Background
Tang Chen was born into the impoverished Clear Sky Tang Clan, before it had become the Clear Sky Sect. At age six, he awakened a crude Clear Sky Hammer with Innate Full Soul Power. He trained as a blacksmith in his youth, and at age ten applied blacksmithing’s principle of borrowing force to Soul Power circulation during a near-fatal hunt. This produced the Ringing Wind Hammer Technique. 47 48
At thirty-five, Tang Chen became a Title Douluo. When Wuhun Hall attempted to recruit and suppress him, he stormed Wuhun City alone. Cornered by several Title Douluo and unable to overcome the Six-Winged Angel through ordinary Soul Skills, he reverse-stripped and compressed the power of his Soul Rings into a single strike. This created the Grand Sumeru Hammer and Ring Detonation. 48
His rise transformed the Clear Sky Tang Clan into the Clear Sky Sect. Tang Chen created the Clear Sky Manual, brought the sect to the rank of the continent’s foremost sect, and became a Rank 99 Limit Douluo. His personal strength was so overwhelming that the sect’s weaker backbone did not prevent it from dominating its rivals. 28 47
Appearance
Tang Chen was a tall, powerfully built man with shoulder-length black hair and an imposing presence. In his prime, he carried the enormous black Clear Sky Hammer on his shoulder and exerted gravitational pressure strong enough to oppress the Soul Masters around him. 28
- His nine Soul Rings were two yellow, two purple, four black, and one hundred-thousand-year red ring. 30
- While possessed as the Killing King, he had blood-red eyes, scarlet bat wings, and a crazed expression. 47
- After the Ranking Screen restored him, he wielded the dark-red Asura Sword, marked by blood-red Asura patterns and divine killing intent. 53
Personality
Tang Chen was fiercely self-reliant. He built his power and his sect’s legacy through invention, hardship, and repeated life-or-death gambles rather than inherited guidance. His willingness to shatter his own Soul Rings to survive Wuhun Hall’s encirclement defined both his ingenuity and his refusal to retreat. 47 48
He was direct, boisterous, and emotionally blunt. Rather than Qian Daoliu’s formal courtship, he openly told Bo Saixi that he liked her. Her condition that she would love whoever first reached Level 100 became the driving force behind his pursuit of godhood. 50 65
His greatest strength—an absolute refusal to yield—also became his fatal flaw. Longing to return to Bo Saixi made him impatient during Asura’s trials, allowing Rakshasa’s interference and the Blood-Red Nine-Headed Bat King to exploit his inner demons. After recovering, he remained unable to accept inferiority before Lan Yu, ultimately sacrificing his cultivation in a hopeless challenge. 52 165 166
Abilities & Skills
Clear Sky Hammer
Tang Chen’s original Martial Soul was the Clear Sky Hammer, a weapon defined by overwhelming weight, force, and destructive power.
- Dominated Slaughter City without Soul Skills and without drinking Yellow Springs Dew. 52
- Its gravitational domain crushed nearby Soul Douluo until they could not stand. 30
- Was the foundation of his early dominance and the weapon through which he established the Clear Sky Sect. 28 47
Ringing Wind Hammer Technique
A self-created hammer technique derived from blacksmithing’s force-borrowing principles.
- Builds momentum through consecutive strikes and rebound force.
- Produces a storm of hammer afterimages capable of crushing opponents. 48
- Was created at age ten while facing a hundred-year Soul Beast alone. 48
Clear Sky Manual
Tang Chen independently created the Clear Sky Manual to strengthen the sect’s foundation. 28
- Became a defining inheritance of the Clear Sky Sect.
- Was later adapted by Tang Chen for use with the Asura Sword. 74
Grand Sumeru Hammer and Ring Detonation
Tang Chen’s ultimate self-created technique, born when he forcibly shattered his Soul Rings and concentrated their power into a single attack.
- Reverse-detonates Soul Rings for catastrophic burst power. 48
- Repelled several Wuhun Hall Title Douluo during his assault on Wuhun City. 48
- Can be adapted to the Asura Sword as Grand Sumeru, Asura Annihilation Slash. 165
- Carries extreme risk: detonating all nine rings exhausted Tang Chen’s foundation and left him defenseless after Lan Yu neutralized the attack. 165 166
Asura Divine Power and Asura’s Nine Trials
After conquering Hell Road, Tang Chen was chosen by Asura God and began Asura’s Nine Trials. 52
- Reached the eighth trial before his impatience and obsession with returning to Bo Saixi created an opening for corruption. 52
- His dormant Asura Divine Power later helped him destroy the Blood-Red Nine-Headed Bat King. 53
- The power required a body capable of enduring it; decades of parasitism initially left his body near collapse. 53
- Lan Yu ultimately extracted and devoured his Asura Divinity and Divine Power. 167
Asura Sword
The Ranking Screen evolved Tang Chen’s Clear Sky Hammer into the God-Rank Asura Sword. 53
- Raised him back to the Demigod realm after his physical reconstruction. 53
- Channels slaughter intent and Asura Sword Intent into blood-red sword radiance. 165
- Could not realize its full potential through Tang Chen’s mortal body against Lan Yu’s Sea God Seal. 165

