Background / History

During the Warring States era, the distinction between Main and Branch Houses was reportedly fluid: exceptional Branch House members could rise through the Clan Grand Tournament, while disgraced Main House members could be demoted. The present hereditary caste system replaced that arrangement, binding Branch House members to servitude from birth 21.

The Main House occupies the spacious central courtyards of the Hyuga Clan Grounds, while Branch House residences crowd the outer perimeter. This layout makes the Branch House both the clan's outer defense and a population under constant surveillance 4.

Its authority rests on the Caged Bird Seal. The seal can inflict brain death on Branch House members, destroy their Byakugan after death, suppress their chakra potential, and channel their ocular power to the Main House 1 8 77. Each branded member also has a corresponding Life Talisman held by the Main House, allowing remote activation of higher-level curse marks or direct detonation 71.
