Background

Lin Fan was an ordinary young man before a fortune-teller promised him “great fortune.” Soon afterward, a runaway Great Fortune-brand truck struck and killed him. He regained consciousness in a bodiless void, where the Ultimate Demonic Blade System bound itself to him. 1

The system awarded him Indestructible, Emotion Points, and a demonic-blade template draw. His draw selected Ashuramaru, transforming his body into a black katana with green patterns. He was then sent to the Demon Slayer world and placed at Kamado Tanjiro’s waist as the Kamado family’s hereditary sword. 1

Lin Fan initially treated Tanjiro as both a necessary wielder and an efficient source of Emotion Points. He invaded Tanjiro’s mind, used illusions of his dead mother and siblings to provoke grief, and offered power in exchange for an all-consuming devotion to revenge. Tanjiro rejected hatred as his sole purpose, instead choosing to protect others and restore Nezuko’s humanity. Impressed by that resolve, Lin Fan contracted with him as Ashuramaru while threatening to seize his body should his resolve ever fail. 2

Although he repeatedly exploits fear, anger, and grief to fuel his system, Lin Fan becomes Tanjiro’s constant adviser, healer, weapon, and instructor. Their partnership lets Tanjiro grow far faster than through ordinary training, while Lin Fan gains Demon Power and Emotion Points through demon hunts and the reactions of those around them. 6 7 17

Appearance

Lin Fan’s original body is gone. As Ashuramaru, he normally exists as a black katana, but he can manifest a humanoid sword-spirit form that appears as a small, elegant young woman despite Lin Fan being male. 1 2

Personality

Lin Fan is sarcastic, opportunistic, and openly ambitious. He regards fear, pain, hatred, and despair as resources, and he frequently provokes emotional reactions for Emotion Points—even when doing so causes Tanjiro distress. His first contact with Tanjiro is built on psychological manipulation rather than trust. 1 2

He is also cautious and pragmatic. Lin Fan plans around unknown threats, upgrades his sensing before entering Mount Natagumo, and intends to flee if he detects an Upper Rank demon he cannot safely confront. 27

Despite denying concern for Tanjiro, he consistently protects and develops him. He warns him of traps and ambushes, heals fatal injuries, teaches him about Breathing styles and Sun Breathing, and takes control when Tanjiro can no longer fight. Tanjiro recognizes that Lin Fan’s harshness often conceals concern. 4 17 27 32