- Tang Hao — Grandson. Tang Chen acknowledged that Tang Hao’s actions contributed to Tang Tian’s death but also accepted his own responsibility for abandoning the sect; he offered to restore Tang Hao’s place in the Clear Sky Sect. 162
- Tang San — Great-grandson. Tang San drew inspiration from Tang Chen’s legacy and resolved to restore the honor of the Clear Sky Hammer. 29 48
- Tang Tian — Son. Tang Chen held Tang Hao partly responsible for Tang Tian’s death, while admitting that his own pursuit of godhood had left the sect without support. 162
- Tang Xiao — Descendant and Clear Sky Sect Master. Tang Xiao sought to rescue Tang Chen upon learning he was alive in Slaughter City. 47 48

- Blood-Red Nine-Headed Bat King — Parasite that possessed Tang Chen for decades and turned him into the Killing King. Tang Chen ultimately annihilated it after reclaiming his will. 47 53
- Lan Yu — Final adversary. Tang Chen challenged him over the Azure Sea Silver Emperor’s origin, lost decisively, had his divinity stripped, and was executed after refusing to submit. 164 167 169
- Ah Yin — Tang Chen’s granddaughter-in-law. He initially agreed to help restore her bloodline, leading directly to the confrontation with Lan Yu. 163 164
Story Role / Major Arcs
Seven Great Sects Ranking Tournament
Sixty years before the present, Tang Chen arrived at Falling Star Valley as a Rank 99 Limit Douluo and immediately ended the confrontation between Wuhun Hall and the Upper Three Sects. By releasing his rings and gravity domain, he forced Male Lion Douluo and Wuhun Hall to acknowledge the Clear Sky Sect as the continent’s number one sect without an actual match taking place. 28 29 30
Slaughter City and Possession
After fifteen years fruitlessly searching for a route to godhood, Tang Chen entered Slaughter City. He passed its hundred-match requirement and Hell Road, then began Asura’s Nine Trials. During the eighth trial, his urgency to return to Bo Saixi and Rakshasa’s interference caused a cultivation deviation; the Blood-Red Nine-Headed Bat King then possessed him for decades. 51 52
Ranking Screen Revival
The Ranking Screen revealed Tang Chen’s life and reawakened his suppressed consciousness. Memories of Bo Saixi allowed him to reject the Killing King identity, expel the Bat King, and reclaim his body. The Screen then reconstructed his body and evolved his Martial Soul into the Asura Sword. 51 53
Reunion with Bo Saixi
After leaving Slaughter City, Tang Chen traveled across the sea on the Asura Sword to reunite with Bo Saixi. Though he had returned as a Demigod, he admitted that he had only reached the threshold of true godhood. 90 91 92
Conflict with Lan Yu and Death
Tang Chen joined Tang Hao and Ah Yin in seeking part of the Azure Sea Silver Emperor’s origin. When Lan Yu intervened, Tang Chen challenged him despite the vast disparity in power. His full nine-ring detonation failed to breach the Sea God Seal; Lan Yu stripped his Asura Divinity, reduced him to Rank 70, and later executed him with a single law-infused strike. 164 165 167 169
Notable Quotes

Trivia
- Tang Chen’s only acknowledged loss in his invincible era was his wager with Bo Saixi. 48
- His Rank 99 pressure alone secured the Clear Sky Sect’s first-place position in the historical sect tournament. 29 30
- Although he was killed in the lower realm, Asura God intercepted his soul before it fully departed, only to judge him a failed inheritor and send him to the Netherworld. 173
