Background

Tang Chen was born into the impoverished Clear Sky Tang Clan, before it had become the Clear Sky Sect. At age six, he awakened a crude Clear Sky Hammer with Innate Full Soul Power. He trained as a blacksmith in his youth, and at age ten applied blacksmithing’s principle of borrowing force to Soul Power circulation during a near-fatal hunt. This produced the Ringing Wind Hammer Technique. 47 48

At thirty-five, Tang Chen became a Title Douluo. When Spirit Hall attempted to recruit and suppress him, he stormed Spirit City alone. Cornered by several Title Douluo and unable to overcome the Six-Winged Angel through ordinary Soul Skills, he reverse-stripped and compressed the power of his Soul Rings into a single strike. This created the Grand Sumeru Hammer and Ring Detonation. 48

His rise transformed the Clear Sky Tang Clan into the Clear Sky Sect. Tang Chen created the Clear Sky Manual, brought the sect to the rank of the continent’s foremost sect, and became a Rank 99 Limit Douluo. Together with Qian Daoliu and Bo Saixi, he was recognized as one of the three Limit Douluos standing at the pinnacle of the Spirit Master world. Tang Chen was fiercely self-reliant. He built his power and his sect’s legacy through invention, hardship, and repeated life-or-death gambles rather than inherited guidance. His willingness to shatter his own Soul Rings to survive Spirit Hall’s encirclement defined both his ingenuity and his refusal to retreat. 47 48

He was direct, boisterous, and emotionally blunt. Rather than Qian Daoliu’s formal courtship, he openly told Bo Saixi that he liked her. Her condition that she would love whoever first reached Level 100 became the driving force behind his pursuit of godhood. 50 65

His greatest strength—an absolute refusal to yield—also became his fatal flaw. Despite his pride, Tang Chen could acknowledge emotional complexity and shared responsibility. He told Tang Hao that he would likewise choose Bo Saixi over his own father, but could not disregard the loss of his son, Tang Tian. He treated Ah Yin as a member of the Tang family regardless of her Soul Beast origins. This protectiveness, combined with his domineering belief that the family should take what it needed, led him to support seizing the Azure Sea Silver Emperor's origin. Seven Great Sects Ranking Tournament

Sixty years before the present, Tang Chen arrived at Falling Star Valley as a Rank 99 Limit Douluo and immediately ended the confrontation between Spirit Hall and the Upper Three Sects. By releasing his rings and gravity domain, he forced Majestic Lion Douluo and Spirit Hall to acknowledge the Clear Sky Sect as the continent’s number one sect without an actual match taking place. 28 29 30

The historical projection also began awakening his suppressed identity in Slaughter City. Seeing himself with the Clear Sky Hammer prompted him to remember Bo Saixi, regret the sect's decline, and struggle against the Bat King's control. 29 30

Slaughter City and Possession

After fifteen years fruitlessly searching for a route to godhood, Tang Chen entered Slaughter City. He passed its hundred-match requirement and Hell Road, then began Asura’s Nine Trials. During the eighth trial, his urgency to return to Bo Saixi and Rakshasa’s interference caused a cultivation deviation; the Blood-Red Nine-Headed Bat King then possessed him for decades. 51 52

His search had taken him through ancient ruins, tombs, and forgotten sites without finding a divine inheritance. In Slaughter City, he remained sober and refused Yellow Springs Dew, overcoming the arena through the Clear Sky Hammer's raw force despite the suppression of Soul Skills. 51 52

Ranking Screen Revival

The Ranking Screen revealed Tang Chen’s life and reawakened his suppressed consciousness. Memories of Bo Saixi allowed him to reject the Killing King identity, expel the Bat King, and reclaim his body. The Screen then reconstructed his body and evolved his Martial Soul into the Asura Sword. 51 53

He was announced as fourth among the Ten Peak Soul Masters while still possessed and severely impaired. His restoration led the Clear Sky Sect to prepare to welcome him home and alarmed Spirit Hall, whose leaders feared that his new Martial Soul had moved him beyond Qian Daoliu's strength. In the God Realm, his recovery renewed Asura God's claim to him and attracted the God of Destruction's interest. 47 53 54

Reunion with Bo Saixi

After leaving Slaughter City, Tang Chen traveled across the sea on the Asura Sword to reunite with Bo Saixi. Though he had returned as a Demigod, he admitted that he had only reached the threshold of true godhood. 90 91 92

Bo Saixi's earlier clarification of her feelings had made him realize that his vow arose from misunderstanding her intentions. After their reunion, they discussed Lan Yu's temporary stewardship of Sea God Island. Tang Chen accepted that Lan Yu was stronger than him, but declared that he would still fight him if he supported Qian Daoliu. 65 92

He remained on Sea God Island rather than immediately returning to the Clear Sky Sect, explaining that he wanted its elders to finish addressing their grievances first. Conflict with Lan Yu and Death

Tang Chen joined Tang Hao and Ah Yin in seeking part of the Azure Sea Silver Emperor’s origin. When Lan Yu intervened, Tang Chen challenged him despite the vast disparity in power. His full nine-ring detonation failed to breach the Sea God Seal; Lan Yu stripped his Asura Divinity, reduced him to Rank 70, and later executed him with a single law-infused strike. 164 165 167 169

The confrontation followed Tang Chen's meeting with Tang Hao on the mainland coast. He accepted that he shared responsibility for Tang Tian's death and offered to personally bring Tang Hao back into the sect. While returning toward Sea God Island, Ah Yin detected the Azure Sea Silver Emperor's bloodline, and Tang Chen agreed to help obtain its origin. 161 162 163

Tang Chen injured the Azure Sea Silver Emperor and demanded thirty percent of her origin. Lan Yu intervened, explaining that taking this amount would damage the ocean's ecology as well as his subordinate's cultivation. After Tang Hao was killed, Bo Saixi arrived and begged for Tang Chen's remaining life, offering to bear punishment herself. Tang Chen rejected her help and demanded death rather than submission. Soul Interception and Netherworld Banishment

Asura God intercepted Tang Chen and Tang Hao's souls and brought them before the God Realm Committee. Tang Chen described how Lan Yu had crippled his cultivation, erased his life force, and dispersed a three-hundred-thousand-year heavenly tribulation, shocking the observing gods. 172 173

Their hope of revival ended when Asura God judged their ruined divine trials and lost usefulness unworthy of reconstructing their bodies. He banished both souls to the Netherworld and vowed to confront Lan Yu personally after the Ranking Screen's protection period ended. 172 173

Posthumous Collapse of the Clear Sky Sect

The Clear Sky Sect later received Spirit Hall's announcement that Tang Chen and Tang Hao had both been killed by the Blue Silver Sovereign. Tang Xiao and the elders reacted with grief, disbelief, and fear, as Tang Chen had remained their greatest source of protection and confidence. 238 239

Now a Level 100 Angel True God, Qian Daoliu attacked the sect under Lan Yu's orders. Tang Xiao invoked the old pact with Tang Chen, but Qian Daoliu dismissed it as an agreement sustained only by their former equality in strength. With Tang Chen dead, he demanded the sect's submission, Clear Sky Token, and secret inheritances under threat of annihilation. 238 239

The sect was subsequently confirmed destroyed, and Spirit Hall issued an extermination order against its surviving members and affiliated clans. The destruction of Tang Chen's institutional legacy also forced Tang San to conceal his Clear Sky Hammer and Tang surname to avoid the purge. 243 245
