Background & History

Newt was already a renowned magizoologist when he met Xiwen Rosier at King's Cross. Professor Silvanus Kettleburn frequently praised Newt's travels, research, and creature-rescue work; the two corresponded, and Kettleburn assisted with Newt's books. 100

Ten years before meeting Xiwen, Newt rescued the Thunderbird Frank from traffickers in Egypt at Dumbledore's request. The mission led him to the United States, where he inadvertently disrupted Grindelwald's plans, helped resolve a crisis in the American wizarding world, and met Tina Goldstein and Jacob Kowalski. 110

During the conflict with Grindelwald, Newt served as a field operative and creature expert for Dumbledore's allies. Newt is gentle, considerate, and readily accepts responsibility for problems involving magical creatures. When Little Cat's sudden arrival at King's Cross exposed magic to Muggles, he stepped forward to take responsibility alongside Xiwen rather than let the younger wizard face the Ministry alone. 100

His compassion extends even to dangerous creatures. At Erkstag Prison, he argued that the Manticore was a victim of exploitation by the German Ministry and tried to preserve its species through its hatchlings.
