Background

Orochimaru assisted Hiruzen Sarutobi and Danzō Shimura in a secret project that transplanted Hashirama Senju’s cells into subjects in pursuit of Wood Release capable of suppressing the Nine-Tails. Yamato was the project’s surviving Wood Release user. 29

He later attempted to learn the Flying Thunder God Technique from Tobirama Senju’s forbidden scroll, but spent years failing to master it. Concluding that an ordinary lifespan was too short to learn every ninjutsu, he began pursuing immortality. 110
