Chen Xiao originates from another universe and arrives in the Marvel world after consuming a Devil Fruit. His altered body grants him lightning-based powers and the latent potential to use Haki, but he initially lacks the physical conditioning to activate those techniques reliably 1 3.

After arriving at Kamar-Taj, Chen Xiao impulsively attacks Ancient One with lightning out of fear that she will regard him as a dimensional invader. Ancient One easily disperses the attack, separates his soul from his body to demonstrate her power, and explains that his abilities stem from dimensional energy. He accepts her as his master and commits himself to learning control over his powers and protecting the realm 2.

Over two years of study, Chen Xiao becomes one of Kamar-Taj's strongest disciples. He earns the position of chief disciple not only through combat strength, but by tutoring inexperienced students, organizing the library, assisting with cultivation problems, and helping others complete punishments and copying work 4.

On March 1, 2010, Ancient One assigns him to guard the New York Sanctum. Chen Xiao chooses New York because he believes its dimensional barrier is the weakest, while also refusing to take the Hong Kong post desired by Wang 5. At 177A Bleecker Street, he works alongside Sanctum guardian Daniel Drumm while beginning to build connections outside Kamar-Taj 6.

As his dimensional origin develops, the three Sanctums' Vishanti barrier begins treating his power as an outside-dimensional intrusion. Ancient One sends him to a barren dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt to continue his development without endangering Earth. Despite this carefree exterior, Chen Xiao is observant, strategic, and highly protective of people he considers his own. He plans carefully around the changing timeline, evaluates opponents through Observation Haki, and adapts rapidly to unfamiliar dimensional environments 8 164 166. His composure can disappear when allies or innocents are threatened; when Liu Yang is shot, Chen Xiao retaliates with overwhelming force against the Iron Soldiers 57 58.

He has a complicated relationship with foreknowledge. Chen Xiao knows portions of the world's expected future, but recognizes that his own presence has changed events. Even after attaining dimensional power, Chen Xiao remains willing to take substantial risks for an advantage. After becoming the New York Sanctum's guardian, Chen Xiao deliberately seeks a connection with Tony Stark without openly violating Kamar-Taj's neutrality. He first meets Stark at a charity gala, forms a connection with Pepper Potts, and later helps Stark after the events surrounding his captivity and Iron Man's emergence 5 7 8 9 16.

Asgard and the Underworld

Chen Xiao travels to Asgard with Thor to help Jane Foster, earns Odin's favor, receives the Aether and Primordial Divine Power, and agrees to supervise Loki on Earth 136 141 143. He later enters the Underworld repeatedly, where his battles with Hela refine his lightning and Haki into more potent forms 145 148 150.

Later, Chen Xiao uses the Eternal Flame's Resurrection Rule to restore Fenrir and Hela's skeletal army. Their resulting attachment to him provokes Hela, who attacks in her Death Goddess Form. Chen Xiao initially holds back but ultimately shatters her sword and overpowers her 316.

Hell Dimension Conflict

After defeating Blackheart's forces, Chen Xiao and Tony enter the Hell Dimension to confront the source of its incursions. Chen Xiao seizes control of Sighing Ridge's core, kills Blackheart, rejects Mephisto's demand for the Dimension Core, and is forced into a near-fatal battle against the Lord of Hell 159 160 173 174 175.

During the battle, Chen Xiao awakens Conqueror's Haki and the Rumble-Rumble Fruit's Lightning Domain. Although Mephisto's true form overwhelms him, Ancient One intervenes, and Chen Xiao later returns to the New York Sanctum with major gains from the conflict 177 178 183 184 189.

Kamar-Taj Rebellion

When Kaecilius leads Fallen Sorcerers in rebellion, Chen Xiao confronts him as Kamar-Taj's chief disciple. Learning that Kaecilius's wife and daughter were intercepted and sent to the Dark Dimension, Chen Xiao investigates rather than simply carrying out punishment, exposing the involvement of an unknown middleman connected to Dormammu's operations 298 299.

Chen Xiao later protects Kaecilius and his family's remnant souls during a confrontation with Dormammu. After Kaecilius helps resist Dormammu's lingering will, Chen Xiao preserves the souls within his inner dimension. Kaecilius swears loyalty to him in response 360 361 362.

Ascension and the Dark Dimension

Chen Xiao's emerging dimensional origin begins to trigger Earth's Sanctum defenses, so Ancient One sends him to an uninhabited dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt. There, he destroys Mephisto's remaining will, refines its origin into his own Thunderfire Micro-Dimension, and becomes a Dimension Lord. He splits the Abyss-contaminated planet to eliminate a possible Hell gateway while containing the resulting disturbance 349 350.

In the Dark Dimension, Chen Xiao redirects Dormammu's attack, shatters a projection of his consciousness, and absorbs a dangerous quantity of dark-dimensional energy. He uses the overload to break out, then methodically eradicates Dormammu's will from the energy within his realm. The purified power strengthens and expands his inner dimension into the Mixed-Color Thunder Dimension 360 361.
