First Appearance Chapter 29

Background

Orochimaru assisted Hiruzen Sarutobi and Danzō Shimura in a secret project that transplanted Hashirama Senju’s cells into subjects in pursuit of Wood Release capable of suppressing the Nine-Tails. Yamato was the project’s surviving Wood Release user. 29

He later attempted to learn the Flying Thunder God Technique from Tobirama Senju’s forbidden scroll, but spent years failing to master it. Concluding that an ordinary lifespan was too short to learn every ninjutsu, he began pursuing immortality. 110

Orochimaru gave Kabuto Yakushi his identity and placed him in Konoha as an agent. Kabuto became his right-hand man, motivated partly by revenge against Danzō. 45 81

Appearance

Orochimaru is pale-skinned and unnervingly serpentine in both movement and manner. His body can distort, shed, liquefy, or assume snake-like forms, making his apparent appearance unreliable. 30 110 121

  • Long tongue and snake-like facial expressions. 33 134
  • Can extend his neck more than ten meters. 110
  • Can transform his lower body into a serpent for speed and evasive movement. 31 216
  • Changes bodies through Living Corpse Reincarnation, taking on the vessel’s appearance until he restores his own face. 121 122
  • Uses Transformation Technique to impersonate others, including Sasuke and Obito. 134 180

Personality

Orochimaru is intensely curious, ambitious, and drawn to rare bloodlines, unusual physiques, and forbidden techniques. During the Chūnin Exams, he regarded Sasuke’s Sharingan, Karin’s Uzumaki heritage, and Haku’s Ice Release as valuable experimental material rather than people. 32 33

His pursuit of knowledge regularly overrides caution, particularly where the Sharingan is concerned. His desire to obtain Sasuke’s body blinds him to Itachi’s disguise and leaves him vulnerable to Tsukuyomi. 121 122

After Naruto uses Kotoamatsukami on him, Orochimaru’s fixation shifts from conventional immortality to Naruto himself, Naruto’s future, and the possibility of achieving “true immortality” through Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. He becomes unusually cooperative, though his fascination with Naruto’s body and experiments remains unsettling. 131 149 176

Abilities & Skills

Serpentine Physiology and Substitution

Orochimaru can alter his body beyond normal human limits to evade attacks and survive otherwise fatal situations.

  • Uses Hidden Shadow Snake Hands and Striking Snake Havoc to release attacking snakes from his sleeves and body. 30
  • Escapes Kotoamatsukami’s line of sight by shedding his outer body and emerging from a new one. 110
  • Dissolves into a white liquid to avoid direct capture. 111
  • Can emerge from the ground or move through dense attacks in serpent form. 149 216
  • His body-changing methods do not fully negate the Dead Demon Consuming Seal’s damage to his hands. 80 111

Summoning Technique

Orochimaru commands giant snakes in combat.

  • Summoned a giant snake to escape Naruto’s explosive-tag trap, though the snake was destroyed in the blast. 30
  • Summoned Manda with Kabuto’s assistance after his hands were sealed. 111
  • Uses Manda as both an offensive force and a hiding place, concealing himself inside its body to escape Naruto’s gaze. 111

Forbidden Techniques and Body Transfer

Orochimaru developed or employed several forbidden techniques in pursuit of immortality and power.

  • Living Corpse Reincarnation — Transfers his consciousness into another person’s body, granting a form of “false immortality.” 121 131
  • Edo Tensei — Summoned the First and Second Hokage during the Konoha Crush, forcing Hiruzen to use the Dead Demon Consuming Seal. 78
  • Five Elements Seal — Added a seal to Naruto’s abdomen to suppress the leaking chakra of the Nine-Tails. 31
  • Heaven’s Curse Mark — Planted a curse mark on Utakata after pursuing and outmaneuvering him. 217
  • Cursed Seal research — Created the seals used by the Sound Four and evaluated Sasuke’s curse-mark evolution as proof of his potential as a vessel. 68 80

Kusanagi Sword

Orochimaru can control the Kusanagi Sword remotely.

  • Used the sword to pierce Hiruzen Sarutobi through the chest while Hiruzen attempted to seal his soul. 78 79
  • The strike prevented Hiruzen from fully sealing Orochimaru, though Hiruzen successfully sealed the souls within Orochimaru’s arms. 80

Stone Statue Soul-Swapping Technique

After three years of research centered on Naruto, Orochimaru developed a new space-time ninjutsu.

  • Carved hundreds of stone statues in Naruto’s likeness while researching and attempting to locate him. 130 131
  • Replaces a target with a stone statue and summons the target to his ritual site across long distances. 131
  • The technique caused Naruto’s recurring nightly sensation during his three years at Mount Myōboku. 131

Medical and Experimental Expertise

Orochimaru remains a highly capable but dangerous researcher and surgeon.

