Background / History

Peasant son

Zhou Yan was originally an ordinary college student before transmigrating into the body of a sixteen-year-old peasant boy in Willow Village, outside Qingyun County of Great Xia. As the third son of Zhou Dazhuang and Madam Liu, he was assigned the family’s harshest work: farming, chopping firewood, hauling water, and feeding livestock. His branch of the family had received poor land and a dilapidated house after his grandfather favored Zhou Dashan, the second uncle. 1

Refusing to remain a powerless farm laborer, Zhou Yan entered the mountains in search of a martial opportunity. He witnessed a fatally wounded brocade-robed Martial Adept defeat several attackers, waited until the man was certainly dead, then took the Basic Stance Art, Mountain-Breaking Fist, and roughly twenty taels of silver from the corpse. He buried the bodies and erased evidence before returning to village life. 3

Secret cultivation and departure from Willow Village

Zhou Yan maintained a double life: laboring in the fields by day while training in the woods at night. He spent nearly all of his initial silver on Body-Tempering Decoction, improvising medicinal wipes when he lacked a bath barrel and enduring the pain to accelerate his growth. 5 7

When Azure Cloud Gang members searched Willow Village for their missing young master, Zhou Yan calmly denied seeing him. The incident reinforced his belief that secrecy and strength were necessary for survival. 6

After surviving Blackwind Ridge and concealing stolen goods, Zhou Yan staged injuries with his own fist art, fabricated a demonic-beast attack, and deceived White Cloud Martial Hall’s investigation. 11 His sister Zhou Xing and brother-in-law Zhao Shan later secured him an opening in the Sun Family Guard Corps, giving him a route out of the village. 12

Zhou Yan joined the Sun Family guards through Zhao Shan’s recommendation. He concealed his existing Body-Tempering cultivation, trained in the Mountain-Settling Stance, and used the system to transfer his Basic Stance Art foundation into the new discipline. 14

After defending Warehouse No. 3 from Black Tiger Hall raiders, he was recognized as a Body-Tempering cultivator and transferred to Mountain-Suppressing Martial Hall. 16 17 There, he hid the Mountain-Breaking Fist because it could connect him to Azure Cloud Gang deaths, while publicly cultivating the hall’s Mountain-Suppressing Fist. 14 17

Escort mission and rise through Qi Gathering

Financial pressure led Zhou Yan to accept an escort mission for Sun Wenyue and Sun Wenyao. During the journey, he refused a ten-year Sun Family retainer contract, but accepted increased pay and discounted medicine without surrendering his independence. 22 23

When Black Tiger Hall pursued Sun Wenyao and the Scarlet Blood Lingzhi through the mountains, Zhou Yan protected her, treated her injuries, and broke into the Qi-Gathering Realm. He then killed two Qi-Gathering pursuers and their Body-Tempering subordinates, leaving no witnesses. 27

At Qinghe City, Sun Wenyue rewarded him with silver, Qi Gathering Pills, medicinal paste, and a Qin Residence Guest Retainer Token for protecting Sun Wenyao and preserving the Lingzhi. 29 Zhou Yan declined Sun Wenyao’s romantic feelings, choosing to focus solely on martial advancement. 30

Martial Meet and Azure Cloud Gang’s destruction

Back in Qingyun County, Zhou Yan represented Mountain-Suppressing Martial Hall at the Martial Meet. He defeated Xu Changqing, Zhao Quan, Zhou Hong, Ma Biao, and Luo Chengyuan, ultimately winning the Qi-Condensing Pill. His victory over Luo came after he endured several spear wounds, seized the spear shaft, and shattered it with Mountain-Suppressing Fist. 39 43

His performance earned him Class A status, waived tuition, monthly support, the complete Mountain-Suppressing Fist manual, and instruction in the Edgebreaker Saber Technique from Hall Master Xue Zhenshan. 42 45

After reaching Meridian Opening, Zhou Yan chose the dangerous Demon-Slaying Hall path over the safer Martial Examination and sect route. 46 Azure Cloud Gang leader Zhao Xiong responded by sending two deputy leaders and more than twenty elites to ambush him. Zhou Yan killed the entire force, infiltrated the gang headquarters, defeated Zhao Xiong, and exterminated the remaining gang members before leaving Qingyun County. 47 48

Northern Frontier

While traveling north, Zhou Yan killed a den of Pig Demons and used their tusks as proof for entering the Demon-Slaying Hall’s sphere of influence. 51 52 At Northwind Pass, Shen Qingtang revealed herself as the mysterious woman who had previously saved him from fox demons at Blackwind Ridge. Recognizing his Ultimate Realm stance, she granted him the Mountain-Subduing Heart Scripture and Hell-Subduing Golden Body. 55

After Shen Qingtang dissolved the Demon-Slaying Hall and established the Northwind Army, Zhou Yan began taking Monster-Slaying Hall missions to gain demon essence, medicine, and combat experience. 56 He survived the defense of Qinghan County as the sole survivor of Gu Changshan’s original reinforcement group, then joined the Northern Frontier alliance as an autonomous Guest Elder. 61 62

Zhou Yan began as a poorly dressed village laborer, distinguished more by work-worn clothing than status. Secret martial cultivation gradually transformed him into a broad-shouldered, muscular young man with hardened sinews and far greater endurance. 3 6 7

He is cautious, observant, and exceptionally good at maintaining a false appearance. He waited hours before approaching the dead Martial Adept, cleaned the ruined temple, concealed his cultivation in the Guard Corps, staged injuries after Blackwind Ridge, and limited his displayed strength at the martial hall. 3 11 14 15

Zhou Yan’s restraint has a hard limit. When enemies threaten his safety or family, he acts preemptively and leaves no witnesses. His destruction of the Azure Cloud Gang was motivated not by status or wealth, but by the conclusion that allowing Zhao Xiong to live would endanger everyone connected to him. 47 48
