Background / History

Odin sends Thor and Loki to Earth after the Aether's awakening loosens Midgard's seal and raises the threat of the returning Dark Elves. The mission is also intended to force both princes to mature as possible heirs: Odin considers Thor brave but reckless, overly fond of war, and lacking strategic judgment. 34

Thor arrives during the Dark Elves' London assault and rescues Alexei Shostakov and Yelena Belova from Algrim's Black Hole Grenade. His dramatic landing accidentally throws both people he rescued into nearby rubble, and his initial confidence proves misplaced when Algrim swats aside Mjolnir and hurls him into Loki. 38

After watching Loki take the impact of his fall, Thor mistakenly interprets his brother's past pranks and hostility as efforts to gain his attention. Overcome with guilt, he promises to protect Loki and never hit him again, while Loki is mainly exasperated by Thor's misunderstanding. 39

Thor's lightning-infused attacks can injure Algrim, but the Cursed Warrior's regeneration soon overwhelms him. Alexei intervenes to save Thor, and the two form an uneasy partnership against their common enemy. 39

During the battle with Malekith, Thor is injured by the Aether's life-draining attacks. Natasha Romanoff and her Golden Armored Warriors save him in repayment for his earlier rescue of Yelena. Thor witnesses Natasha's vastly stronger thunder techniques and is mocked by Loki as better suited to the title “God of Hammers.” 42 44

After returning to Asgard, Thor supports Loki's proposed decapitation strike against the Frost Giants. Odin catches the group before they depart, condemns Thor's battle-first thinking, strips him of his divine power, and banishes him to Earth.
