Green moved quickly and left the market.

The exit also lay in the forest. The thorns beside it had not changed, and the entire woodland was silent. Green's boots crunched over fallen twigs now and then.

He emerged from the trees and reached the roadside. Looking up, he saw that the owl was still perched in its tree.

When it saw him come out, it merely turned its head to glance at him, then looked away without a word.

Green paid it no mind. He found his horse, checked it over, and, seeing nothing wrong, mounted and rode off!

As Green left the market, Eli, the market official who had traded with him earlier, appeared at the exit. Two men in black followed behind him, faint waves of radiation emanating from them both.

Eli gazed in the direction Green had gone and spoke without turning his head.

"Follow him. If anyone attacks him, help him if necessary!"

The humility Eli had shown while speaking with Green was gone. Now he radiated an oppressive authority.
