Background / History

Ancient One served as Kamar-Taj’s Sorcerer Supreme and Earth’s foremost sorcerer. Using the Eye of Agamotto, she investigated altered timelines after receiving a warning from Uatu. She found that she disappeared after leaving Kamar-Taj in most futures, while Stephen Strange was absent from those timelines entirely 4.

Believing an overwhelmingly powerful sorcerer or dimensional being intended to take Kamar-Taj, she chose to abandon her body through Astral Projection and seek Eternity rather than await her apparent execution. Feng Xu intercepted her astral form, folded space to return her to Kamar-Taj, and restrained both her soul and body with ease 4 5.

After witnessing Feng Xu overwhelm Kamar-Taj’s defenders and manipulate real space on a scale beyond her magic, Ancient One surrendered and offered to hear his demands. She revealed her true name, Yao, accepted Feng Xu as the new leader of Kamar-Taj, and began addressing him as “Sect Master” 5 6.

Feng Xu condemned Kamar-Taj’s dependence on borrowed and stolen power, ordered the sorcerers to stop pursuing conventional magic, and renamed the sanctuary the Ethereal Ascension Sect. Ancient One implemented the change, ordered Mordo and Kaecilius to erect the new sect plaque, and retained authority over the former Kamar-Taj under Feng Xu’s leadership 6 11.

Initially proud of Kamar-Taj’s magical library, Ancient One was embarrassed when Feng Xu identified its books as mediums connected to powerful beings. After receiving cultivation jade slips, she recognized cultivation as a path that could develop the human body’s innate potential without relying on cosmic artifacts or dimensional powers; she performed three bows and nine kowtows in gratitude, though Feng Xu refused to accept her as a formal disciple 7.

Ancient One embraced cultivation with conspicuous enthusiasm. She competed for spiritual energy during her first body-tempering session, reaching Body Tempering Stage Four while leaving Natasha at Stage One, then later offered the Time Stone as the core for a sect-wide Spirit-Gathering Formation 10 11.

Over the following year, she used the Time Stone and the three Sanctums’ magical artifacts to fill the sect with spiritual energy. She also cultivated the Myriad Thought Manifestation Art, dividing five divine thoughts into separate avatars and declaring her ambition to one day surpass Feng Xu and even multiversal beings such as Eternity 12.

While Mordo, Kaecilius, and Natasha plotted to siphon energy from the Dark Dimension, Ancient One had already entered it to draw Dormammu’s attention and steal energy herself. She used an avatar to provoke him, resurrected after he destroyed it, briefly defeated him with the Eye of Agamotto, and demonstrated enough physical strength to catch his punch outside her Holy Spirit state 26.

She later arranged for Natasha and Clea to meet Feng Xu after their return from the Dark Dimension. Ancient One also lamented that Clea’s early arrival at the sect had altered the future in which Clea would have met Stephen Strange 33.

Ancient One’s usual depicted form is an elderly white-haired man with a youthful complexion. Cultivation restored her body’s vitality, and her Myriad Thought Manifestation Art allows her to appear through numerous human, animal, and inanimate avatars 4 10 35.

Personality

Ancient One is resourceful, pragmatic, and extremely quick to adapt when faced with superior power. Rather than resist Feng Xu after recognizing the gap between them, she surrendered, shared her knowledge of the universe through telepathy, and positioned herself as his cooperative deputy 5 6.

She is also shamelessly eager for cultivation resources. She tried to avoid sharing Feng Xu’s body-tempering treatment with her disciples, eagerly accepted the cultivation path after studying the jade slips, and rapidly sought spiritual energy from the Dark Dimension 7 10 26.

Despite her deference to Feng Xu, she retains a mischievous, irreverent streak. She teases and intimidates her disciples through avatars, bickers with Dormammu, and tries to recruit Odin into the Ethereal Ascension Sect 22 26 35.
