Background / History

Yue Qingshan was once one of Heavy Earth Gate’s foremost martial artists. Known across Skycloud Prefecture as the “Spear-and-Staff Mastery,” he brought Bedrock Court to first place in the Three-Courtyard Tournament for several consecutive years. His spear and staff arts were considered divine, while his body-tempering cultivation was exceptional. He also trained his daughter, Yue Wuxue, who ultimately surpassed him and overshadowed her contemporaries. 91

His family was shattered after Yue Wuxue and Miao Lingfeng had Miao Yue’er. Miao Lingfeng, secretly the prime minister’s son and the Ninth Princess’s betrothed, was forced to leave his family. The Ninth Princess implanted Extreme Cold Force into Miao Yue’er, crippling her cultivation and causing her to faint whenever she circulated too much true qi. Yue Wuxue disappeared while seeking Miao Lingfeng, leaving Yue Qingshan to care for their daughter. Yue Qingshan later spoke of Yue Wuxue as deceased, though the circumstances of her fate have not been established. 83 84 163

After Heavy Earth Gate could not intervene against the imperial family, Yue Qingshan withdrew from teaching and resumed command of the declining Bedrock Court. He allowed the court to fall behind its rivals while he devoted himself to Miao Yue’er and searched for ways to suppress her cold qi. 91 100

During Heavy Earth Gate’s disciple selection, Yue Qingshan selected Zhou Muyun over the better-supported Qin Heng because Zhou’s poverty meant he could “endure hardship”—and because Yue Qingshan needed someone to tend his garden. 66 He tested Zhou by ordering him to reclaim a courtyard containing Black Tortoise Stone with a four-thousand-jin hoe. Zhou completed the task in three days, earning Yue Qingshan’s recognition. 68 70

Yue Qingshan subsequently directed Zhou toward the Seven-Treasure Glazed Body and Demon Ape World-Quelling Staff, rewarded him with cultivation resources for tending Red Vein Grass, and privately taught him after Zhou won the Three-Courtyard Tournament. He backed Bedrock Court with a substantial wager before Zhou’s victory. 71 75 88 92

When Zhou’s cultivation of five kinds of true qi became unstable, Yue Qingshan provided a Qi-Settling Pill and directed him toward the thirty-year-old Spirit-Fusion Flower in Tu Shan’s medicinal garden. Zhou won the flower in Jadegreen Manor’s martial competition, and Yue Qingshan spent three days refining it into a Spirit-Fusion Pill for him. 136 145 147

Yue Qingshan also completed a long-prepared treatment for Miao Yue’er using Red Vein Grass and Scarlet Flame Exquisite Fruit. After a dangerous reaction, the medicine suppressed her Extreme Cold Force and allowed her cultivation to advance. Soon afterward, an invitation to the Heaven’s Chosen Banquet arrived with a hairpin Yue Qingshan had given Yue Wuxue when she came of age. He confirmed its authenticity and warned Zhou and Miao Yue’er to remain together at the banquet. 148 149 150

Yue Qingshan had secretly obtained information and medicines from Tian Ming, an altar master of the All-Beings Demon Gate, while helping him kill vicious beasts in return. After learning that Xiahou Yuan had arranged an attack on Miao Yue’er, Yue Qingshan compelled Tian Ming to accompany him to the prefectural office. He killed Xiahou Yuan there; Tian Ming subsequently displayed the bodies of Xiahou Yuan and two other officials as a public threat. 163 165

Following Zhou Muyun’s breakthrough to the True Astral Realm, Yue Qingshan secured his appointment as acting master of Bedrock Court and announced a seclusion of three to six months. He later left Heavy Earth Gate without taking Miao Yue’er, leaving her a letter and a hidden chamber stocked with cultivation manuals, treasures, money, and an escape route for her and Zhou. 169 171 182

Yue Qingshan subsequently gave Sect Master Ouyang Changhe the location of Tian Ming’s hideout and a safe route through the Ten-Thousand-Mile Marsh. He required Ouyang to protect Zhou and Miao Yue’er and, at his own request, publicly expel him for collusion with the Demonic Sect. The disgrace severed his formal ties to Heavy Earth Gate so that his forthcoming actions would not endanger it. His precise plans remain undisclosed. 183 184 185

Appearance

Yue Qingshan usually presents himself as an elderly farmer rather than a renowned martial artist. He often tends Bedrock Court’s vegetable plots in coarse linen clothing, with his trouser legs rolled up and a hoe over his shoulder. 66

Personality

Yue Qingshan is eccentric, terse, and deliberately difficult to read. He appears to treat disciple recruitment as a way to find farm labor, calls Zhou Muyun a “foolish brat,” and claims his harsh tests are merely for amusement. 66 70 72 His seemingly idle behavior conceals a precise assessment of perseverance, loyalty, and character.

As a teacher, he is exacting and merciless in criticism. He repeatedly corrects Zhou’s staff forms, rejects brute-force technique, and emphasizes that martial intent must be personally comprehended rather than copied. 92 Despite this severity, he provides valuable resources, secret guidance, and direct protection to those he accepts. 71 83 He later used his standing to secure Zhou’s appointment as acting court master and prepared cultivation resources for him before leaving the sect. 171 182

His greatest vulnerability is Miao Yue’er. Yue Qingshan’s affection for his granddaughter, grief over his daughter, and hatred of the injustice done to their family shape nearly all of his decisions. 83 84 163 He also proves fiercely protective of Zhou Muyun once the latter earns his trust, personally intervening against assassins and forcing Forget-Worry Valley to withdraw its contract on him. 83 99 Although he once resented Zhou’s growing closeness with Miao Yue’er, Zhou’s accomplishments and devotion gradually won his approval. 92 145 147

Yue Qingshan is willing to cooperate with Tian Ming despite their opposing affiliations, saying that the distinction between righteous and demonic paths matters less to him than his family. He nevertheless threatens Tian Ming for investigating his private life. His later request to be publicly disgraced shows his willingness to sacrifice his reputation to shield Heavy Earth Gate and the two young people. 163 184 185
