Background
Yan was one of Pope Hall's three foremost younger geniuses and a member of Spirit Hall's Golden Generation. His talent was regarded as first-rate, with Li Qinglian privately comparing his cultivation pace to Dai Mubai and Zhu Zhuqing's. 10
When Bibi Dong's faction sought to delay Li Qinglian's appointment as Holy Son, Yan volunteered to fight him after Xie Yue refused to challenge a six-year-old. Yan hoped that victory would secure the Holy Son position and prove himself worthy of Hu Liena. 10
Appearance
Yan is distinguished by short crimson hair that appears to burn with a thin layer of flame when he activates his power. 11
- Crimson hair and a fire-like presence. 10 11
- Uses the Flame Lord martial soul, whose fire-and-earth nature manifests through magma, granite, and flames. 11 12
Personality
Yan is prideful, competitive, and highly conscious of status. His fear of losing to a six-year-old was intensified by the prospect of losing Hu Liena's respect and his standing among Spirit Hall's younger generation. 12
His pursuit of Hu Liena is possessive and poorly judged: he proposed that she kiss him if he defeated Li Qinglian, treating her affection as a wager. Nevertheless, Yan is persistent and capable of learning from defeat; after his first loss, he deliberately selected a mobility-focused fourth Soul Skill to address the Flame Lord's central weakness. 21 22
Abilities & Skills
Flame Lord Martial Soul
A rare dual-attribute martial soul combining fire's explosive force with earth's defense.
- Possesses strong offensive and defensive potential. 22
- Its major weakness is clumsiness and limited mobility. 22
- Yan initially believed its fire attribute would naturally counter Li Qinglian's tree-like martial soul. 11
Hell Lava Blast
Yan's first Soul Skill unleashes scorching magma from his palms.
- The magma cracks stone tiles, distorts the air, and advances like a fire dragon. 11
- Li Qinglian neutralized it by using Death Siphon to absorb its heat and energy. 11
Granite Rock
Yan's second Soul Skill raises massive granite slabs marked with molten patterns.
- Combines physical hardness with intense heat. 12
- Can surround and crush an opponent from multiple directions. 12
- Li Qinglian's Withered Glory Prison vines were able to crack and constrict the granite. 12
Hellfire
Yan's third Soul Skill coats his body in erupting crimson flames and turns him into a charging fireball.
- Its heat scorches the ground and burns back Li Qinglian's vines. 13
- The technique rapidly consumes Yan's Soul Power, leaving him vulnerable to attrition. 13
Fire Flash Step
Yan's fourth Soul Skill, acquired from a Flame Shadow Leopard, provides burst movement speed.
- Chosen specifically to prevent Li Qinglian from binding and draining him as in their first duel. 22
- Greatly improved Yan's agility, though it could still be suppressed inside Li Qinglian's Death Domain. 22
Relationships
- Li Qinglian — Rival and two-time opponent. Yan challenged him for the Holy Son position, then spent six years preparing for a rematch; Li Qinglian defeated him both times. 10 13 22
- Hu Liena — Yan's unrequited love interest. His jealousy of her growing affection for Li Qinglian drove his second challenge; after losing, he agreed to stop pursuing her. 10 21 23
- Xie Yue — Fellow Golden Generation member and Hu Liena's brother. Xie Yue declined to challenge Li Qinglian, leaving Yan to step forward. 10
- Bibi Dong — Pope Hall's leader, whose political dispute with Worship Hall created Yan's opportunity to contend for the Holy Son position. 10
Story Role / Major Arcs
Challenge for the Holy Son Position
Yan entered the dispute over Spirit Hall's Holy Son title believing his Rank 31 cultivation and elemental advantage gave him a decisive edge. He opened with Hell Lava Blast, followed by Granite Rock and Hellfire, but Li Qinglian continuously drained his Soul Power, heat, and life energy through Death Siphon. 11 12 13
Unable to sustain Hellfire, Yan was immobilized by Withered Glory Prison and forced to concede. He later estimated that Death Siphon had drained roughly forty percent of his Soul Power during the fight and reduced his Soul Skill output by about thirty percent. 13 14 15
Second Challenge
Six years later, Yan—now Rank 44—challenged Li Qinglian again after seeing Hu Liena's affection for him. Unlike his first duel, Yan had prepared specifically to avoid entanglement, sacrificing a potential offensive Soul Skill for Fire Flash Step's mobility. 21 22
Li Qinglian nevertheless overwhelmed him with Death Domain and a restrained Falling Death Star attack, shattering Yan's defense and leaving him bloodied, kneeling, and temporarily unable to use Soul Power. Yan accepted the widening gap between them, conceded defeat, and ended his pursuit of Hu Liena. 22 23
