Background / History

In 1899, Grindelwald left Durmstrang and stayed with his great-aunt Bathilda Bagshot in Godric's Hollow while searching for the Deathly Hallows. There he met Albus Dumbledore; the two became exceptionally close, shared an ambition to overturn the International Statute of Secrecy, and formed a Blood Pact never to harm one another. Xiwen later theorized that Grindelwald may have sought out Dumbledore deliberately through his innate precognition. 199

Before the main conflict, Grindelwald attempted to destroy Paris. His blue-black fire at Père Lachaise Cemetery became a defining symbol of his movement, though Flamel and other wizards ultimately extinguished it. 103 122 214

He built a network of fanatically loyal followers across Europe. In Britain, he placed Professor Lore inside Hogwarts and ordered him to destroy the castle's Magic Nodes, which sustained its protective barrier. Lore's cell included the ghost Scholar Angulo, two dark wizards, and a Venomous Leopard intended to distract Hogwarts with poisonous gas. The conspiracy was exposed before the first node could be destroyed. 72

On New Year's Day 1938, Grindelwald confronted Nicolas Flamel at the Palais Garnier and sought to bring him to Nurmengard. Dumbledore believed Grindelwald targeted Flamel because he valued precognitive abilities and considered seers who could obstruct his plans a threat. The controlled Qilin initially chose Grindelwald, allowing him to proclaim war on Muggles. The deception was exposed when Newt presented the surviving Qilin and Dumbledore dispelled the necromantic control. Grindelwald turned the crowd's uncertainty against Dumbledore through an impassioned speech, but the genuine Qilin ultimately selected Vicência Santos; Santos won the election and placed Grindelwald on the international wanted list. 132 133 135

During the subsequent war, Grindelwald repeatedly avoided a decisive duel with Dumbledore while directing attacks through his followers and manipulating events to force Dumbledore into defensive priorities.