  • Assessed the risks of removing Neji Hyūga’s Caged Bird Seal, then weakened it through a procedure with a stated one-percent survival chance. 132 133
  • Agreed to modify Karin’s body so Naruto could absorb her chakra without repeatedly injuring her by biting. 140 141
  • Performed Naruto’s second Sharingan transplant, leaving Naruto with both of Shisui’s eyes. 176
  • Modified Torune Aburame’s insects into pink swarms with aphrodisiac and hallucinatory effects. 196 216

Equipment / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Remotely controlled blade used against Hiruzen Sarutobi. 78 79
  • Stone statues of Naruto — Components of the Stone Statue Soul-Swapping Technique. 130 131
  • Experimental laboratory and imprisoned test subjects — Maintained as potential vessels and research material. 121
  • Sealing talismans — Used to silence and restrain Shukaku. 149

Relationships

  • Naruto Uzumaki — Initially a target and later an attempted recruit; Naruto ultimately rewrites Orochimaru’s central obsession with Kotoamatsukami and makes him a subordinate. Orochimaru becomes fixated on Naruto’s future and follows his orders. 80 122 131 214
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher and opponent during the Konoha Crush. Hiruzen dies sealing the souls in Orochimaru’s hands, crippling his ability to perform ninjutsu. 78 80
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Former right-hand man whom Orochimaru gave a false identity and recruited after Danzō’s manipulation destroyed Kabuto’s life. Kabuto later opposes Naruto’s altered version of Orochimaru. 45 81 216
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Orochimaru’s preferred future vessel because of the Sharingan and Sasuke’s curse-mark potential. 68 121
  • Itachi Uchiha — A former target whose Sharingan Orochimaru coveted; Itachi defeats and tortures him with Tsukuyomi, then later works alongside him under Naruto. 118 122 215
  • Kimimaro — Devoted follower who considers Orochimaru his master. Kimimaro is shocked to learn that Orochimaru now obeys Naruto. 118 214
  • Danzō Shimura — Former collaborator with mutual distrust. Danzō sought to exploit Orochimaru against Hiruzen, while Orochimaru suspected Danzō’s intelligence network had uncovered his invasion. 29 30 33
  • Yamato — A former subject of the Hashirama-cell project Orochimaru assisted with; later accompanies Naruto during the discovery of Orochimaru’s new ritual. 29 130
  • Utakata — Target of Orochimaru’s pursuit and Heaven’s Curse Mark. 215 217

Story Role / Major Arcs

Chūnin Exams and Konoha Crush

Orochimaru infiltrates Konoha in disguise, seeks Yamato, and cooperates indirectly with Danzō’s scheme against Hiruzen. He targets Sasuke as a vessel, tests Naruto, suppresses the Nine-Tails’ leaking chakra with the Five Elements Seal, and prepares the Konoha Crush. 29 31 33

Disguised as the Fourth Kazekage, he manipulates the Chūnin Exams, evaluates Sasuke’s dual curse-mark activation, and signals the invasion to begin. 68 70

During his battle with Hiruzen, Orochimaru uses Edo Tensei and the Kusanagi Sword. Hiruzen dies but seals the souls in Orochimaru’s arms, leaving Orochimaru unable to properly perform ninjutsu and forcing him to flee with the Sound Four. 78 80

Loss of Allies and Kotoamatsukami

With Kabuto captured and most of the Sound Ninja dead or taken, Orochimaru becomes desperate enough to seek a new vessel among his imprisoned test subjects. His obsession with Sasuke’s Sharingan leads him into Itachi’s Tsukuyomi. 121 122

Naruto uses Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami on the weakened Orochimaru, implanting the belief that “the end of immortality is Naruto Uzumaki.” The altered obsession drives Orochimaru to pursue Naruto rather than immortality. 122

Secret Alliance with Naruto

Orochimaru spends three years researching Naruto and invents the Stone Statue Soul-Swapping Technique to summon him. Naruto confirms that Kotoamatsukami changed Orochimaru’s memories and motivations, then recruits him into a secret alliance focused on Kaguya and true immortality. 130 131

The two stage a fight to deceive Yamato and Neji. Orochimaru subsequently assists Naruto with Neji’s Caged Bird Seal, Karin’s body modification, Sharingan surgery, and other experiments. 131 133 141 176

Naruto’s Operative

Orochimaru acts as part of Naruto’s growing network, impersonating Obito during the staged Akatsuki operation against Rōshi and helping restrain the Four-Tails jinchūriki. 180 181 182

He later accompanies Itachi in the pursuit of Utakata, evades Kimimaro’s Bone-Spike Forest, and successfully plants the Heaven’s Curse Mark on the Six-Tails jinchūriki. 215 216 217

Notable Quotes

“Only by gaining immortality could one learn every ninjutsu.” 110

“Every word Naruto says and everything he does is worth studying.” 149

Trivia

  • Orochimaru’s inability to learn the Flying Thunder God Technique was a major reason he began pursuing immortality. 110
  • He was initially so obsessed with Sasuke’s Sharingan that Naruto could identify him by his mixture of greed, fear, obsession, and excitement upon seeing the eye. 122
  • Orochimaru’s research into Hashirama Cells produced Yamato as its notable surviving Wood Release result. 29 141
  • Kabuto considers the Naruto-controlled Orochimaru a false version of his former master and seeks to restore the “real” Orochimaru. 214 216
