Background / History
Yue Qingshan was once one of Heavy Earth Gate’s foremost martial artists. Known across Skycloud Prefecture as the “Spear-and-Staff Mastery,” he brought Bedrock Court to first place in the Three-Courtyard Tournament for several consecutive years. His spear and staff arts were considered divine, while his body-tempering cultivation was exceptional. He also trained his daughter, Yue Wuxue, who ultimately surpassed him and overshadowed her contemporaries. 91
His family was shattered after Yue Wuxue and Miao Lingfeng had Miao Yue’er. Miao Lingfeng, secretly the prime minister’s son and the Ninth Princess’s betrothed, was forced to leave his family. The Ninth Princess implanted Extreme Cold Force into Miao Yue’er, crippling her cultivation and causing her to faint whenever she circulated too much true qi. Yue Wuxue disappeared while seeking Miao Lingfeng, leaving Yue Qingshan to care for their daughter. 83 84
After Heavy Earth Gate could not intervene against the imperial family, Yue Qingshan withdrew from teaching and resumed command of the declining Bedrock Court. He allowed the court to fall behind its rivals while he devoted himself to Miao Yue’er and searched for ways to suppress her cold qi. 91 100
During Heavy Earth Gate’s disciple selection, Yue Qingshan selected Zhou Muyun over the better-supported Qin Heng because Zhou’s poverty meant he could “endure hardship”—and because Yue Qingshan needed someone to tend his garden. 66 He tested Zhou by ordering him to reclaim a courtyard containing Black Tortoise Stone with a four-thousand-jin hoe. Zhou completed the task in three days, earning Yue Qingshan’s recognition. 68 70
Yue Qingshan subsequently directed Zhou toward the Seven-Treasure Glazed Body and Demon Ape World-Quelling Staff, rewarded him with cultivation resources for tending Red Vein Grass, and privately taught him after Zhou won the Three-Courtyard Tournament. 71 75 92
Appearance
Yue Qingshan usually presents himself as an elderly farmer rather than a renowned martial artist. He often tends Bedrock Court’s vegetable plots in coarse linen clothing, with his trouser legs rolled up and a hoe over his shoulder. 66
- Clouded eyes that can become sharply intimidating when he releases his pressure. 67
- Frequently rests in a reclining chair with his eyes closed. 71
- Can shed his decrepit appearance entirely when teaching or fighting, appearing sharp-eyed and vigorous in dark clothing. 92
- Carries a four-thousand-jin hoe as casually as an ordinary farming tool. 68
Personality
Yue Qingshan is eccentric, terse, and deliberately difficult to read. He appears to treat disciple recruitment as a way to find farm labor, calls Zhou Muyun a “foolish brat,” and claims his harsh tests are merely for amusement. 66 70 72 His seemingly idle behavior conceals a precise assessment of perseverance, loyalty, and character.
As a teacher, he is exacting and merciless in criticism. He repeatedly corrects Zhou’s staff forms, rejects brute-force technique, and emphasizes that martial intent must be personally comprehended rather than copied. 92 Despite this severity, he provides valuable resources, secret guidance, and direct protection to those he accepts. 71 83
His greatest vulnerability is Miao Yue’er. Yue Qingshan’s affection for his granddaughter, grief over his missing daughter, and hatred of the injustice done to their family shape nearly all of his decisions. 83 84 He also proves fiercely protective of Zhou Muyun once the latter earns his trust, personally intervening against assassins and forcing Forget-Worry Valley to withdraw its contract on him. 83 99
Abilities & Skills
True Essence Realm Cultivation
Yue Qingshan has advanced to the True Essence Realm, placing him above Late True Astral Realm martial artists. His breakthrough was revealed when he confronted Long Qi of Forget-Worry Valley. 99
- Easily killed a Pill Embrace Realm assassin with a single finger strike after catching the assassin’s sword between two fingers. 83
- Defeated Long Qi, a Late True Astral Realm expert, and crippled half of his body with a casual pat. 99
- Uses earth-yellow True Astral Force in combat. 83
- His mere gaze can freeze Zhou Muyun’s qi and blood, nearly forcing him to his knees. 67
Spear and Staff Mastery
Yue Qingshan’s famed spear and staff arts earned him the title “Spear-and-Staff Mastery.” 91
- Uses the Demon Ape World-Quelling Staff and has comprehended the Raging Ape Intent. 92
- Defeated Zhou Muyun in a bamboo-staff duel without moving from his position, overwhelming him through Staff Intent alone. 86
- Teaches that momentum is the foundation of martial intent and that true mastery lies beyond perfected forms. 92
- His Raging Ape Intent embodies a direct, fearless will to fight any opponent. 92
Body Tempering
Yue Qingshan possesses formidable body-tempering cultivation in addition to his weapon arts. 91
- Carries a four-thousand-jin hoe with ease. 68
- Recognized the potential connection between Zhou Muyun’s Seven-Colored Glazed Body and the Seven-Treasure Glazed Body, then directed Zhou to the latter technique. 71 72
- Gifted Zhou Golden-Eyed Python essence blood to aid his body-tempering breakthrough. 85
Healing and Cold-Qi Suppression
Yue Qingshan has knowledge of healing arts and has spent years maintaining a treatment for Miao Yue’er’s Extreme Cold Force. 84 100
- Used medicine to wake Miao Yue’er after she was brought to him unconscious. 84
- Cultivates Red Vein Grass and combines its essence with Scarlet Flame Exquisite Fruit to prepare a medicinal liquid that suppresses Miao Yue’er’s cold qi. 100
- The treatment manages the symptoms for an extended period but does not remove the underlying Extreme Cold Force. 100
Cultivation Knowledge
Yue Qingshan retains knowledge of the five great sects’ shared origin. He revealed that they were once the Five Elements Sects, whose lost Five Elements General Outline could condense and fuse the five elemental true qi types. 120
- Warned Zhou Muyun that cultivating further elemental true qi without the lost manual could cause fatal backlash. 120
- Advised Zhou to obtain a concealment art to hide his mixed true-qi fluctuations from other sects. 120

- Long Qi — Forget-Worry Valley master whom Yue Qingshan crushed and forced to cancel the assassination contract on Zhou Muyun. 99
