Background / History

The Branch House is the hereditary subordinate caste of the Hyuga Clan. Its members live in crowded residences around the outer perimeter of the clan grounds, while the Main House occupies the central estates. They are expected to serve as guards, laborers, servants, and expendable shinobi. 1 4

Before Konoha’s founding, the Main House/Branch House distinction was not fixed at birth. Branch members could rise through merit in the Clan Grand Tournament, while Main House members could be demoted for serious wrongdoing. 21

Caged Bird Seal

The Caged Bird Seal is the central mechanism of Branch House oppression. It functions as a curse mark, a bloodline limiter, an execution device, and an ocular-power extraction network.

Rebellion and Liberation

The Branch House’s accumulated resentment erupts into open revolt after the seal’s harvesting purpose becomes known. More than 200 Branch House ninja confront the Main House Guard, demanding the abolition of the Caged Bird Seal. 118 119

The uprising is brutally suppressed: the Main House Guard kills over 80 Branch House rebels, while Hiashi uses Caged Bird Seal: Manipulation to force 30 Branch House elite ninja to attack their own comrades. 119

Ko Hyuga publicly exposes the system’s purpose during the revolt:

“The Branch House are livestock raised by the Main House.” 119

Later, Xiao disrupts the seals of Branch House guards rather than killing them during his assault beneath the graveyard. 156 Hiashi’s final attempt to sacrifice the entire Branch House through the master control scroll fails after Xiao’s overwrite of the network. 292 293
