Background / History

Hong is a war orphan whose father was an Elite Ninja and mother a Chunin; both died during the Third Shinobi World War 19. Her first known bond with Hyuga Xiao began when he rescued her from rogue shinobi in an alley, an event later revealed to have been observed by Danzō 111.

During her graduation examination, Xiao helps her overcome the fate node in which Uchiha Aoki would have broken her genjutsu and publicly humiliated her. After passing, Hong asks Xiao to teach her genjutsu, citing his understanding of its combat applications; he accepts and begins planning training around her weak constitution, chakra control, hypnosis, and taijutsu ambushes 18 19.

Hong later becomes one of Xiao's most trusted accomplices. When the Hyuga Main House pursues the wounded Xiao, she hides him, stabilizes his mind with her self-created Illusion Technique: Mental Reassurance, defeats two pursuers with an illusion barrier, and leads him toward Asuma Sarutobi instead of surrendering him 88. Hong is grateful, observant, and stubbornly determined to gain the power needed to protect others. Her definition of a ninja is someone who protects the people important to them, a belief that guides her decision to defy rules for Xiao's sake 88. She is not blindly obedient: she follows Xiao against powerful enemies but challenges his emotional detachment, his treatment of people as “anchors,” and his willingness to sacrifice himself or others for power 90 110.

Her exposure to Astral Force, the Urashiki Seed, and Xiao's ruthless campaigns hardens her. She increasingly chooses danger over passivity, rejects being merely protected, and accepts reverse erosion of her Seed despite its potentially fatal risk 182 198. Wounds, Bloodline Revelation, and the Land of Iron

After learning that Urashiki intends to use her as a vessel, Hong chooses reverse erosion rather than removal of the Seed.
