Personality

Yan is competitive, direct, and initially focused almost entirely on combat strength. When he first sees Eevee, his immediate questions concern whether it is strong and whether it can fight him; his first proposed care schedule leaves virtually no meaningful time for a partner. 5

He is persistent rather than easily discouraged. After being refused entry to the encounter process, he repeatedly revises his schedule until he can honestly make room for rest and companionship. 5 10 12

His partnership with Magby brings out his patience and responsibility. Yan teaches Magby to control its fire, accepts shared responsibility when they damage equipment, follows safety rules on their first walk, and later cancels training to let Magby recover from exhaustion. 13 14 40 41

Eevee Application

Yan enters the Pokémon Shop after seeing Hu Liena with Eevee and immediately seeks a partner of his own. His application is rejected because his schedule prioritizes training over eating, drinking, rest, and companionship. 5

He continues revising the schedule, but Metagross discovers that he has concealed a clause allowing him to make up missed training. Yan is finally approved only after submitting a schedule with genuine evening time and no hidden conditions. 10 12

Meeting Magby

Yan's selection leads him to the Fireproof Encounter Room, where he meets Magby hiding beneath a metal basin. The two test one another through a Berry-roasting fire-control game. 12 13

Their first attempts are clumsy: they burn fruit, overheat the room, scorch the training mat, and must clean the tray together. Yan teaches Magby to warm the wash water without overheating it, establishing their first cooperative rhythm. 13

Establishing Companionship

Yan and Magby return the next day to complete a three-tray Berry challenge. They learn to combine low, controlled flames, identify uneven heating, and share responsibility for a half-burned slice. 14

After a safe walk to the bakery, Yan asks whether Magby still wants to travel with him. Magby agrees, selects an ordinary Poké Ball, and formally becomes Yan's partner. 15
