Background
The Black Ancient Book first appears after an analysis declares that every person on Douluo Continent is a transmigrator. Its first page asks, “When everyone knows the plot, who can still become the true protagonist?” 1
During Xu Zhou's Martial Soul Awakening, it manifests as a blank, black book and identifies itself as the Script of All Beings. Although Su Yuntao's crystal-ball test finds no Soul Power, the Book converts Su Yuntao's mistaken conclusion into Cognitive Bias, allowing Xu Zhou to reach level 1 in secret. 2
The Book establishes Xu Zhou's cultivation path: other people's genuine but incorrect beliefs about him are converted into Soul Power. As more people mistake his abilities for spatial powers, healing, Soul Beast communication, or mere record-checking, the Book repeatedly harvests their misjudgments. 3 7 17 19
At Nuoding Academy, it develops Proofreading after Xu Zhou exposes copied Ghost Vine attack reports. The ability becomes central to uncovering falsified Soul Beast records, altered permits, misleading maps, and sabotaged medicine during Tang San's Soul Ring hunt. 16 18 21 24 25
Appearance
The Black Ancient Book is a palm-sized, pitch-black volume that usually manifests in Xu Zhou's hand or consciousness. Its cover bears no title, while dark-golden patterns run along its edges. 1 2
- Its pages are initially blank following its awakening. 2
- It displays system messages in blood-red text and can copy examined records into ink-black text. 1 16
- Other people do not appear able to see the words displayed on its pages. 3
- Xu Zhou's official Martial Soul certificate records it simply as a Black Book with no innate Soul Power. 3
Abilities & Skills
Cognitive Bias Conversion
The Book detects when someone reaches an incorrect conclusion about Xu Zhou and converts that mistaken judgment into Soul Power.
- Su Yuntao's belief that Xu Zhou could never become a Soul Master provides the first collection and raises Xu Zhou from level 0 to level 1. 2
- Incorrect judgments from important figures produce substantially greater gains, as seen when Yu Xiaogang identifies the Book as a door. 4
- Repeated judgments of the same kind from the same person grant diminishing rewards. 3
- A statement must be sincerely believed to count; Xu Yan's deliberately exaggerated guess that Xu Zhou would reach level 99 produces no reaction. 4
- Correct judgments grant no reward. 5
Cognitive Reinforcement
The Book can provide temporary real-world support for a false public belief.
- Yu Xiaogang's sudden rise to level 33 and Luo Sanpao's third Soul Ring are described as evidence temporarily fabricated by the Book to reinforce the belief that Xu Zhou can grant others power. 7 8
- Luo Sanpao's Golden Gate temporarily serves as evidence for the public belief that Xu Zhou's Martial Soul possesses spatial attributes. 7
- The Book specifies that this supporting evidence disappears after twelve shichen. 7
Public Scripts
The Book can condense a collective false cognition into a Public Script with defined believers, conditions, rewards, and penalties.
- The belief that Xu Zhou could raise others' Soul Power forms a White-grade Public Script with 127 believers. 8
- That script required its believers to personally confirm that the ability was false; failure would randomly transfer one level of Xu Zhou's Soul Power. 8
- Once the village recognizes that Xu Zhou did not heal Tang Hao or raise Zhao Tiezhu's level, the script is overturned and completed. 11
- A later script, Burden of the Soul Hunting Forest, requires Xu Zhou to leave the forest safely within three days after hundreds bet that he would only hinder the group. 22
- Its final condition changes to leading the entire team out alive after the Captive-Breeding Ground incident. 26
Script Projection
Script Projection is the reward gained from completing the first Public Script.
- It selects an already formed false belief and makes it real for a short period. 11
- The Book obtains one use after the villagers overturn their belief that Xu Zhou can help others advance their Soul Power. 11
Proofreading
Proofreading compares material Xu Zhou has read and highlights obvious contradictions; it does not determine whether an individual statement is true.
- It first appears after the Book compares twenty-one copied Ghost Vine attack reports and identifies them as same-source erroneous text. 16
- It exposes contradictions in rain-soaked Ghost Vine reports, Soul Beast procurement ledgers, herb-garden records, forest-entry permits, maps, and Captive-Breeding Ground registration records. 17 18 21 24 26
- It can identify inconsistencies between a medicine label, academy supply formula, and actual residue in tampered Snake-Repelling Powder. 25
- It cannot detect a coordinated lie when every available record agrees; Xu Zhou's awakening and retest records all consistently label him incapable of cultivation, leaving the Book unresponsive. 19
- It recognizes a twenty-three-year-old file involving another student whose zero Soul Power record contradicted his later status as a level-12 Soul Master, locating related files in the Academy Sealed Archive. 20
Relationships
- Xu Zhou — Host and sole known wielder. The Book supplies him with prompts, abilities, missions, and Soul Power gained from others' mistaken beliefs. 2 3
- Yu Xiaogang — His repeated but incorrect Spatial Gate theories generate major Cognitive Bias rewards and help establish public misconceptions about the Book's spatial nature. 4 5 7
- Tang San — Tang San mistakes the Book for a Spatial Gate connected to another world; the Book collects the resulting Cognitive Bias while Xu Zhou allows the misunderstanding to continue. 6
- Nuoding Academy staff — Their belief that the Book is only useful for auditing records generates further Cognitive Bias while also gives Xu Zhou access to academy archives. 19 20
- Collective believers — Villagers, gamblers, students, and other transmigrators serve as the basis for the Book's Public Scripts through shared false beliefs about Xu Zhou. 8 22
