Cultivation Cycle

Spirit Fields are integral to Wood Spirit Root cultivation: disciples wrap seedlings in their own spiritual power before planting, making farming itself a form of Qi Refining. Spirit Rice plants release Wood Qi as they grow, allowing nearby Wood Spirit Root cultivators to absorb it. 3

Cultivation Methods

Four Seasons Scripture

The Four Seasons Scripture improves plant growth by following the seasonal changes affecting spirit plants. Its principles identify spring as the awakening of wood and spirit veins, summer as vigorous growth, autumn as fruit condensation, and winter as dormancy. 258

• Allows rapid sowing and maturation of large areas of Spirit Fields.

Auspicious Grain Record

A Heaven Grade agricultural cultivation method associated with the Grain Lord Token. Unlike the Four Seasons Scripture, it improves the entire cycle between Spirit Fields, Earth Qi, roots, and crops. 599 626

• Forms a rudimentary False Earth Vein during planting and improves seed germination.
• Improves resistance to pests, disease, harsh weather, and spiritual disturbances.
• Strengthens stalks, increases spiritual-energy absorption, raises grain-head count, and enhances fruit quality.
• Preserves up to ninety percent of root vitality after harvest, enabling repeated growth without replanting.
• Restores Earth Qi and nutrients each season, allowing sustainable cultivation. 626
• Can forcibly mature all crops within one mu at a minimum High-Quality Grade, generate seasonal spiritual mist, attempt to produce Auspicious Grain, or restore damaged Spirit Fields and Earth Veins by sacrificing a rare spirit plant. 626 691

Earth-Sealing Scripture

A higher-grade cultivation method that treats “earth” as the foundation that bears life and “wood” as the vitality that grows from it. It awakens Earth Veins through a Wood Spirit Root rather than directly manipulating Earth Qi. 694

• Raises seed germination by eighty percent and maximizes plant resistance throughout the growth cycle.
• Increases fruit spiritual-energy concentration by eighty percent and raises quality by two grades.
• Enables perpetual root growth, restores field nutrients and Earth Qi by two hundred percent each season, and guarantees flawless Supreme-Grade output.
• Can rapidly mature crops across ten mu without harming fertility. 722

Administration

At Dongting Immortal Sect, the Spirit Fields are managed through a specialized hierarchy:

Spirit Cultivation Envoys must monitor solar terms and environmental changes because spirit plants are often the first to react to disturbances in seasonal qi, Earth Veins, and natural disasters. 258

Xu Changqing later expanded the number of Spirit Cultivators from one to four. One position was assigned to Zhang Su for long service, while the remaining posts were to be decided through a Spirit Plant Cultivation Assembly and a public recommendation vote. 689

History

Dongting Immortal Sect

After awakening a Wood Spirit Root, Xu Changqing was assigned to Dongting’s Spirit Fields as an outer disciple. The early Outer Spirit Fields were Grade-One plots where disciples depended on crop harvests to pass sect assessments. 1 853

Xu’s initial field suffered from insufficient nutrients, water, and spiritual energy; Li Sancai suspected that the entire plot was defective. Later, Earth Spirit Root cultivator Han Su discovered that part of its Earth Qi had been siphoned away and restored its fertility using the Earthdraw Formula. 2 3

The Spirit Fields Xu first encountered were only the outskirts of a far larger core region. Core fields used Grade-Two Black Soil and released substantially denser Wood Qi during planting cycles. 8 12

Upon reaching Foundation Establishment, Wood Spirit Root cultivators could receive an additional mu of Grade-Two Spirit Field. Earth Spirit Root teams reclaimed the land by measuring it, loosening and turning the soil, then infusing it with Earth Qi to create fertile Black Soil. 124

Expansion and Red Maple Valley

Xu’s external holdings expanded from a single Grade-Two field to multiple plots through sect benefits, gifts, and management arrangements. By the time he settled in Red Maple Valley, he maintained seven mu of Grade-Two Spirit Fields while reserving much of his more valuable cultivation for his Portable Space. 124 179 625

Red Maple Valley offered roughly fifteen mu of reclaimable land, a nearby depression suitable for a pond, dense crimson maple groves, and the thousand-year-old Crimson Maple Ancient Tree. 423

