Background
Xu Changqing awakened the wisdom of his previous life while an outer sect disciple assigned to Dongting Immortal Sect's spirit fields after awakening a Wood Spirit Root. Facing expulsion after two failed assessments, he discovered that harvesting spirit plants increased his lifespan and that this lifespan could be exchanged for technique upgrades through the Shennong System. 1 2
With Li Sancai's advice, Xu raised the Evergreen Formula and hired Han Su to replenish his field's earth qi in exchange for one-tenth of the harvest. He used the improved field to pass his final assessment with exactly one thousand jin of spirit rice, exposing Zhang Er's sabotage accusation as baseless and becoming a formal disciple. 2 3 6
As a formal disciple, Xu received a second-grade spirit field and deliberately chose an isolated plot near an abandoned cave. He built his position through high-yield spirit-rice cultivation, side work harvesting for senior disciples, trade with Hu Bugui, and paid cooperation with cultivators of other spiritual roots. 9 11 14 15
Appearance
Xu is described as having an ordinary appearance, which causes others to underestimate his ability and connections. After becoming a formal disciple, he exchanges the gray robes of the outer sect for white robes bearing a green rice-sprout emblem. 11 35
- White formal-disciple robes with a green rice sprout embroidered over the chest. 11
- A “wood” spirit seal appears on his right palm while using the Wood-Spirit Entanglement Art. 13
- Tall enough that Bai Ling'er reaches only his chest. 25
Personality
Xu is cautious, patient, and intensely pragmatic. He recognizes the danger posed by stronger disciples such as Zhang Er and deliberately hides the true extent of his cultivation, harvests, and plant-sensing ability rather than attracting attention before he can defend himself. 1 4 25 40
He treats cultivation and farming as long-term pursuits. Rather than recklessly spending lifespan or resources, he weighs future needs—postponing the Master-level upgrade of Spirit Rice Wine until he has a better spell to support it, investing in manure and rainfall, and preserving mutated spirit rice for propagation instead of immediate consumption. 16 25 49
Despite his guarded nature, Xu reciprocates sincere help. He thanks Li Sancai for his guidance, continues employing Han Su after their initial contract, shares resources with Hu Bugui, and cares for his spirit animals. 7 24 38 50

Establishing the Secluded Spirit Field
Xu claims a remote second-grade field, chooses the Wood-Spirit Entanglement Art, and begins building a self-sufficient farming operation. Market and Patronage
After witnessing the control exercised by the Farmer's Heart Society, Xu joins the organization rather than directly oppose it. Mutated Spirit Rice and Black Soil
Xu discovers hidden Black Soil beneath Stone Mountain and begins cultivating it in secret. Following a thunderstorm, one of his spirit rice plants mutates; he protects the plant, harvests its 999 grains, and replants the parent rice rather than consuming its valuable produce. 32 39 41 49
Earth Vein Mission
Xu accepts Hu Man's mission to tend an Earth-Spouting Lotus, descends to the eighteenth level of the Earth Vein despite the crushing pressure on non-Earth Spirit Root cultivators, and successfully transforms the lotus. The completed mission earns him major compensation and points. 45 46 47 50
