider-like Half-Molt generated Rule-based silk that could not be cut by ordinary magic or Larkspur’s Magic Armament; the silk restricted movement and slowed mana flow through the bound area 124.
• A later Half-Molt used a Rule connected to corrosion resistance and temporary Nest formation, nearly trapping Cornflower and Nina in corrosive slime 301 302.

Artificial Aberrant Beasts

Beast Viscera Transformations

Black Ash Dawn’s Beast Viscera can transform humans into Aberrant Beasts and grant them beast-like power 76 86.

• Transformation reduces the user’s lifespan and greatly diminishes their consciousness and judgment 86.
• The transformed retain heightened instinctive reactions, but become driven by destruction and killing rather than rational self-preservation 86.
• Zhu willingly transformed after merging with a spider Aberrant Beast, becoming a Half-Molt-class monster 123.

Human Experimentation

Black Ash Dawn has used its research to create and manipulate Aberrant Beasts through human experimentation 134 144.

• The organization can transform ordinary humans into crude, permanently beastified creatures without preserving their will 134.
• Moss cultivated Aberrant Beasts with mana obtained from Fairies, Magical Girls, and other beasts, concluding that all three were necessary for a “balanced diet” supporting accelerated growth 146.