Seasonal Coordination Reform

Xu led comparative trials between traditional cultivation and the Four Seasons Heavenly Craft Manual. Dewdrop Grass planted outside its proper solar term became weak and yellow, while crops planted during the proper term grew evenly and were expected to reach Supreme Grade. 718

Further tests showed that Seasonal Coordination could:

• More than double spirit-plant yields.
• Raise spiritual-energy concentration by forty percent.
• Produce sturdier plants with more concentrated medicinal properties. 718

The Dongting Immortal Sect adopted the system despite resistance from alchemists and other groups that benefited from undervaluing spirit farmers’ harvests. Grand Elder Xuan Yan endorsed the reform with the principle: “Follow the seasons, adapt to the tide!” 718

Special Cultivation Zones

The Azure Radiant Flow restored damaged fields and increased spiritual energy in some areas by as much as thirty percent. The most improved plots were often those previously harmed by drought, pests, or depleted spiritual energy. 754

Five revitalized areas reached Grade-Three standards in both fertility and spiritual-energy density. Xu designated them as Special Cultivation Zones, breaking Azurewood Peak’s former monopoly over Grade-Three Spirit Fields. 755

The Rong Family received one zone under two conditions:

1. Xu retained complete authority over cultivation plans.
2. He held priority to purchase all mutated spirit plants at no more than twenty percent above market value. 755

Spirit Melody Sect

Clearbrook Valley was selected as the Spirit Melody Sect’s home because of its medium-grade Spirit Vein, pure Water Qi, rich Wood Qi, medicinal plants, natural caves, and mostly harmless spirit beasts. Its narrow entrance made the valley easy to defend but difficult to escape if surrounded. 787

Han Su reclaimed the valley’s fields while avoiding damage to the Spirit Vein. Due to local conditions, these plots approached Grade-Three quality. 790 791

Threats and Restoration

• Overreclamation — Increasing the number of Spirit Fields can accelerate the frequency and severity of natural disasters. 293
• Rage-Spirit Storms — A severe past storm devastated Xu’s original area, especially Stone Mountain, and caused chaotic spiritual energy and deaths. 293
• Spirit-Eroding Fungus King — Its spores and mycelial secretions invade spirit plants, create bluish-purple patches, erode Spiritual Roots, and can cause cultivation regression. 324
• Spirit-Absorbing Leeches — A ruined field became a swamp of black sludge, death qi, miasma, and leeches that consumed both spirit vegetation and part of the underground Spirit Vein. 691
• Abandonment — Underground disturbances later caused more than half of Dongting’s Outer Spirit Fields to be left empty as disciple recruitment declined. 853

The Auspicious Grain Record provides a direct restoration method: a rare-grade spirit plant may be sacrificed as a Dao catalyst to restore a damaged Spirit Field or ruptured Earth Vein. 691

Northern Dipper Star Region

The Spirit Plant Bureau of Jade Balance Star manages hundreds of standardized Spirit Field regions. Soil spiritual-energy concentration, seeds, irrigation, and water use are regulated by separate divisions, producing highly consistent harvests. 1106 1108

Xu’s allotted fields include one mu of Grade-Five Resting Soil, ten mu of Grade-Four fields, one hundred mu of Grade-Three fields, two Tranquil-Mind Bamboo Groves, and a bamboo hut. 1113

His planned layout separates the fields by value and visibility:

• Grade Five — Seven Nine-Turn Starry Grass seeds arranged as the Northern Dipper, alongside rare Three-Eyed Clan spirit plants.
• Grade Four — Rare Heavenly Origin Realm plants, including Nine-Leaf Swordgrass, Dragonblood Tea Tree, Void Vine, and Azure-Sky Bodhi.
• Grade Three — Spirit Rice, vegetables, and common crops used as a natural cover for higher-value cultivation. 1117

Unlike the Heavenly Origin Realm, Jade Balance Star has no natural rainfall. Irrigation requires approval from the Wind and Thunder Directorate, which supplies Heavenly Dew. Grade-Five Resting Soil must receive seven mist-like irrigations spaced seven days apart to avoid disrupting its pulse. 1117
