Background
Dugu Bo inherited the Jade Phosphor Serpent Emperor Martial Soul, which gave him formidable poison arts but also afflicted him with recurring, heart-devouring poison backlash. The same poison caused the deaths of his son and daughter-in-law, leaving Dugu Yan as his only remaining family. He fears that she will eventually suffer the same fate. 26
He discovered and occupied a hidden valley in Sunset Forest containing the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and a vast collection of rare herbs. Although he recognized the location's danger, he could not identify or safely use many of its immortal herbs. 26 28 29

His devotion to Dugu Yan governs nearly every major decision he makes. He accepts Spirit Hall's terms to secure her cure, training, and future potential, but refuses to become a conventional spy within Heaven Dou because of his conscience and his long friendship with Prince Xue Xing. 32 33 36

Qian Renxue's leap into the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well traps Dugu Bo in a three-day standoff with her guardians. Qianjun initially holds him responsible because the valley, its plants, and the spring are all under his control; Dugu Bo's principal concern remains getting Dugu Yan away from the danger. 29 30
Spirit Hall Compact
After claiming the valley as an opportunity belonging to Qian Renxue, Spirit Hall demands Dugu Bo's loyalty. He rejects the implication that he should betray Heaven Dou, but becomes willing to negotiate once Qian Renxue reveals that she can cure both his and Dugu Yan's inherited poison. 32
Dugu Bo chooses to delay Dugu Yan's cure until her martial soul awakens, accepting Qian Renxue's condition that she cultivate by the Holy Maiden's side. The arrangement preserves Dugu Yan's potential and includes Qian Renxue's promise that she can reach the Title Douluo realm. 33 34
