Background and History
In the parallel timeline Neji visits, Hashirama yielded the Hokage position to Madara and serves Konoha during a war against the other four major villages. Neji seeks him out because Sand holds the Dragon Vein he needs to heal Tsunade. Hashirama accepts Neji’s account of parallel worlds after recognizing Tsunade’s bloodline, resemblance to his family, and Sage Art resonance 55 56.
Neji warns Hashirama and Tobirama that Madara’s Eye of the Moon plan conceals a scheme to revive Kaguya. Hashirama decides Madara must be told, but refuses to turn against Konoha’s Hokage while Sand’s attack is imminent. He brings Neji into the army as his guard and assigns him to confront key enemy combatants 57 58 59.
Hashirama battles the Sand leader Reto and his giant puppets with Sage Art Wood Release. The effort severely depletes his life force, and Neji transfers Sage Chakra to stabilize him. Hashirama later gives his foundational Yang Release to Madara, enabling Madara’s Rinnegan and a prototype Truth-Seeking Orb. The transfer proves fatal: Hashirama passes Wood Release power and the duty of protecting Konoha to Tsunade before dying 60 66 67 73 74.
Appearance
Hashirama has black hair and wears crimson armor. When he demonstrates Sage Art, bark-like crimson markings appear on his forehead, a sheen rises beneath his skin, and a faint Thousand-Armed Statue manifests behind him 56 71.
- Battlefield attire: Crimson armor with metal scales 56 57.
- Sage Art signs: Forehead markings resembling cracks in tree bark; drifting green leaf buds 71.
- After prolonged combat: Pale lips, diminished vitality, and additional white hair 61 67.
Personality
Hashirama is approachable with Neji and affectionate toward Tsunade, but acts decisively as a commander. He trusts Neji’s account without prolonged interrogation while securing their first meeting with Wood Release. When Tobirama urges action against Madara, Hashirama puts the immediate Sand offensive first and insists that Madara be informed as Hokage 56 58.
His humor extends to joking about Tsunade becoming Hokage and gambling with soldiers to quietly give them money. He also speaks to Tsunade about grief from the experience of losing his younger brother Itama. Beneath that warmth, he is willing to sacrifice his own life to give Konoha a chance against Reto 58 70 73.
Abilities & Skills
Wood Release and Sage Art
Hashirama creates battlefield-scale wooden defenses and constructs, including a Wood Golem and a Thousand-Armed Statue 60 61.
- Tree Realm Wall: Counters Reto’s attack on Konoha’s forces 60.
- True Several Thousand Hands and Top Transformed Buddha: Strike with a vast, multi-armed construct 60.
- Wood Dragon Technique: Produces multiple dragons; Neji’s Sage Chakra reinforces them during the fight with Reto 66.
- Limit: His demanding techniques drain his vitality. Hashirama acknowledges that burning life force is a flaw in his Sage Art 67 71.
All Creation and Yang Release
Hashirama’s All Creation can act on damaged souls as well as living tissue. He uses it first to stabilize Tsunade, then to repair the cracks in her soul and wake her 56 69.
- Forms life-filled roots and a vine bed while treating Tsunade 56 69.
- Transfers Yang Release to Madara, triggering the Rinnegan’s awakening and helping form a prototype Truth-Seeking Orb; the transfer exhausts his life force 73 74.
- Leaves Tsunade a fragment of power that subsequently awakens her Wood Release 74 75.
Spirit Visualization Method
Hashirama develops a genjutsu-based method to strengthen mental fortitude and teaches it to Neji and Tsunade 71.
- Users live an illusory lifetime with their spiritual body’s memories sealed, then examine the experience from a third-person perspective 71.
- He warns that the illusory life’s emotions and memories must be severed afterward to avoid confusion between it and reality 71.
- He places manifestations of All Creation—the illusion realm’s “seeds”—into his students’ consciousnesses 71.
