Background / History
Shrek Academy is a ten-thousand-year-old soul master institution with continent-wide prestige. Tang San is credited with raising it to an “unimaginable height,” and its connection to the Tang Sect includes an annual Tang Sect exemption quota for admission. 4
Admission is difficult: applicants require both sufficient strength and a city lord's recommendation letter. This requirement makes entry especially difficult for commoner soul masters, while children of influential families attend to build connections and obtain resources. 45 46
The academy’s influence extends across the Douluo Three Kingdoms. Former students, nobles, and powerful families use their Shrek connections as a political and social network, and many reclusive powerhouses retain ties through relatives or descendants educated there. 115 643
Shrek initially lagged behind the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy in soul-tool development. Sea God Pavilion elders viewed soul tools as inferior to traditional cultivation, and the academy’s Soul Tool Department was substantially weaker than Mingde Hall. 6 152
During the All-Continent Advanced Soul Master Academy Soul Fighting Competition, Elder Xuan arranged covert assistance for Shrek’s team through three spirit-attribute graduates. An anti-cheating soul tool detected the interference, leading to the graduates’ apprehension and Shrek’s withdrawal from the tournament. 60 63 64 The academy publicly portrayed the incident as a “dark curtain,” while Mu En privately criticized the fixation on protecting its ten-thousand-year glory over student development. 72
Shrek later entered an exchange-student arrangement with the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy. Its students studied soul engineering in Mingde Hall, while Sun Moon students criticized Shrek’s austere facilities, including standing meals in the cafeteria and severely inadequate dormitory toilets. 117 122
The academy repeatedly attempted to recruit Huo Yuhao due to his Spirit Eye and Ultimate Ice potential. Yan Shaozhe first sought him as an exchange student; later, Cai Meier offered resources, Sea God Pavilion access, and even a 100,000-year soul beast. Huo Yuhao refused every offer and remained with the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy. 87 348 349
Campus and Administration
Sea God Pavilion
The Sea God Pavilion is Shrek’s highest governing body. Its master is the academy’s foremost authority, while its elders direct major policy, cultivation resources, warfare, and external relations. 773 867
- The pavilion stands on an island in Sea God Lake and is built around the Golden Ancient Tree. 825
- Mu En served as Sea God Pavilion Master during the academy’s decline and directed its resistance preparations against the Sun Moon Empire. 625 641
- Yan Shaozhe later became pavilion master, but surrendered Shrek City to prevent further casualties during the Sun Moon occupation. 819 824
- Xuan Zi subsequently became pavilion master at the Lingdou City base. 867
Courts and Departments
- Outer Court — Shrek had roughly 4,000 outer-court students during the exchange period. 122
- Inner Court — Inner-court students undertake monitoring missions against Evil Soul Masters and are frequently unavailable for tournaments. 61
- Martial Soul Department — Led by Yan Shaozhe and later represented by Cai Meier in recruitment efforts. 87 348
- Soul Tool Department — Historically underdeveloped; Fan Yu was its leading soul engineer despite being only an eighth-grade soul engineer, a rank considered ordinary at Mingde Hall. 152
- Shrek Inspection Group — Operatives and spies active across the Douluo Three Kingdoms. 625
Education and Student Life
Shrek’s public reputation rests on powerful teachers, strict discipline, protection of students, and its status as a premier soul master training ground. 35
However, its methods are often severe or controversial:
- Zhou Yi expelled students for minor misconduct such as poor running performance or arguments, while Dai Huabin allegedly avoided expulsion despite hiring someone to kill Huo Yuhao. 19
- Students were required to stand while eating in the cafeteria. 122
- Dormitory sanitation was severely overcrowded, with hundreds of students competing for a single toilet. 122
- During Xuan Zi’s later leadership, the academy used elixirs for forced cultivation growth, rapidly improving deployable students’ strength at the cost of their future potential. 867
- Xuan Zi expanded enrollment and lowered admission thresholds, allowing students with weaker cultivation or family backgrounds to attend. 866
Major Conflicts
Soul Fighting Competition Scandal
Elder Xuan sought to secure Shrek’s championship by arranging external support and manipulating match conditions. The anti-cheating soul tool exposed three graduates using soul skills from the audience; Shrek withdrew after being confronted. 52 60 63 64
The scandal damaged the academy’s reputation, especially in the Sun Moon Empire, though Shrek’s longstanding prestige preserved substantial public support elsewhere. 283 381
Rivalry with the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy
Shrek and the Sun Moon Royal Soul Engineer Academy competed over cultivation methods, soul-tool technology, exchange students, and elite talent. Shrek’s leadership considered Huo Yuhao essential to its future and repeatedly argued that only Shrek could properly cultivate an Ultimate Martial Soul user into a Limit Douluo. 87 345 349
At the Pan-continental tournament in Mingdu, the Sun Moon team eliminated Shrek in the quarterfinals after Huo Yuhao destroyed the team’s coordinated offensive and captured Xu Sanshi. 368 369
Conflict with the Holy Spirit Church
Shrek conducted campaigns against Evil Soul Masters and destroyed Holy Spirit Church strongholds. In retaliation, Zhong Liwu targeted the families of Shrek students, causing protests, withdrawals, reduced enrollment, and a severe crisis of confidence in the academy. 270 543 544 556
Although Shrek elders mobilized against Zhong Liwu, they could not reliably intercept him across the vast territories of the Douluo Three Kingdoms. 544
War with the Sun Moon Empire
As the Sun Moon Empire expanded, Shrek aligned with the Douluo Three Kingdoms and attempted to rally independent powerhouses for resistance. 625 641
Shrek elders planned raids and diversionary attacks against Sun Moon forces, including an intended attack on the Sun Moon Imperial Palace to create an escape route from Mingdu. 411 424
Huo Yuhao eventually arrived at Shrek City with the Sun Moon army. Yan Shaozhe ordered the gates opened to save lives, allowing the city and academy to be occupied. 824 825
Leadership
- Mu En — Sea God Pavilion Master and Dragon God Douluo; prioritized student growth over institutional glory and directed resistance preparations during the Sun Moon Empire’s advance. 72 625
- Xuan Zi — Level 98 Super Douluo; repeatedly prioritized Shrek’s victory and prestige through controversial methods, later becoming Sea God Pavilion Master at the Lingdou City base. 60 867
- Yan Shaozhe — Dean of the Martial Soul Department and Mu En’s disciple; negotiated exchanges, pursued Huo Yuhao’s recruitment, and later surrendered Shrek City to prevent further loss of life. 87 157 824
- Cai Meier — Sea God Pavilion elder and Martial Soul Department dean; managed tournament strategy and repeatedly attempted to recruit Huo Yuhao. 347 348 349
- Xian Lin'er — Martial God Douluo; defended exchange students against Evil Soul Masters and later helped lead Shrek’s student forces. 277 625
- Zhang Lexuan — Senior student elevated to Sea God Pavilion Elder and Vice Dean of the Martial Soul Department after becoming a Titled Douluo. 544 773
Reputation
Shrek’s reputation was once so entrenched that nobles, commoners, imperial figures, and even political rivals aspired to attend it. Many people in the Star Luo Empire supported Shrek over their own national team during tournaments. 61 83
Its prestige declined through the cheating scandal, repeated tournament losses, student-family attacks by the Holy Spirit Church, and the surrender of Shrek City. 310 544 824
At its Lingdou City base, Xuan Zi promoted “Gratitude Education,” teaching that the people of the Dou Ling Empire owed Shrek Academy an unpayable debt for its historical protection. The policy generated resentment beyond the academy, despite improving student loyalty and enrollment figures. 866 867 871
